Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
Does your school have wifi? Try configuring the connection, not searching for it

Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't that question mark mean that the device can't get an ip address from the dhcp server on the AP? I don't know how they manage their access points, but I saw some access points that do accept manually assigned ip addresses, even if they user dhcp. But they have to be in another subnet than the dhcp range. It's just a matter of configuration, but I think it's worth trying it.
Another idea... do your college wifi network use MAC filtering? At my university, we use VPN to tunnel through our central computing station to the outside internet in order to have secure authentication, encryption and of course big-brother like traffic filtering *argh*. But we also have parts of our wifi network for PDA or smartphone users without vpn. To secure and restrict the access, they user MAC filtering. One has to make an activation req to his/her MAC address in order to be able to connect. Just some hints that probably should be checked... |
Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
In some circumstances, I've gotten that question mark when I was too far from the access point. The nokia tablets are very sensitive and will often show networks that you can't connect to. The access point probably isn't as sensitive ( or it is picking up interference ) so maybe it can't "hear" you 800's request for an address. I haven't had very good luck connecting to networks with only 1 bar of signal.

Quote:
Once the IT finds a few connections ( Access Points ) nearby you can decide which one to select and Tap / Connect on to. This is based on whether you see a ' Lock ' next to the name of the AP. A ' Lock ' next to an AP name signifies a ' Secured AP ' and that you may need a ' Passphrase ' or a ' Security Key ' to connect and access Internet via them. In colleges usually, there maybe more than one AP and they maybe secure or otherwise. You may have to use Trial and Error method to see which one you can connect to.Good Luck ! ;) |
Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
Your college may have a VPN network setup, like mine, in which case you can't get online :(

Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
Dont't you have vpn accounts? Students , coworkers and assistants have their own vpn account at our university. Yesterday i configured vpnc an tested it today, it works fine. But sdrman seems to be right. When I do have only one status bar, I get the question mark globus. If it's greater 2 it connects allright. Same thing on other hotspots I tried. Today was my first day of a little warwalking, checking out the neighborhoods. Sdrman's theory seems to fit to my experience today.

ok guys i found out that i was just to far away but when trying to connect to gaim it just
says connecting but doesnt cannot any help? |
Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
At my university, you have to register your MAC address. It seems like you've solved your problem, but I wanted to add this to the troubleshooting ideas.

Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
You may have to log in to a web portal of some kind. Try opening. up a browser first.. Or else talk to their tech staff.
Some colleges require authentication before accessing the web. |
Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
My school does use a VPN. PPTP and IPSEC but neither of those seem to be currently supported on the N800.
I even offered a cash reward on this site for someone making any easy to use client with GUI, but not dice :( |
Re: Cannot connect to college internet please help
Huh? VPNC and OpenVPN are available.... VPNC works perfect. Nice GUI with simple and big "Connect" and "Disconnect" buttons.
