As an n810 and a n900 owner I can tell you that the N810 did not have the same marketing.

When I got my N810 most people had not heard about it.

I have seen N900 ads on the tube in london and carphone warehouse is advertising it with large placards in the front of the shop.

Nokia is not making an effort to give people the impression that this is a development device. They are certainly not giving the impression that it is not a phone.

It annoys me that people post complaints here. The one place that if they had spent time before buying the device they would have gotten a clear understanding of the device.

But all these folks complaining about the lack of phone functionality are a direct result of Nokia selling this as a consumer device in the phone market.

It is prolly time to create a wiki article and politely point them all to it.

Funny that this argument persists; it actually has turned into an interesting discussion by some.

I would like to point out two things.

1. No laptop will ever fit into a pocket. Laptops that fit into pockets are not called laptops and they never will be. A laptop is something that fits on your lap. It doesn't fit in your pocket.

2. Those of us who have been here for years have been saying "it's not a phone" for years. People called the N800 a phone. People called the N810 a phone. And they probably called the N770 a phone, but I wasn't here yet. People just naturally thought it was a phone. That didn't mean Nokia was responsible to make it a phone.

The N900 makes phone calls. It is a phone. But the phones they had in 1950 were phones, and they didn't have portrait mode. Phones do not necessarily have portrait mode.

Politeness is a virtue. The powers that be don't seem to care about politeness when impoliteness is expressed by people not critical of the N900. They only care about impoliteness when it is anti-Nokia.

They are wrong. Impoliteness is bad.

Well. It might be too drastic. and maybe too late for Maemo5. But the way I would've done it, is make Portrait the default. and Lansdscape the selective. Like all other devices.

so you're free to setup your widgets in Portrait. play with them. even the menu is portrait, mult-tasker is portrait and so on......

Then , the apps that should have a landscape mode are the browser and the sms.

There's no supposedly about it. The vice-president of all things Maemo broadcasted that statement live from Europe shortly after the n900 was announced. I wasn't at the meeting either, but I watched it live. As did others here.

I have no other recollection of someone so high up that is responsible for a product making such a statement. Ever.

Stop trying to rewrite history. It was said by Nokia live for all the world to see and hear. Not supposedly, and not by some blogger.

i'm still struggling to understand why people would be so opposed to it being an option, no-one will force you to text in portrait if you dont want to. call the n900 what you will, phone, pda, pocket-top (if that catches on i want credit! :P ) mini pc, i want it to do all it can do, why tell me it shouldn't just because you don't need that feature?
i knew it didn't support mms when i bought it, yet now thanks to fmms i can receive mms - i'm a happy bunny! but before fmms was released did the same people gnash their teeth and say it coluldn't wouldn't and shouldn't happen?

The hardware is landscape by default due to the keyboard. Some other devices don't have a keyboard so the default orientation is not so clear-cut.

The situation you propose wouldn't solve the situation of both orientations just start a lot of debates about why landscape wasn't default when there was a keyboard.

Most computer and media devices are tending towards landscape mode now due to movies etceteras. This isn't to sy that portrait isn't useful just that with a pop-down keyboard landscape is more natural if you are going to have a primary orientation.

I've not seen anyone actively opoosed to text in portriat at all. The effort expended has been to explain why landsape was chosen as a default. Ideally portrait as well would be good but if you have a hardware keyboard and only had portrait so couldn't use it that too would be odd.

I'm sure if the demand is there and someone inspires a developer to become interested then sms in portrait will be made available but in the meantime there are more important things for Nokia developers to work on where community developers can't.

If people really want portrait SMS then why not post a request or brainstorm? Think ghrough what you would like, post the entry clearly and explain when people ask for clarification. If you can persuade a developer that it is worth their time then I am sure they will pick it up and it will happen. Maybe even Nokia will decide to use it as a starting point. Posting entries on a talk thread however accomplishes nothing worthwhile.

my two cents on a very old topic, with a minor development:

someone using a rotate hack on PR 1.2 SDK discovered a PORTRAIT keyboard! the problem was that the bottom keys were overlapping. Im not sure whether that was an incomplete function that is/was being developed or if it was simply due to Maemo's on rotation algorithims. The point is that it could easily be done by simple resizing but may not be very ergonomical.

As for portrait mode, the Braek hack showed that many elements can easily be used in portrait. But i dont want them all. I only need Conversations (Braek shows it is VERY easy to do), mail, and the music player.

As for autorotating the desktop, simply maintain the placement of all icons but flip their image so that they can be viewed vertically. as for widgets and their contents, some will work under this idea (square ones, like simple note) while rectangular one could for now stay as they were while in portrait. that's an imperfect but handy quick fix.
