What are you missing from previous phones ?
Hello,
I'm very please to have my N900, it works great as an internet tablet and quite good as a phone. I had previously owned two HTC Windows Mobile phones that I flashed very often thanks to the guys from xda-developers. What miss me the most from these phones is: - The vibration when the communication is done with the person you call. This avoid to have the phone close to your head while it connect to the network. - A widget with the hour in a bigger format than the top status bar. - The swipe to answer or not button to avoid the phone to automatically answer a call while getting out of the pocket. - A portrait screen saver with the hour in white/black without the background light set on. In order to have the current hour visible while the phone is in front of me on my desk. This screen saver should be visible for a couple of minutes and then visible when pressing a key. - When reading a received e-mail, it's not possible to delete it, you have to go back to the list of e-mail to do it. - More than 2 profiles (General and Silent). - A profile manager that switch to a silent mode when in meeting. - An icon in the status bar that show that I'm currently in roaming. Most of the time this icon is a triangle. And something that does not exist for the moment and I'm really missing, is a shortcut/widget on which I can click to force the phone to check its default operator. I cross the border each day, when I'm in the building the phone switch to roaming, but when I'm outside it does not switch to my operator because the local operators' signals are stronger. On my Windows Mobile phone I had to click 3 times on search Network for the phone to look for my operators and then it automatically switch to it. But I have found nothing similar on the N900. I cannot use manual network because I need to have the phone available in the building. I just need to be able to switch back to my operator when available outside of the building. Except that, I found this phone really good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As requested by Twaelti, I have try to create a Wiki for this requests but finally found this two : One for existing applications: Applications you wish were ported from other platforms. And one for other requests: Community wish-list Have a look and update if needed. By the way, thanks for your interest. |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
I used to miss ovi maps 3 with voice guidance, but now Sygic Mobile maps is available this item is covered very well.
I am very satisfied with the N900, the one thing for everyday use I am missing is the possibility to sync more then 1 agenda. I have several agenda's in google agenda. Synchronising is possible through nuevasync, but the agenda's are combined to 1 agenda on N900. |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
Missing nothing, just the lack of knowledge about true linux based systems here ;).
If anything, i'm failing alot with tethering, need to learn a bit more about that :). |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?

Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
a quick way to note down numbers while holding a conversation...
if i am on a call and the person im speaking with gives me a phone number, i used to be able to type it into the dial pad and the number would still be there after i hung up the phone. this is not the case with the n900. anyone figure out how to do this without going into the notepad then copy/pasting the number back into the dialer? |

Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
Separate battery door, as in N95. I am getting Mugen 2400 mAh battery, but lens cover will go at the same time, as the Mugen battery door does not have it. I guess it will be the same with any 3rd party max-battery, they do not make lens covers to their custom back covers.
Also, in original N95, microSD was easily accessible without removing the back cover. I tried N97 for awhile in foreign city, and digital compass is very usefull with Nokia/Ovi Maps. I wonder why they leaved so cheap little part out of N900. N810 had sometimes very usefull OTG-host mode in the USB-port. It is not absolutely clear yet, hackers are working on it, but seems like there is some odd design choices, because the chipset would support OTG, but the circuit board and design probably not. I would not mind to have DVB-H in N900 also, as in N96. One thing in software-wise what I miss the most, is Java ME support. Lots of JME applications which I used in N95 are now missing. JME is the most multiplatform compatible software platform still, so it amazes abit why Nokia chose to leave it out....and also why QT-Jambi development was canceled. |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
- Voice tags
- Contacts synchronisation via Gmail or Ovi - SMS writing via numeric keypad - Java applications support - WAP sites access |

Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
coming from e71 then e72
portrait one handed sms/im ovi maps 3 with turn by turn webdav client per contact ringtone it says a lot for the n900 that it is good enough otherwise for me to forgo these features for now. I still put my sim in my e72 if I am going to be on the road for a few days since it has nav and is WAY better for in car use. I still take the n900 and just use it on wifi when needed. On shorter trips, the n900 is really taking the place of my laptop now. |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
From my Treo 650:
- System-wide search - and the N900 has no calendar search at all. This is the top issue for me. - A few PIM issues such as the lack of task description and alarm setting granularity. - Proper IR port. It was handy for copying infrared remotes, although I hardly use that anymore. - Slick UI. On the Treo you could do everything through the keyboard OR the touchscreen (with Graffiti Anywhere you could write with gestures). On the N900 just one or the other won't do the job. The Treo's interface felt like it was highly optimized for everyday use, everything just felt natural. But to be fair the N900 is more of a mobile computer than a PDA like the Treo was. - Battery life. The N900 will barely make it from morning to night in a best case scenario, and if you use it like a laptop it runs down the battery like a laptop. Overall the Treo felt like a better PDA/smartphone, but I still prefer the N900. Its better browsing, multimedia and computing capabilities more than make up for its shortcomings as a PDA/smartphone. |

Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
Nimbuzz and Document Editors.
Although these are third party apps, still miss 'em, and some of 'em are not yet available on n900. |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?

Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
So what we need here is a new rear casing with ability to take larger battery, and a built-in Xenon flash which takes the LED flash as input for a signal to fire.
Hmmmm.... |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
The biggest missing things for me are
- no search for emails and calendar This is major issue in business use - no easy way to copy text from email content - many settings like default folder while browsing images cannot be saved Things I'd like to see - calendar sync with Thunderbird - birthday could dispaly age |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
1. Sim Toolkit Services.
2. USSD 3. Office editor 4. Garmin Mobile XT 5. Sygic v. 7.60 (because this one uses full Romania map. the newest 7.71 can't see those maps. I don't understand why!) 6. Some attractive games ( Maybe NGage ones) 7. Some usefull applications (Total Recall...) If they will be implemented then N900 will be the p.efect phone! |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
I miss Ovi Maps and Nokia Sports tracker the most on my n900, and nothing else - I barely made video calls or sent or recd. MMSs !
N900 is the best device i've owned ..... what I lack is linux knowledge - this is my first linux based device...I have played around wid ubuntu quite many times but never deeply .....Looking forward to learn some good linux stuff :) |

Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
Let's see:
1) I'd be happy with Ovi maps being able to look for addresses offline. 2) iSilo (or any PDB iSilo files reader) 3) Voice Dialing 4) Built-in editable profiles (silent, meeting, etc.) 5) Contact groups and different ring tones per contact/group |

For the documents editor, it is true. nothing is better than OpenOffice in Easy Debian, but a native app would be nice. I have been using Gnumeric, and I find it very good. As for Abiword, it is very slow, and doesn't work for all docs, but it is also useful. For powerpoint, I have koffice, but it doesn't work for nothing! |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
I miss MMS. I miss video calls. I miss voice control. I miss text two speech. I miss navigation. I miss all those symbian apps. I miss ringtones per contact. I miss contact groups. I miss the ability to (literally) blindly control the device via haptic feedback using a d-pad and a few hardware buttons. I miss....
.. oh, wait a minute. I don't miss any of the above. I still use my "old" phone as my main device. The N900 is the couch surfing thing or the laptop replacement when I know I'll need it in advance. |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
from my old phone, i miss all my old friends numbers. thats because they stole my old phone so i wasnt able to recover them.
but not that much: true friends will call me one day or another. im here waiting. |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
I miss MCleaner for Symbian.
Gravity too. However Tweego is looking superb! |
Re: What are you missing from previous phones ?
Two previous people have posted this, but it is by far the biggest feature I miss so I'm repeating it as my vote:
Contact Groups with individualized ring tone support for different groups/contacts. |
