Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Maybe some of you had the chance to play around with a symbian device and use ovi maps 3.0. Do you consider it better or worst than the new Sygic for our N900?? What are the main differences?
I may stop waiting for ovi maps and go buy sygic if you say its worth it... What are your opinions? |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
I haven't use ovi map 3 but I am sure if you don't want to buy multiple regions of maps for sygic, you might as well wait for Ovi.
If you have the money, go for sygic. If you don't mind the wait, wait for Ovi 3. I am sure we will be getting an update by the end of the month (crossing my finger) and ovi map 3 might come along too. I am hoping.... |

I bought sygic yesterday, it rocks.
I would use Sygic HANDS DOWN over ovi maps. |

We can always hope that pr 1.2 will open the door to ovi map 3. I hate waiting so I got sygic. |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
We are now running maps 1.x. Should possible new major version for Maemo be 2.0 rather than 3.0 ?

Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Hopefully it'll run on the Meego release at some point ...

Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Long time reader, first time poster..
Sygic is functional and does what it needs to do. I bought it out of necessity and also because I want to help any dev who is willing to support this platform commercially. It has limitations such as there being no free text search (a feature of Ovi Maps) and the search is only by the POIs and addresses within its database whereas Ovi will search the internet, if connected. Example:- To get to Rock Radio's offices in Salford Quays -Ovi Maps search "Rock Radio Manchester" got me there straightaway. - Sygic needed the address to be entered. The traffic feature has not yet been activated (so far as I can see) in Sygic but is on the way. In Ovi Maps 3.0 (Symbian), it is there but is not very accurate most of the time. SISO rule applies, I suppose. Absent a genuine turn-by-turn, voice-guided nav offering from Nokia for its "flagship" OS, Sygic is literally the only game in town. It's at a comparable price to an off-the-shelf basic sat nav (go to Maplins or even Morrisons) but is on your phone so no extra hardware to leave in your car and get stolen. What more could you want to know about it? Would still like the Nokia flavour as it (3.0) is prettier, has better functionality and is free but I wouldn't mind a million pounds and a toilet-seat made of solid gold. If they aren't on the cards, I can dream about those and my Maemo version of Ovi Maps 3.0 at the same time. Now, Rovio. Where are those damned angry birds I have been waiting for...? |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Sygic all the way!.....get your credit card out and buy it like we all did.

Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
That bit about having to use the exact address to navigate with Sygic doesn't sound so bad. I use the exact address all the time on Maps. For me the Sygic price is a little steep though.

At some point Nokia is going to make Ovi Maps Qt based, and that is likely going to be the time when Maemo, or more likely MeeGo, version will be at feature parity with Symbian version. I wouldn't hold my breath while waiting. |

The price is a little high given that you can get a dedicated satnav for that now but, and this was the main thing for me, Sygic have made some money now and so others will follow. I was rather hoping that when Rovio saw that Sygic had released the app from their own site with their own payment service, they might follow for the extra packs on Angry Birds but no such luck. |

