Things you can do to improve Sygic Mobile Maps on the N900

This guide is intended for new users to the N900, Linux (Maemo) and Sygic. It is intended to get all the tweaks and hacks in the one place so you do not have to navigate through the Sygic thread, excuse the pun ;)

I did not discover these tips and tricks myself but merely complied them when I was installing Sygic on my N900 and put them in the one document, adding noob step by step instructions. So thanks must go to the community for the information and the many posters on the "Sygic announces ...." thread

It is a step by step guide from a new Linux user for other new users and those not yet comfortable with Linux and Xterminal commands, I make no apologies for the simplistic approach.

As always, beware when following these instructions and I would advise doing a back up of you device before installing any new software and making such changes.

I use “” quotation marks to signify anything on the N900 screen and in courier font too for any command that you should make. Just enter the information within the “” marks and not the “” themselves.

To install Mobile Maps once you have finished the PC setup and all the files are on you N900

I have added this as it threw me for a couple of minutes when I had finished the PC install and could not see Sygic on my N900 :confused:

Use file manager and select N900
Scroll all the way to near the bottom, ignoring all the folder, until you come to “SetupMobileMaps”
Select that file and you will encounter the classic install screen with the “I understand and Agree” box
Proceed as per normal installation.

Things to do after installing Sygic

To Open more menu items (such a traffic and portrait mode):-

Use File manager and go to:-

“N900/Drive/Maemo”

Then hold you stylus on "menu.ini" file
When the options box appear choose “rename” and rename to the name of your choice and then press the "Save" box.

To remove the annoying opening warning message:-

Use File manager and go to:-

“N900/Drive/Maemo”

Select “settings.ini” and when prompted to select application scroll down to the "Notes" application and select it.

You should now have the setting file open in a notes window.

There are two lines starting:-

“showSafetyMsg=”

The first one is already set as false so scroll down to the second instance and change “true” to “false”

Then press the “Notes – settings.ini” at the top of the screen and select “save”

To make the application always opens in full screen

This is where you will need to use Xterminal

Open Xterminal from the “more” page in the application menu
Type the following

“vi /usr/share/applications/hildon/sygic.desktop(ensure there is a space after typing “vi”)

use the keyboard cursor buttons and move to the line

“Exec=/opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive -cwd=/home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo”

Now move the cursor to the very end of the line and then press “a” on your N900 keyboard.
This puts you into edit mode and typing will appear after the cursor.
Add the following to the end of the line:-

“ -rfull” (ensuring the is a space before the hyphen)

Now press the “ESC” key at the bottom of the touch screen (this takes you out of edit mode)
Don’t worry where the cursor is.

Now type

“:w”

Then press the enter or return key

You can now close Xterminal and start Sygic in full screen.

I hope this helps and means you do not have to trawl through the 100 plus pages in the Sygic thread.

I don't know why, but I tried this via ssh, and now I can't see Sygic at all... Is there any kind soul who could upload there sygic.desktop (I would love if it was a full screen-working version)?

Re: Things you can do to improve Sygic Mobile Maps on the N900

i recently bought sygic for n900 and i'm loving it so far, but what i cannot seem to find an answer for is the greyed out traffic button (after modding it appears but is grayed). Does mm9 for n900 support real time traffic info and if so how does it work or how do i enable it or is this feature only available in the mm10 version? If so are n900 users also getting the free update to mm10 any time soon?

thnx

How do I make Sygic not open in full screen when it is launched? It used to but ever since I installed an update for it ages ago it now opens in full screen mode every time.

oes anyone have a mod for improving the volume of the voice guidance? even after editing the .ini sound variable he seems to whisper directions at me from my windscreen!

also does anyone know where the .wav files are stored? was going to look into some custom voices if i can be bothered anytime soon.

Yes it does.
You can also set a distance as to how far away it will detect a speed camera

it doesn't actually "detect" the radar traps per se... it has a list of all fixed location cameras in countries where that information is available. so as long as its not a mobile radar trap or very new camera it will inform you before you get there.

This is going to be a feature for MM10!

Dont worry, this is in the making and should be available soon :)

Theres a beta demonstration on youtube and apprently it just needs a few bugs ironed out so it will be out soon, just gotta be patient :)

the traffic camera locations are included now, i dont know what he's expecting in 10, (welll live traffic reports are due but thats completely different) and as for detecting mobile radar traps yes more hardware would be required. and as said hardware merely needs to beep to inform you of an upcoming camera connecting it to your n900 would be rather pointless.

Hell yeah.I found them.http://poiplaza.com/
Working great in n900 Sygic.
Don`have to wait MM10
There is huge poi collection from different countries.
Just download wanted POI fail and read instructions.
So f*king simple:D

Does anybody know how enable updated version upside menubar.In older version there was clock and charging information visible.
Also multitasking is gone but you can still do it pushing camera button once.

Here what it should look like:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Mobile Maps 9
Icon=sygic
Exec=/opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive -cwd=/home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo -rfull
Type=Application

You must of opening Sygic at the same time as your media player? LOL I serious have no idea how to fix your problem. Mine didn't do this at all. Unlucky I must say

Re: Things you can do to improve Sygic Mobile Maps on the N900

no it's somehow added the sound files to my list of media, so "shuffle all songs" = "music + random directions"

To make Sygic waves file hidden from Media Player:

Yes I found your problem :)
If you don't want the sound to be added into your media player then you'll have to change the path of

/home/user/MyDocs/Res

to

/home/user/MyDocs/Private/Res

Create a folder called Private in MyDocs and move Res into it.

after Moved Res folder to Private Folder.
Edit:

MyDocs/Drive/Maemo/setting.ini

.
.
[Settings]
showSafetyMsg=false
;DPI=96
DPI=220
;IconSize=3
processing=fribidi
PositionFiltering=true
colorMode=RGB565
showSafetyMsg=true
ResourcePath=/../../Private/Res

Done now there won't be any .wav file from sygic in your media player anymore. :)

I changed mine to test it out and will see if it actually work lol. No idea but hopefully.

Re: Things you can do to improve Sygic Mobile Maps on the N900

cool, okay. i had to uninstall it as part of troubleshooting some other random problem i had, but i'll give this a try asap. thanks :)

maxximuscool 2010-06-15 04:56

Re: Things you can do to improve Sygic Mobile Maps on the N900

Yes move it to MyDocs/Private/Res works :)
This will hide all the annoyance .wav files from showing up in your Media Player. But you'll have to change the path in the setting.ini as above!

Good luck.

In case anyone needs to know, just put the dowloaded POI file into the Maps/wcl directory, and it works fine.

Could you clarify this a little?

I have a ton of states and countries in Mpas.

Do you make a wcl sub-dir in every country, or does one sub-dir do everything, all states, countries, etc.

I culdn't get this to work the first time I tried it.

just put it into the folder MAPS/ WCL

The folder doesn't tigh to any country map. There is a folder called WCL at the bottom of the directory.

if you use .UPi Sygic then put it into Map/SelectedMap
and .Bmp into Res/icons

Re: Things you can do to improve Sygic Mobile Maps on the N900

get some custom voices for the different cameras from gpsunderground ( for example instead of a 'beep' you can get a 'gatso 30' voice and link that with a '30' icon and even choose POI option on Sygic and activate 'play sound when near'.....so you see your custom made '30' icon, hear 'gatso 30' (instead of guessing the speed from the beep) and choose the distance you want to hear it!.....best customization ever!
