I wonder if Symbian supports ext3. The N8 has USB on the go and is capable of 720p playback over HDMI, but any movies would be too large for FAT32.

Although without 1080p support, it's only 90% there to being a portable movie player.

Con:
Screen too small, 4 inch would have been far better with this camera and media attitude
CPU slow - But we need to put it on the test before giving a real opinion
No hardware keyboard... that is a pity... I love n900's...
It is thick compared to Nexus and Desire
and then the worst of all:
SYMBIAN. I saw the videos... it looks like a 5 years old OS already...

Anyway I am not buying it, I love my n900 for multimedia and I like light and snappy Nexus as my phone... I will upgrade it only for bettere CPU performances and bigger screen... and off course a major OS, which might include meego but defenitly not include Symbian... of any edition...

I don't see any notification that it has native xvid/divx playback...

You might be right. But I am quite sure it Will... n900 like.

There is a very good post on slashgear about Nokia...

You could try formatting a micro SD card and putting it on a phone... if I have some time this afternoon I'll test that in my E71.

Dont hate on Engadget. One of the best sites out there. I check that more than I do this forum. Also gizmodo, arstechnica, kotaku, cnn, yahoo finance and gamespot/gamepro amongst many other. You drank a tall glass of Haterade this morning huh?

I would say they drink said tall glass of Haterade before writing anything Nokia-related. Action and reaction.

I dont think they do. They are just like us excited about new stuff. When it arrives they give it a look over just like I would personally. Most of their reviews are spot on in my opinion-as far as stuff I would like is concerned- and they have disappointments also when the hardware doesnt match the hype. I've met one of thier guys and he(Chris Ziegler) was just as geeked about cell phones like me. He was walking around with the Cliq before anybody else (review unit) and he I were discussing the possibility of Tmobile bringing the N900 into the fold. Evetybody has their views on things and I think that maybe people hate a little too much-(FANBOY Statement) maybe because they are so huge and break so many stories people get jealous cause thier little site doesnt garner any attention. That's all Im saying.

Engadget are everything what's wrong with net they are so biased against anything not US they see fit to write what they want without caring about facts and they form part of the Steve Jobs brigade. now lets get back on topic

First, I really have no time to go around looking for all the subtle (and not too subtle) jabs they have thrown at Nokia, but they have been there, and very clearly in the open.

Second, everyone can have their views, but there is this little important thing called criteria and objectivity. Which many writers of Engadget (and other blogs), clearly don't have, period. One of them said that Eldar's review was "thorough"! Instead of trying to understand why a company (let's say Nokia in this case) does this or that, explain it, and let readers take their own choices, they go this way: Pretty UI + Shiny = Amazing review! A gadget being shiny doesn't guarantee success (Palm Pre?). Many other factors do.

In a more general sense, it is something that seems to have taken over many tech blogs, form over function and lack of analysis. Which is really sad for someone looking for informed opinions.

Edit: I bet... (and I actually had this idea, but didn't have time to do it...) that if someone were to make a fake leak of the new iPhone OS 4 features, but instead put Symbian^3 features on it, all blogs would explode in orgasm. Something like the Mojave test that Microsoft did.

This is the N8x, AKA, the top camera phone. A keyboard would probably come with the N9x (if they release a Symbian^3 edition), or the E7x (of which there was already a picture leaked).

Depending on the time frame, there is a chance there won't be a Symbian^3 N9x; either they could wait for Symbian^4, or reserve the N9x for MeeGo.

Pure speculation btw.

Hahaha! Saying that this thing looks like sidekick lx is like saying that iPhone 4G looks like Motorola cliq xt :)

I think that was a bit over the top.

Strategyanalytics, mobilemarket analysts, wrote about N8 after talking with Jo Harlow (she's in charge of Nokia's Symbian hardware). They also say that the GPU is from Broadcom. So it's propably one of Broadcom's VideoCore GPUs.

That would mean that, aside the 3D GPU requirement, Symbian^3 core shouldn't be much more different than ^2 or S60v5 (^1). That would be interesting from a porting app sense. Also, in a sense is a testimony that Symbian's core really doesn't need much improvements, in terms of features and resource-use.

the phone is actually starting to grow on me.

just wish they had gone with an arm cortex a8, but from what i'm ready the arm 11 with the gpu is supposed to be really nice.

just hope that nokia ships all there phones with the world 3g bands. that would be awesome. not having to worry if the your new phone supports your 3g is def a plus.

you put a " :( ", which shows disappointment/sadness. there's no stable meego build out yet so there'll probably be no announcements of a meego device. why are you getting sad over a wip?

Well, here is another review... http://tweakers.net/reviews/1645/han...-nokia-n8.html

The Google translation is a bit ****ed up though.

For those who root a multimedia Symbian device from Nokia (their flagship) with capacitive touchscreen with similar specss N900 this is a device to consider as upgrade path from N97 (or N95).

If you prefer Maemo you're better off with N900 or its succesors.

Media seems like the huge selling point on this phone. I know a couple multimedia students that'll want this. When all is said and done though, it's still built on that lunk o' junk that is Symbian... I'll stick with my N900.

... although HDMI output would be awesome...

... but not for that phone as its only 320x640....
