[Bug report] OVI Maps - data transfer when not using network positioning

This is a very big problem when roaming, about 400kB are transferred on each Maps launch even when network positioning is turned off and your region maps are the latest version. This makes Maps unusable when roaming (or at least very expensive). Please vote if you are affected by this:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9594

EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
(Explain in detail what you do (e.g. tap on OK) and what you see (e.g. message
Connection Failed appears))
1. Download and install the latest map for your region
2. In Settings turn off Network positioning
3. Open up Maps application and wait for it to find your position

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
No data is transferred if the installed maps are the latest version and not
using network positioning.

ACTUAL OUTCOME:
There is about 400kB worth of traffic upon launch (8.5kB upload, 391.5kB
download).

REPRODUCIBILITY:
always

EXTRA SOFTWARE INSTALLED:
not applicable

OTHER COMMENTS:
This is a very big problem when using data while roaming. 400kB on each Maps
launch is pretty steep (about 2.40EUR in EU, at 0.06EUR/10kB) and makes using
the Map application impractical and very expensive.

as an quick and dirty patch: put your device to offline-mode when starting maps and see if it helps

Currently this will cause "Exit offline mode?" dialogs to pop up periodically (a variant of bug 5905).

And of course you may want a network connection for finding a location, getting directions from a friend etc so it's not a real solution anyway.

Not to mention automatic email updates (my case...)

I get exactly the same behaviour. Incidentally, this also happens if I set my IM status to show my location; presumably the text of the location is supplied by Ovi Maps, if not, then whatever is supplying location data is causing this problem.

I would vote for it as a bug, but I'm sick of setting up accounts for every part of maemo.org; bugzilla has just asked for yet another account. Too much!

Re: [Bug report] OVI Maps - data transfer when not using network positioning

I did a new test - I thought I'd check to see if the enabled/disabled switch
for net based pos is being ignored - this time I removed the network
positioning supplier (supl.nokia.com) and left the space there blank. Then I
disabled network positioning just in case, and reset the data counter.
Result after opening up Maps: ~9kB upload traffic, ~396kB download traffic. So
apparently the traffic is caused by something else, not network based
positioning.
If I'd hazard a guess, it would be that the Maps application checks for updates
to existing maps (?). Still, the amount of transferred data is huge.

Hay you have done a fabulous job. The same idea come across to my mind that i have to check out by removing the network positioning supplier but i think it will not work at all. Because according to the physic law its not appropriate. Is it works or not .........?

Feel free to add your observations to the bug report.

Did that a long while ago (actually I'm the one that reported this bug :), and the observation was entered in the comments on that same day). It's already there.

But as far as I can see, even with the bug marked as BLOCKER, it's still NEW. I sincerely hope it's being worked on, since it's pretty much making the Maps app useless when roaming (when it would be the most useful).

Re: [Bug report] OVI Maps - data transfer when not using network positioning

This is very bad, especially if nothing is being done about it.

One of my reasons for sticking with Nokia is the Maps application, because of the fact that the data can be preloaded, avoiding roaming charges when abroad. I assumed the same would be possible on the N900 as with any previous N-series device I've used.

But I discover that firstly offline search is not possible, and secondly this. The first means my use of Maps abroad is restricted; the second means it's unusable.

So Nokia have removed one of the main things that made them attractive over other manufacturers. Well done.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue besides the offline mode workaround? I am traveling abroad soon, and I want to avoid any extra bandwidth.