EDIT: Almost forgot to ask: Is this Sygic any good for navigating by foot? I never use the navigator in a vehicle. |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Ovi Maps search wins, it's the most useful search I've seen so far from map software..
And we're likely to have Ovi Maps 2.0 before 3.0 don't you think? ;-) |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Even though I was happy using MaemoMapper on my N810 in the car, I went ahead and splurged and spent the 49 EUR, $64 USD on Sygic just so I can have something to play with on my N900.
After all I haven't spent a dang thing on it in the 3 months or so that I have owned it so the cost wasn't to great. I mean, if I had an iPhone, even at a buck an app in three months time I would have pro'ly spent as much as Sygic costs or more... I know when I first got an iPAQ with WinMo 2003, I spent an easy extra $200 @ Handango during its first 3 months and that's just for programs like the ones that either came free, or were made available for free in the N900's repositories. I got to tell you I'm having a blast, playing, tweaking, and finally seeing what multi-tasking is all about on the N900. I plan to post up a detailed review this week-end, now that I have more time available to me. It will include screen shots that I have been collecting all week to show folks why, from just a hobbyist' point of view, I think this was money well spent. In the end I believe Nokia will add a more functional "Navigation" program to the N900. However, just as a more functional browser didn't come for the N800 until just before the N810 dropped, I think it will be a while before we see anything from OVI offering what Sygic does now. I also believe when we do see a better OVI, if you have both programs, they will compliment each other nicely. Sygic for going to town traveling through possible spotty signal areas on the way; then OVI showing 3D landmarks and satellite views when walking and traveling by cab, once you get to that more well connected town. |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
I just bought sygic last week and it seems good, the only think I'm not a fan of right now is how long it takes to get a lock - the GPS does not get a coarse lock similar to Ovi maps 1.0 on maemo, it searches until it gets a fixed lock. It seems like a great application though and the turn by turn is great.
When I had a 5800 I had Ovi Maps 3 installed on it and while I did not have turn by turn on it, it was a great application. It has a lot of additional features that sygic does not have - the integration of Michelin, lonely planet and weather built in. The beta version 3 (.02 I think) I was running was fast and accurate. It was also easy to download maps for multiple countries on it, this is something sygic lacks which is unfortunate. The 3D maps in Ovi 3 is also great as you can see how actual landmarks look in the map letting you get a visual indicator when you get lost. Very cool feature. Now with free turn by turn on Ovi Maps 3.0, I would say it is the superior product.... Both are great apps but I think Ovi Maps 3 brings more to the table just based on free map availability alone - I did not mind paying a $80-$90 for Sygic maps but the downside is that I only have access to the maps for the country I bought! |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Sygic is the superior product IMHO. It has far more features, is significantly lighter and can be used without a network connection.

Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
Has to be sygic for me pureley for been able to customize it to your needs. You cannot even change the speed camera alert tone to a custom one in Ovi Maps 3 S60. Or if you can its very well hidden. Been using Sygic for a week now and have been well impressed.
Gets a lock in under 10 secs with network assistance and under a minute without. I dont think Ovimaps ever got a lock without network assistance for me. |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
i had both on n95-8GB and n97, i would have said maps 3 was the winner as it was smooth and accurate and GPS lock was fast. But the version of Sygic on n900 is good as maps 3 if not better and i like the camera alerts on Sygic, however they are the only 2 apps the feel the same when you use it.

Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
I've been using navigation software on my phone for a while now, and I've never resented paying for companies to develop software that I enjoy the use of..
The premium of €50 ($60) is cheap compared to TomTom symbian software which was closer to €100.. My only real issues are: there isn't a trial version (especialy since its only a beta!), If this company specialises in developing navigational software.. will they even exist in 6 months time (tomtom had half its share price knocked off straight away when Nokia announced free navigational software) to support the product (develop the beta). I will go for the Navit option for the time being and hopefuly will get Ovi maps with audio turn by turn instructions soon (which doesnt seem like it needs to be developed to much to give audio instructions..?), and hopefuly favourites aswell.. :) having said all that - it does seem to be 1 of the most highly anticipated developments of the nokia N900 by the seemingly nokia loyalist community here.. would be in their interests to be nice to you guys and hurry up.. |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
I asked this in the huge Sygic thread but didn't see a response. Does anyone know what happens if you buy Sygic and then subsequently lose you phone or have it stolen? Would you have to purchase it again when your phone is replaced or do they have a way of locking the version on your lost phone and letting you download it again?
|
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
I would have thought you could give them an IME number and they could re-asign your activation code to that device (not the stolen or lost IME)..
I transfered my TomTom liesence from a nokia e61 to a nokia e51 and they were very helpful about it (but thats TomTom not Sygic) |
Re: Ovi Maps 3.0 or Sygic?
you might have to proof to them that you really did lose the phone...otherwise they may not believe you...depends on how nice the people you're talking to are...you should contact Sygic about this issue before buying...most of us will never have the right answer for u as we don't work for sygic...
