IM aggregator/proxy to improve battery life?
 

I've been reading about how IM, especially having multiple simultaneous accounts, really kills battery life. I have four (if I could get Facebook working it would be five), and it might explain why my battery life is so poor.

I was wondering if there's some kind of IM aggregator software I could run on my Debian server? Maybe something based on telepathy? It would keep open all the different accounts and feed them down to the device in just one connection. Hopefully whatever protocol it uses would be a nice, energy-efficient protocol that avoids polling.

I found ebuddy.com, but it doesn't look like it'll work in Maemo. And anyway, I'd prefer my communications to pass through as few third parties as possible. I'd also like to automatically archive all my conversations to a Subversion repository, which is the kind of hackery I can only do on my own computer.

Is there anything out there? If not, does anyone else think this would be a good idea?

I thought that there were lots of jabber gateways out there that you could give all your passwords to and they would integrate all your IM logins into a single (Jabbber) account on their server.

I had the same thought as you a few days ago & google led me here:

its still integrated so yes wont help your battery performance (if like you said, multiple accounts do drain the battery).

I might be mis-reading your post and not understand your exact requirements but something Nimbuzz/Fring not something you like? Fring is still in early non-polished stages but Nimbuzz is apparently almost ready to be rolled out.
It is an app you install and from my experiences on N97, it works very smoothly and clearly shows you which contact is logged onto from which service.

I've seen that facebook chat page, and I'm following those instructions, and it doesn't work. It claims that the username or password is wrong. Obviously I've tried about a thousand times and I can't have typed it wrong every time, so I gave up. It just doesn't work for me.

Neither Numbuzz nor Fring seem to support the N900 or any other Maemo devices. But then, I don't see anything about what protocol their respective applications use to talk to the server. Can you connect with one of the existing protocols?

If I follow that document I should be able to install a jabber server on my box and add gateways for all the other protocols. Exactly what I wanted. I'll experiment with doing this when I get a chance.

try imo.im and use a wap connection

i believe Nimbuzz is currently updating their product to support n900 on IM's. but i know waiting is not an option so i dont recommend it.

As it happens, Facebook just worked for me for the first time ever. Typical. I am almost 100% sure I entered the same password as always. Of course, the problem with the username/password system is always that if you've got the wrong password stuck in your head, you just go round and round in circles, and getting "password incorrect" messages when you know you're typing it perfectly just adds insults to injury.

I don't understand what "try imo.im and use a wap connection" means. They appear to be a web client, which is extremely not an option.

Running my own Jabber server seems like the way to go.

Install openfire with Kraken (http://kraken.blathersource.org/node/8) and configure on your server (no not the one called Nokia N900 :)) then set up an account, register your other services and configure the N900 with just one jabber account.

Java doesn't work that well on my virtual private server. If there's no other option I might give Kraken a go, but I'll try a C/C++ server first.
