The price is sensational. Wonder how much it will be with contract. Cheapest N900 I saw was below €250,- ...

Aren't Tegra chips based on arm11? Could this be tegra? It explains the 720p.

There will also be a slide-out keyboard version of the N8. Not sure about its thickness though.

Don't know about Tegra, but the GPU has to beefy. (AFAIK) ARM 11 CPU's can't handle encoding HD video.

Re: Here's the Nokia N8-00 ?

Could somebody who really knows about these things explain what chipset Nokia is using? What differences it might have to for example OMAP3430. This ARM11 based at least seems to be very good at saving battery looking at the figures given by Nokia.

Nokia and Qualcomm had chipset project for Symbian phones where we would see results in mid 2010. First from Nokia to support ATT and T-mobile 3G bands make me think that Qualcomm is indeed behind this.

Yes I'm interested :D

This phone is amazing :D I wish my N900 had HDMI and xenon flash and face recognition and turn by turn navigation....oh well :(

The difference is that it isn't powerful enough to run Maemo, Symbian is going to be fine, and Engadget readers are going to have a mental breakdown when they hear about it.

Personally, I'm happy they're trying to push the battery life. I would gladly take this phone over any faster one.

It's fortunately more attractive than I thought it would be, although the theme still needs a lot of work. I hope they customize the colors to each case, and increase transparency for widget backgrounds.

If they lose some of the seams for the next model, it'll be downright beautiful.

Re: Here's the Nokia N8-00 ?

Well I think it has Tegra 600 if you look at the spec sheet you get the idea:

Tegra 600

* Processor ARM11 MPCore @ 700Mhz, 16/32-bit LP-DDR, NAND Flash support
* Audo/ Video Processing 720p H.264 and VC-1/WMV9 decode, 720p H.264 encode, Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA and MP3, JPEG encode and decode acceleration
* Imaging Up to 12 megapixel camera sensor support, Integrated ISP, Advanced imaging features
* True dual-display support
Maximum display resolutions supports:
- 720p (1280×720) HDMI 1.3
- SXGA (1280×1024) LCD
- SXGA (1280×1024) CRT
- NTSC/PAL TV output

Here is Youtube main page for the N8 , the only thing holding me back from fully committing to this beauty is Symbian^3...but surely with these specs this is aimed at giving the HTC & Droids a run for it's money.

It basicly has the same processor core as N97/5800Xpm/ Other S60 5th edition phones, but it's much faster version of ARM11 than in those 5th edition phones (300-400 vs. 680 Mhz).

In addition it seems to have really good GPU. Those 5th edition phones didn't have dedicated graphics processor at all.

Interesting specs and price. Not sure if it should called 'cheap high-end' or 'expensive mid-range'.

Re: Here's the Nokia N8-00 ?

ARM11 is the cpu found in the original iPhone and iPhone 3G... pretty old stuff (circa 2006-2007?).

3D UI, games and video playbacks look smooth, but the 2D screen elements (and scrolling) look visibly choppy.

Endri 2010-04-27 14:23

Re: Here's the Nokia N8-00 ?

Those are my personal opionions:

Pro:
HDMI + 720p
Xvid/Dvix support
Nice camera but let's see how it works
Battery life (But I do not belive 4 days of discrete uses, maybe standby)

Con:
Screen too small, 4 inch would have been far better with this camera and media attitude
CPU slow - But we need to put it on the test before giving a real opinion
No hardware keyboard... that is a pity... I love n900's...
It is thick compared to Nexus and Desire
and then the worst of all:
SYMBIAN. I saw the videos... it looks like a 5 years old OS already...

Anyway I am not buying it, I love my n900 for multimedia and I like light and snappy Nexus as my phone... I will upgrade it only for bettere CPU performances and bigger screen... and off course a major OS, which might include meego but defenitly not include Symbian... of any edition...

Those only ran at 400 MHz and probably also had a weaker GPU.

Lets hope that's why they decided to delay launch a bit. The graphics could probably use more optimization.

Re: Here's the Nokia N8-00 ?

I know that Nokia have been using different ARM11 configurations for long time now, but spec wise this there with OMAP3430(dedicated GPU, 256RAM and 680mhz). The thing is where in reality will the ARM11 then fall flat to OMAP3 or will it?

Yeah, I wasn't raggin on it; just pointing out it's still based on previous gen... which would definitely contribute to cost efficiency, and if I remember correctly, ARM11 based devices don't drain the battery as fast as Cortex A8 ones.

..and the GPU definitely seems to be a current one. HDMI, 720p (encode and decode) and Open GL ES2.0 capable. The 2D stutters were curious.

Zune HD (almos same cpu+gpu) gives you a good example of what arm11 with a good gpu can do.

Those are REALLY impressive picture quality... I hope the photo management/sharing apps do the device justice.

iPod Touch versions with ARM11 are also very snappy. Very smooth scrolling and web surfing. So it is a question of whether Nokia can make the most out of the hardware or not.

We pay 5% tax on any support able to record and store files, photo media etc etc... It's a pre taxation that assume that you're gonna infringe copyright!
Orrible but P2P it's free and will stay this way for this tax... so...

We also have this tax in Finland, now that I think more closely about it...I'm not sure if it is called tax though, I think it is a "fee" instead of tax...oh well, end result is the same.

It's the beginning of Nokia's Qt strategy paying off for everyone. It's the beginning of Qt cross-platform support getting into actual devices. Qt 4.6 is coming to the N900 any time now. A new Qt SDK for developers has also just been released. Qt will change everything regarding writing apps for Maemo/MeeGo, Symbian - whatever.

This is just getting started...

Does this then give you a "legal" right to do it anyway?

The discrimination point is money. If you download 100 gb of music or movies to listen or watch yourself nobody can sue you. If you download 1 mp3 and you sell it OR share one to one you commit a fraud and so you can be prosecuted. (share one to one mean that you rob the music industry the possibility to sell to that person the music... I know sound silly)
