N900 and the size of it !
Finally joined this community after months of watching an reading. Sorry for my english gramma but here comes a question which I will consult you on.
Seriously thinking of buying an N900 even though there is some uncertainty about the upcoming OS. Will it get Meego or not, though it would be nice to know, right now I don't care much. Just want linux in my pocket.:p One of the problems which I believe will be an issue for me though, could be the size. Do it fit in my pocket and do i need to take an extra belt on to keep my pants up ? ;) So to all you maemo people in here, how do you carry your N900 (belt, pocket, bag, hand etc....) ? And is the size and weight a problem? oestR |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
It easily fits in the pocket, even in the CP-321 case. No extra belts needed :)

Re: N900 and the size of it !
I bought a separate backpack for. Just be careful when it starts vibrating. Seriously? Unless you use very (very very) tight pants, the size wont disturb you...
About MeeGo you can follow the discussion in this forum. If you have been around for long enough you saw the many threads about it. |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
it is huge. I ended up carrying mine with this when walking outside:

Re: N900 and the size of it !
When I first considered buying the N900, the size had me worried.
I can happily confirm what Duffer is saying: the size of the N900 isn't an issue at all. |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
Mine is more than happy in my pocket, and I have it in a flip case that's a bit more bulky than the CP-321 Duffer mentioned - That said, I come from an E90 so by comparison the N900's tiny anyway.
To me, the N900 is much more pocketable than a lot of touchscreens on the market - It's thickness adds bulk, but as it isn't as wide as most it slips into pockets easily (shorter and less wide than an iPhone for example, just thicker). |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
It is quite large compared to a normal phone, but as others say it isn't too big to carry around.
|
Re: N900 and the size of it !
Is that a N900 in your pocket or you just pleased to see me?
Seriously tho, it fits in the pocket just fine unless you wear skin tight pants. |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
It's a chunky phone, but not huge by any means. If you search around, there's a link somewhere to whatever that site is that lets you visually compare different objects to scale - that should help. As far as carrying it, I use a gadget holster from UrbanTool, but a medium-sized belt case would work as well. I rarely carry it in my pockets, but anything that isn't jeans or similarly tight-fitting pants will probably hold it. As far as needing an extra belt to hold up your pants, I think you're fine there... you can just get more holes punched in the one you have. :) (no, but seriously, that won't be an issue unless you carry as many gadgets as I do) (edit: no, I'm not kidding... I have to go get that done)

I also came to the N900 after years with Nokia Communicators such as the E90 and found the N900's size no problem at all.
In fact, some of my fears about moving to a touchscreen device were put to rest by the N900's thickness, which makes it easier to hold without accidentally interacting with the screen elements. |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
Agreed, I find the size of n900 almost perfect. I use mine in conjunction with the CP-132 case (I think that's right, it's the european case), and it has never been a problem.

Seriously it's not really big at all, all the blogs saying it's ZOMGHUGE are blowing things way out of proportion. It's definitely thicker than average, which is probably what sent all the gadget fashionistas into a tizzy. It's perfectly pocketable, even with the jeans these days that seem to be made only to carry credit cards  I came from a Treo 650 and it feels like a big fat cow compared to the N900. This should be helpful: http://thenokiablog.com/2009/08/28/n...ze-comparison/ |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
I like the size of the N900 personally, its not massive to the extent of like the Toshiba TG01 that my mum has (crap phone, it really is, sorry mum!), its thin, wide and long and isn't pocket friendly.
At least with the N900 i can feel it in my pocket and know its there, and if I sit on it that it won't snap in half like an iPhone. http://i.komorkomaniak.pl/2009/12/n9...g01-medium.jpg |

Re: N900 and the size of it !
After owning an 9000i communicator in the past N900 doesnt feel large at all. I was a bit disappointed it was so small when I got it.

Re: N900 and the size of it !
It will get smaller in a future firmware upgrade.
(the size is fine - I just toss it in my pocket.) |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
It's just over a normally-sized phone for me, I still have a hard time to believe they crammed so much stuff in there.
I didn't carry the N810 in my pocket much, and it was alone in there when I did. Now the N900 is rarely alone in my right front pocket. |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
I can say that compared to my E63, it is actually bigger in a better way. It feels really comfortable to talk on, and you can prop it with your shoulder without it wanting to take off, but on the flip side, it is fine in a front or back pocket.

Re: N900 and the size of it !
i have a long palm history in my pocket so im used to big devices.
but in comparison to a "common" cheap and solid mobile phone, is huge and heavy as a brick :D |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
I too was a little sad to see the size, personally I would have been fine with an N810 sized device. If Nokia were serious about step 4 of 5 etc they should have let us geeks, early adopters and beta testers have one last nice big 'Internet Tablet' instead of a smartphone sized device.

Re: N900 and the size of it !
I actually expected it to be bigger.....but I just put it in my handbag phone pocket or my coat pocket. However, in summer i dont think I could walk around with it in my jeans pocket, unless i wear boyfriend jeans every day!!Apart from feelng uncomfortable it would also be pretty obvious prey for all those pickpockets around in Florence....I mean sort of 'Hey! she's got a N900 in her back pocket, let's move!'.After reading this thread i got my boyfriend to check out if he could put the n900 in his pocket, he found it no problem, even in his inner jacket pocket......he also suggested a small messenger bag which all men/young boys seem to carry with them in Italy. Evidently all this hardware is getting pretty heavy so all these males turn to designer bags!! :-) especially when it gets to 40° in the summer months and you're obviously short of clothes never mind pockets to stick a phone in.
So in conclusion it's largish, solid, can double as a netbook, fits in your pocket....and is perrrrfect! |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
It fits my front trouser pocket (but be sure to get screen protection - coins and sand may damage it otherwise). I'll simply pocket the device if I step away from my desk for a few moments, but if I'm traveling then I carry it in a soft case that attaches to my belt.
I do find it marginally uncomfortable to use as a phone - I'm accustomed to a candy bar style phone which fits my small hands better. But for all other purposes its size suits me just fine. |

Re: N900 and the size of it !
When I first unpacked my n900 I literally said "damn its so small".
After all the reviews I read i was really expecting something significantly chunkier. In comparison to my 6110 Navigator it's about a half centimeter longer and wider and actually slightly less thick. I carry it in a clip on leather case, but before that I had it in my front trouser pocket. No problems. Aydan |

It fits any pocket but front shirt pocket is better to avoid (weight!).

Re: N900 and the size of it !
My last phone was a n95 8G. When I ordered my N900 I thought I would have to buy a new pouch for it. But low and behold it even fits in the belt pouch of my n95. It is exactly as thick as the n95, just a bit longer. I have no problem with the weight or the size. I have a friend who has the HTC HD2, now that is a BIG phone.

Re: N900 and the size of it !
There would be much fewer complaints about the size if they simply put a larger battery in it (the E71 which is 10mm thick uses the 1500mAh battery)
.. at least it would have been thick for a reason. Yes the keyboard, but the keys are not good enough to justify the size. I could type on the E71 keyboard all day long |
Re: N900 and the size of it !
Below are 4 posts that higlight what I think are big shortfalls in the n900.
most on the list wouldn't have deterred me from purchasing the phone. But had i know how bad the Calender, Tasks and Notes function was - no to mention the lack of search functions I probably would have waited. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=47126 http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=47134 http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=47130 http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=46479 |
