Nokia "bricked"
Hi, I have some Nokia 770 , and I have installed Xterm on it.So, after a time, suddendly my network connection of the device was down, so I rebootet it.Than my screen becomes wired...it have from the top to the bottom strange lines on the display, but it s loading normally. But in fact, I cant see now, what I am tipping in on my device.(but sounds comes)
So I read , that this is than called "bricked", and I also read, that nokia could repair that thing with the screen, by using some special port. where I buyed my device, they'ed told me ,I am out of guarantie, and now I want that to do by myself the reperature. So, does anyone Know, where I find the instructions, to "unbrick" the screen of my device? Thanks, Silent |
Re: Nokia "bricked"
Sounds like a white screen of death (WSOD) - I don't think this can be repaired by the user, it has to be fixed by a Nokia repair center. :( The WSOD is a design fault, so you may want to pursue that angle and see if Nokia will repair it free of charge.
Have you had this 770 long? You say it's out of warranty but the WSOD usually appears fairly early (and should now be fixed on new 770s) - have you not used it much or did you buy it second hand? See image capture of a "WSOD" in this post for comparison with your device. |
Re: Nokia "bricked"
from the description, yea, it probably be the infamous WSOD. Anyway, the picture look more like censored than WSOD.

That's not a white screen of death. A white screen is solid white. you get some funky blue bars when it first boots, and then pure white after that. What that picture is, is of a display problem. It could be related to the WSOD but it's not a WSOD (I had mine WSOD). |

Re: Nokia "bricked"
Thanks for the repleys :)
Hm , yes I got this one at this time for around two weeks , but the problem was, I removed my ...uhm..they said "Guarantey thing"(I dont know the word in english :( ) , I mean that thing where the MAC and the BT adress is on, because I wanted to repair it by myself, my dad had some pda too, he got a similar display problem, than he had removed the debris between the screen and the coat of the device, and it was working again, so I thought mine got the same Problem, and I tried this with no success :( So it s clearly than my own fault that I have now no more guarantee on it. A few colors I still see, when I switch it on, If you look vertical on it, you can read a little bit the Nokia at the Boot up, and later on , you can see a little bit colors on the display..So I think now, the best Is I send it to a repair center from nokia.. thank you all for the tipps ;) |
Re: Nokia "bricked"
Well. if you already void the warranty, maybe you could find out the pin-out for the serial port, you can see that next to the battery. And you might be able to do cold flash instead. I don't have any experience on this, but most people who have the WSOD problems are usually related to the flash. I suggest you do some research about it in the forum or in maemo site. You can also try flashing it w/ difference kernel couple of time b4 sending it back, It's a lot cheaper than paying for Nokia to fix it. Which at this point there is no other alternative anyway.

Re: Nokia "bricked"
Thanks freeman :)
Yes, I had flashed my device after that WSOD, so I thought this Problem would no longer be there than , but it was still there than..so this cold flash sounds interresting, I think I'll informing me in the wiki of maemo.About the other thing, today I was at the Repair center in Stuttgart, from Nokia, I told them my Problem, but than he tould me he never heard about the wihte screen of dead  So he said , he didnt know a solution, and how much the repair costs , he either didnt know :( The best way he told me, is when I'll send the device directly to an other repaier center, but I think that would be 1.very expensive and 2.I dont want to wait a whole month till I get that thing back... But I think maybe this cold flash could work :) |
Re: Nokia "bricked"
Unlikely, as I believe a hardware integrated circuit has failed leading to the WSOD. It's possibly due to a race condition when initialising the LCD panel which results in a driver circuit failing, or something like that.
Your best option is to send it to Nokia - even if it takes a month. You never know, they may offer you a refund which you can put toward a N800! ;) |

Well, you could also try to contact Nokia via e-mail/phone and ask for the price. They might know, even if your local Nokia don't |

It's a design defect - push Nokia hard for a free (or at least reduced price) replacement - your 770 can't be that long out of warranty unless it is one of those produced in the first 3 months of production. :) |
Re: Nokia "bricked"
Okay thanks...I am thinking now, that I should phone Nokia , and ask them , the costs to repair my Nokia 770..that would be the best than..ah yes, btw, the Nokia Reapair center told me, next week on monday, comes a Guy back from holiday, and he will know a solution for my problem(the staff said that, they told me , he is an absolute freak :D )
