Re: n900 file manager root access
PROBLEM:
non-installable applications, a.o. Midnight Commander (mc 4.6.2-pre1-1maemo5) -I add Maemo-Extras-Devel repo (temporarily...) - OK -I find mc in the Application Manager list - OK -I try to install that - FAIL. AppMan sees it as not-installable. Message (translated:) "Missing application packages: file". I own the N900 for just 1 week and I'm quite a noob at Linux (or root access as such). I may have installed 1 or 2 things too eagerly (tho I tried not to; btw I have not given any X Terminal commands other than pwd, ls and cd. Had apps only installed by Application Manager). I try to get wiser on this Linux site Other missing packages: -gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-extra (for Extra Decoders Support 0.3.4-1) -xsltproc (for KMPlayer 0.10.3.903-1) WHAT DUN (perhaps relevant?) -aMSN - tried to update it to 0.98.3, did NOT go well -tried uninstall aMSN and to reinstall - FAIL, tcl and tk (I think tcl8 and tk8) went missing -reflash with maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2 - OK (phew...) -install aMSN (version 0.98.1-1 again as that had worked) - OK QUESTION: Is it possible to check whether essential files are still there? For instance, using Storage Usage 1.1.0 and checking on some list (which I can nowhere find. Any help appreciated. |
Re: n900 file manager root access
It sounds like you are deliberately trying to make things difficult for yourself. For the time being, you should forget about mc or wanting to see the whole file system. What you should learn first is the normal operation of your N900. You need to install things using the app manager.

Could I continue pressing the link "file 4.12 -tosso" (with the right credentials) to guarantee proper working of file? If so, what would I be altering? If not, what would I be altering? |

Re: n900 file manager root access
I did already have that catalogue present. Will check whether double or sth.
apt-cache show file ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Package: file Priority: standard Section: utils Installed-Size: 100 Maintainer: Michael Piefel <piefel@debian.org> Architecture: armel Version: 4.12-1osso Depends: libmagic1 (= 4.12-1osso), libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libmagic1, zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1) Filename: ./file_4.12-1osso_armel.deb Size: 28652 MD5sum: fa3e48a777ae9d7066bf0b0454b446ca SHA1: 69e98c272416e15e5328347af76fd4707589e26c Description: Determines file type using "magic" numbers File tests each argument in an attempt to classify it. There are three sets of tests, performed in this order: filesystem tests, magic number tests, and language tests. The first test that succeeds causes the file type to be printed. . Starting with version 4, the file command is not much more than a wrapper around the "magic" library. ~ $ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- So the N900 does have a description present at least. Peculiar that it would be missed then. |
Re: n900 file manager root access
I actually found a double "Extras" catalogue. Don't know how that got there, I guess it's possible that I have been ignorant of an incomplete catalogue being loaded and as a result a messed up Application Manager.
-Midnight Commander install - OK. Much thanks, I do not have to give any commands as root as yet! But I want to eventually sync with Thunderbird. Before I do that I want to have a reasonable amount of control, so a file manager is wished for. First I go reading on, ofcourse - thumbs up! - |
