For example i'm walking and i have a bag in one hand; or i'm drinking a bear (no t sit down); or i'm in the bus.... Come on, there a lot of situation where you have only one free hand. I'm speaking about only SMS app in portrait |

In a club/pub (mainly more so for clubs due standing up more) I often use one hand to text whilst holding a drink. I've not used the N900 in a club environment, but I'd imagine I'd wait till I finished a drink before texting. My opinion has only slightly changed since i last posted in this thread, I'd say only certain core apps could be better with portrait mode, rather than the whole system. For me those core apps would be Conversations and Media Player Then too go further E-Mail, App Manager, File Manager, Calendar could all benefit, but there are significantly less important than bug updates and what-not. However, I'm comfortably getting along in landscape mode, and have had no "I need portrait mode" moments! |

Re: new firmware n900 with portrait
Hm. Interesting thread.
When I first got my phone-puter (courtesy of NoobMonkey, thanks man) it was certainly one of the things I missed. I say that because I often used to have my other hand occupied with something else whilst I was texting - usually occupied with either beer or a smoke. Or Vodka. Or woman. Or child A. Obviously considering the importance of all of these things (note priority string) I was reluctant to relinquish the single handed texting function. An SMS app that supports portrait mode using T9 predicitve would certainly benefit me. Although, by very much the same token I also would like to see the media player with portrait support - why? Because when you are walking down the road, phone in pocket, and all you want to do is take it out of your pocket and change song, keeping your other hand nicely snuggled in the warm, it feels kinda.... Unbalanced and at risk taking a fall all the time you are juggling it with one hand trying to reach buttons configured for landscape. I just wanna make sure my phoneputer stays in pristine condition, whilst being as lazy as I possibly can and protecting my poor little donnies from frostbite. I like portrait. I could also whine and moan about a myriad of things that bug me a little. Like when you are charging the phone the input is in the polar opposite position to every other Nokia I have every owned and when I first got the phone, the of times I answered the phone and was speaking into the earpiece?! Yeh, nice one Nokia, you made a right prat out of me on more than one occassion! Whats the point in a firmware update to address portrait mode texting. There will be an app or a hack for that. As firmware updates go, they should be addressing glitches, bugs, and be offering performance improvements in terms of battery life and rootfs space, for example. Not portrait support. You want it, you code it. Says the n00b :) |

Re: new firmware n900 with portrait
I disagree. If he can drink a bear with a single hand while concentrating on typing with the other, he should be in N900 ads.
Just don't let Kathy know what you're doing to the bears. |
Re: new firmware n900 with portrait
For me portrait comes in handy for both making calls (which we have already) and texting.
Whilst hiking through a bustling rush hour quick one handed text replies aint so easy in landscape. However on quite happy with N900 landscape but as said portrait would come in handy. |
Re: new firmware n900 with portrait
i suggest that you buy e63 for single handed texting....
