any luck connecting N800 to Airport-equipped Mac?
 

Hi, this subject was discussed in another thread somewhat, but not specifically for the Mac OS X platform.
I was wondering if anyone succeeded in connecting to internet via an Airport-equipped Mac, by using Mac OS X 'Internet Sharing'?

By following the wizards suggestions I got connected by a local IP link, or IP-local link, which won't allow further communication.
By setting IP/router/DNS addresses manually on the N800, I got what seems a normal connection; when using it however, I get a 'Network Problem'. It doesn't matter if I switch off firewall or WEP, the error remains.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I did connect with my N800 in France to Airport-equipped Mac (no WEP). No problem at all to get on the Internet. Imac it was, very recent (1 month purchase).

Has to be something else...

Seb, exactly what did you do to get succesful connection?
I'm trying to connect via 'Internet Sharing', thru the inboard Airport-card in an also recent iMacIntel. I can connect via an Airport basestation succesfully, or any (open) hotspots in my area for that matter, just not by 'Internet Sharing', thus by internal Airport card ...

on my n800 nothing at all. i just searched for the wifi connections selected the one, voila. on the Imac nothing at all either. just started browsing. i could ask for the settings of the imac and airport to be sent to me.
but the obstacle you describe might indicate either an old style adsl connection (the one requiring a log-in authentication ot the subscriber) or cable-tv internet : in finland, its impossible to connect a secundary device to internet on some cable modems...policy of the cable provider (again specific of the early wifi age, when internet providers feared to see clusters of users for free sucking on one point). last possibility: no internet connection: wifi works fine,but you re stopped. there's a specific notice from the connection wizard on the tablet though. happened to me once.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing; in order to connect to the internet over a wifi-connection using only an *internal* Airport-card you have to set/configure 'Internet Sharing' on your mac (I suppose this will set the card in 'ad-hoc' mode). I can succesfully connect to the internet (using the same ISP) using an external basestation, which I borrowed for the occasion.

There is a thread here which shows how to make it work for the 770, but on following the same procedure (setting IP/router/DNS IP-adresses manually) on the 800 I still get a 'Network Problem' ... puzzled ...

Correct. My mistake, sorry. I connected to the external airport of the Imac. I did not think why would one want to connect through internal airport since one can do it through the external one so easily. So I replied too fast.

There is something not quite right about the DHCP server that's in OSX I've now dealt with 3 devices that will not work via Wifi internet connection sharing. Each of these devices issues the same set of DHCP messages and not one works.


Here's how another computer does it

Comp1 : DCHP DISCOVER on IPxxxxx
Comp2 : DCHP ACK
Comp1 : DHCP REQUEST on IPxxxxx
Comp2 : DHCP LEASE


that works fine. But Nintendo DS, Belkin wifi skype phone and the N800 all fail to issue the DHCP request. Seemingly this isn't a problem with most base stations as they seem to issue a lease based entirely on receiving a DISCOVER.

In theory, allocating a fixed IP to the device should get around this problem. However it seems that after a given period of time the wifi on the mac stops responding and the only way to get it going again is to turn the wifi off and on again.

I've been trying to investigate replacing the inbuilt DHCP server with something else that might be a little more lax in how it works so far no-one else seems to have attempted it and my Unix skills have dried up a lot in the last few years of using a mac.

Hi!

I'm newbie with N800, But I have had Macs 3 years. However, I found one workaround for that problem by doing some Googling: (there was exactly same problem with Sony PSP and Nintendo DS)

So, because it's recognized that there is a problem with DCHP, you have to setup IPs etc. manually. You can try my setup:

IP: 10.0.2.11 (Ip given by you)
GW: 10.0.2.1 (computer's adress which is sharing the net)
NMASK: 255.255.255.0
DNS: 10.0.2.1

(Soooo simple, isn' it?)

.. That's all. One step yet: you have to restart wireless sharing on your OSX.

Voila! It works. I'm currently listening netradio via my new N800 through connection shared by MiniMac :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

If it sets it up in Ad-Hoc mode, doesn't it disconnect from the WiFi network and then only set up a peer network, and thus requiring you to then connect to the Internet via another method, say ethernet to your DSL ISP connection?

That was simple, and yesss, it works! I did roughly the same thing: manual setting, but DNS IP from `dig`, broadcast 255.255.0.0, as laid out by some other 770 thread in here, which didn't work for the 800. Router and DNS host being the same IP makes sense.

Set that up, the n800 says connected.

Internet sharing on the mac says that I am sharing internal modem connection (as I'm on hols that is what I'm using) to computers connected by airport.

Firewall is on, the Mac laptop can surf the net fine.

Using tcpdump I can see the n800 is trying to contact the outside world, but another tcpdump that is watching the ppp connection shows no packets are passing.

I can ping 10.0.2.1, and I can ping my ISP's DNS.

But I can't get out otherwise.

tcpdump tells me the n800 is trying to get to www.yahoo.com:

11:01:38.771898 IP 10.0.2.11.evtp > f1.www.vip.sp1.yahoo.com.http: S 3257834839:3257834839(0) win 5840 <mss 1460,sackOK,timestamp 349496 0,nop,wscale 1>

but there's no equivalent packets on the ppp side, so the internet sharing isn't working.

I turn off the firewall and suddenly it all works! Turn on the firewall again, stops working.

Sigh.

at home no problem as the ADSL modem handles both wireless and firewall. No bloody idea why Apple thought firewalling off the damned internal network they are supposed to be sharing was a good idea...

I see a reasonably obvious warning saying to disable the firewall when I try to enable Internet sharing. Do you see that?

If it's there, it is not obvious :) Because no, I didn't see it.

And a quick check shows that I didn't see it because it isn't there.. Not in 10.3 anyway.

hmmm my apologies for bringing up sort of an old thread, but I'm running into a wall...

Thanks to the excellent advice in this thread I was able to join my home network (One iMac sharing an Ethernet linked router connection over airport/wifi to two other iMacs), but I can't connect to the internet. I do not have any firewalls enabled and the other iMacs on the network connect to the 'net fine, so I know it's not a computer setting. I've messed with all the settings for the access point on the tablet and nothing seems to work. Any help would be much appreciated :)

I'm guessing he is using the built in ethernet interface to supply the internet connection to the Mac Mini.
