nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
hi
after upgrading I have access to all the wifi networks, except the free network of college. I refresh the basic properties but nothing happened. someone with a good idea? |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Maybe the network is hidden and you have to manually add the access point to your phone. Or just try to add the new access point from the setting/internet connections part and scan for it that way. I say that because at home I cannot add my n900 with just a button push. I have to enter the password from settings menu for it to function properly.

Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
by the way, I get to connection but can not enter Internet
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
its a free conection. I have NO password.
thx a lot |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
another quick try is maybe you have to register mac address with the computer lab or get an ip address from the school. or maybe you have to enter some proxy settings in the menu. maybe you need a static ip address. it sounds as if you are connected to the network but being blocked by some firewall or some other security measure. I will be back to give more and more. Gotta go somewhere.

Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
worked three weeks ago. At school, opened the connection to not configure the devices. The school uses the system called barracuda

other idea? thx

Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Did you use the Nokia Software Updater? Or did you flash the phone yourself? As I understand it you at one point had access. After upgrading you no longer have access. If you flashed the phone from command line make sure you use the right firmware. If you only used the NSU then you might have to flash the eMMC and the firmware to the phone. You need the Vanilla eMMC package and the latest firmware. Maybe you installed a package from extra-devels you weren't supposed to? I had issues with my phone after updating with the NSU but after I flashed it from the command line interface the phone worked extremely better.

Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
yes, I Flash it myself using NSU. where is the Vanilla eMMC package? can you help me? a link, please.
in other hand, I dont know if I got something from extra_devel. is it relevant? some program could get down my internet connection? |

bro, free open connection at colledge is not free to accessing the net, you'll need proxy setting to allowed you to by passing the firewall then it will prompt you with the user name and password. if you don't configured the proxy setting to the connection specification then there is no way to browse out of their protected zone. i hope i help making it clear for you. fyi, i worked as an IT support at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Hello
I think that I could not explain. Since I bought my N900, I could connect to all wifi connections free. My university provides free Internet via wifi (no user, no password, no IP configuration). I installed the last update two or three weeks ago. when I did, I had no problems. The strange thing is that since then, the phone said that I could connect and I can see the IP through WifiInfo. but when I open any page in the Browser can not display anything. "unable to connect, blah blah blah" In all other places it works, even my house. (WLAN and security) and that's what I go crazy. on the other hand, I know that I subscribe to extra-devel but I do not know if some programs may be blocking something. any ideas??? |

why just in there?
and, seriously, need extra Flash eMMC?? I'm noob and it sounds dificult and dangerous |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Hello, I also registered my mac and did not work.
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Someone has an idea?? no one has had this problem.
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
I came across a similar problem with my wifi at work.
Try editing the connection then manually setting everything on the 'IP Addresses' tab from the 'Advanced' menu. it worked for me. I can concur, though, that updating to the latest firmware changed something with how wifi on this phone behaves. |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
delete problematic wifi connection (settings-internet connections-connections)
shut down phone restart and try to connect |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Hello Slender
I already tried that and it did not work. Thank you very much |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
ok. have you tried to delete it and make new connection from settings-internet connections.

Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
@OP If you are having problems with one specific network it would make sense to chat to the support staff that look after it. They should be able to see if your device is being quarrantined on the network due to policy or another reason.
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Hello
I already did and they tell me that there are no restrictions for any type of device. Thx |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Hello
The connection is no WEP or WPA2. The idea is that you enter the University and your device is connected directly. If you turned on the automatic search network, you will have internet almost without realizing it. The problem is that N900 is connected and it seems that also manages to get an IP, but can not open any page in the browser. This happened after the last update. ! Thank you all for your support. |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
indeed, although I have an IP, the measured speed can not recognize transfer rate
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
If you have a stable wifi connection with IP address showing on your N900 there are only a couple of things that come to mind that could be going wrong...
The WEP/WPA key your entering has been entered incorrectly; The router requires your MAC address listed; Internet access is behind a proxy and you will need to configure the address (and username/password if required); You've told your N900 to use an alternative DNS server (the server that translates names to IP addresses) under advanced settings. Put it back to Auto-Retrieve or checkout opendns.com for alternative settings; There is not internet connection available from the router you've connected to (its a LAN wifi router only for staff/ internal networks). |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Friend
good ideas, but do not use any type of key and the MAC was listed three months ago. and the problem occurred two weeks ago. service which I mean not offer any type of network to share data. ie only free internet. what type of DSN-alternative you mean? can you explain a little more? |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
indeed, I can not use Skype or anything that tries to use the internet. but more interesting is that according WIfiInfo if I have high signal IP (60%) and recognize my MAC and AP
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
settings > internet connections > connections > (select the wifi network on left) Edit > Next > Next > Advanced > IP addresses > check 'Auto-retrieve DNS' is enabled or put in alternative details from opendns.com.
Otherwise, have a chat with a network admin - there might actually be an issue with the wifi connection your trying to use. |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
'Auto-retrieve DNS' is enabled. I have never used OpenDNS. Just place the address space.
208.67.220.220 primary or secondary DNS? |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Can you ping outside IPs, try
ping 4.2.2.1 you need to have installed the root package and be the root user, also could you post the output of the command "iwconfig" for which you will need to install the hp wireless tools package |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
router problem, had the same issue.
try with other wireless unix and see if they go through. if not then you might be able to convince your network staff to reset and reconfigure their router...good luck |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Oh Buddy, this is very very very difficult. HAHAHA
I would need another kind of solution. thanks anyway |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Take the N900 to your network admins at college and ask them to have a look at it. Hopefully one of them will know Unix and will be keen to help. The fact it is a really cool device should make them interested in helping!
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
for that reason, I would never see my N900 again. thanks and I'll ask one.
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
I have tried many things. I need to clear my eMMC (Flashing eMMC)?. That may help?? I need suggestions. thank all
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Open X-terminal and type the following commands with root privileges.
ping 8.8.8.8 - This command tries to ping IP address 8.8.8.8 (google dns). If packets go through, your connection seems to work. ping google.com - Tries to ping the domain google.com. If the earlier worked and this does not, it's a DNS issue. |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
Can't you find an Eeepc running linux and just try once?
|
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
ping does nothing with 8.8.8.8, nor ping google.com
I know that I'm connected to IP is 172.17.13.21 and I CAN do PING to this IP I have no more ideas. Someone with a little help. thanks |
Re: nice problem. :-( free wifi is dead
