I there , a while ago i was asking or telling about the problem that i'm having in reboot my phone...first because the intructions are not writen in my mother language, then , the n900 its new for me ...can u help me in a most easier way ?

If you don't know if your car has a V6 or V8 engine you don't upgrade it with unknown parts you bought on ebay ....
Maybe you can install a new radio but for other upgrades you should collect information BEFORE you damage your car!

the os its maemo 5 , i've downloaded the latest firmware version , and i had all the avaiable reps , its all that i know...man , why are u so harsh on people ?!! dont u understand that to have the knowlegde u firt have to be a Noob lol ...

can u clear me or not , in easy steps i meant ? by the way , the soft in my pc is vista basic edition , 32 bit , 2 gigs ram.... if that helps !!

yes, that helps. that was what I was asking for the whole time!

Now go to http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...ndows_7_32-bit, download the files, install flasher 3.5, put the firmware files in the directory, where flasher was installed.
then come back or proceed with the wiki, if everything is clear.

Okay. Which bits of the instructions do you not understand? If you say all of them then you risk being added to people's ignore list.

Please let us know your first language - there may be another native of your country on the forum.

You need to make time to do this and you need to be methodical. If you receive errors you need to tell us the exact error and not vague approximation.

kinda useless :p

but just as it has been said before.
1. clear title and no weird suggestions helps mainly
2. the people like to help here, many times learned myself here.
but if you are not reading the posts and just act like a total freek out guy that def does not help.

i always say three parts always should be in every help asking post:

When, Where, What helps to clarify all questions most of the time.

And also all components which are used additionally (PC OS etc hich can be caused the problem, or can be used for fix the problem)

And last but not least, if you only know how to switch on the device and your PC and nothing more.
Please do only use ready programs and nothing from Extra or testing. Safes from bad headaches :)


Finally, dont take every post personally some jokes are always allowed and all the people helping here need sometimes some changes and if there is a chance just nail it :)

you know everyday i read posts and see what people are doing . I love this post but you have to understand not everyone know how to program. People that get these phones are mostly like me and don't understand anything. We just got sold on what this phone can do but were misinformed that you have to do most if it from scratch .. I and i bet most of the user here would love to know how to do this with out bugging anyone. but i think (geeks) which is a good thing to be called here need to understand not everyone knows everything. I hope i can speak for for the non geeks but we do get lost here sometimes. to find a thread is hard so the easiest thing is to post another. very hard on everyone. is there a way on this forum to find your question that you posted without going on every page till you find it. search engine is not very non geek friendly.. ?? so guys thanks for the help on all the goodies you have develop and I am learning as fast as i can...:D:confused:

imo people who ask for help and don't supply such information would deserve to get the thread removed and banned for a month from this forum....

it is ridiculous to read 2 or 3 first pages of a thread before you have knowledge about any of those things mentioned.

the OP is a bit like car driver who freaks out if there is a granny at crosswalk 200m ahead: shoves gas pedal through the floor, covers his eyes with his hands and then shouts: help me talk.maemo.org!!!!

Some day there will surely be virus and trojans, because people happily load and install unsigned deb-files. It would be real easy currently to hack into several N900's.
Fortunately Meego will have RPM-package format and unsigned RPM-packages are widely known as a shame on packager.


Using dpkg to install programs, is almost always risky. (Only very very few DEB-files include a GPG signature.) Use apt-tools.

Why having Viruses and malware programed?all people using exactly the same devices with same OS as the devlopers. thats not making sense coz part of Linux

Try out Power Search below big offical search. I have found it more precise and powerful than the other. After search you can filter it to one area "talk", "wikipedia", "Brainstrom", "Bugzilla" etc.. Try it out.

Why did you venture into unstable land anyways?

Very few viruses/malware have been created for Linux at the moment. The majority of the ones people have encountered are "social experiments," simply proving that malware is possible on Linux.

People create viruses 1.) To gain personal information about others 2.) To use said information for immoral gains

A small amount viruses are created just to mess with people (i.e. the Life is beautiful for Windows).

Hi.

Every journey starts with but a single step.

A better way perhaps would be for you to make a start with the instructions and ask questions as you progress if you get stuck.

For instance.

1. Have you got a computer you can use?
2. Do you know what version of operating system is on that computer?

From the above you can at least make a start with identifying the correct instructions to follow from the update tablet wiki.

3) Just because the device has CPU, can run programs and has network connection. Most botnetworks are happy just to get access to computer resources, they don't necessary care about personal information. Just to have one bot more to their botnetwork, so they can sell DoS attacks and blackmail and sell/use bots as anonymity proxies.

I am very concerned about Maemo because the current security policy is as swiss cheese. People give straight *.deb links and people install them (dpkg) without any authentication check.

It is just a matter of time or perhaps we all aready have a sleeping horse in our devices.

Hi , a while ago I posted this thread , and did every step as it been told me to do , but when i tried to run the exe . , i was able to run nothing ... insted of a smartphone i got a stupidphone , .....lol...enough...going to take him to nokia care center...my litle dumbass baby lol...

lol...you did not get a stupid phone...saying that is like a person driving manual transmission car and complain about having to shift gears...If you are not willing to learn stick-shift, trade it in for an automatic car....the phone is just not meant for you...if you are not patient....:cool:

did you run the exe with the command described in the wiki? over the commandline of windows? (start - run - cmd)

My opinion is that some of the documentation about flashing is quite scary. I remember seeing one page that helpfully lists about twenty or thirty options you might want to try. Any newbie not scared by that page has to be crazy.

Flashing itself is pretty easy. Figuring out how to flash when you don't know what is going on is not necessarily easy.

I suppose there are Youtube videos on how to flash. Are there links to them somewhere?

The same was said about folks who could drive when the car first came out. Different words but the same sentiment I am sure.

I imagine the first guy to use a steam tractor in the village was considered a geek as well. The rest were sure referred to as Luddite a few decades later. Now the term Luddite came from those who objected to the use of machines in the textile industry in the 1800s

Basically all these people were the same. They feared becoming obsolete because they did not understand the new technology.

So before you continue referring to us geeks as abnormal.

Remember your the one asking for our help. And we can demo-straight what happens to people who insult and attack people who understand new tech. They fail.

HumanPenguin, Hmm nice to know this but you realize that there is huge amount of people to whom computer/technology is not tool to do work. It´s the way to entertain yourself and some people might think that after paying quite much they left all the "hard" brain work to Nokia.

But yeah word like "Normal" is quite dangerous to use, but on some level I understood what he actually meant by using this word. Thanks to my dear lovely friends and family who keep remembering me what it´s really like to be "end user". *sigh*

I've just read through this thread. There are points on both sides and some sensible ideas about improving reactions to people getting in over their head. The one thing I am more concerned about is people simply adding testing and dev repositories willy-nilly. Is this a case of not clear enough warnings in language understood by less technically savy uses or is it just being ignored?

hey , hey .. you guys have to understand that not a lot of people know that you have to put some time into a this phone. I don't know anything about programing but i got this phone anyways. Love that people have the same ideas as i do but they know how to make it happened. Just remember, the more people thatlike phones like these the better funding we will have for the future ... coming out with a open phone is risky because most people don;t know how to adjust and fix and install .Please be patient with the non geeks. ( Geeks in this site is an honor to be called) that freak out . they do not know what they do ... .
