"Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/e...mostly-a-myth/
This was posted 3 days ago, March the 26th, 2010. Man I'd feel like an idiot if I wrote that  It's sort of like writing about the impracticality and infeasibility of gasoline-powered cars in the 30s. |
Re: "Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"
Engadget will publish anything to generate traffic.
Also, most of the post about Nokia phones there, are just flamebait to generate lots of comments, which generates traffic, which generates income from sponsors, and when things get out of hands, they shut down commenting. |
Re: "Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"
This kind of sounds like when Sega was killing Nintendo with the Genesis, when they still only had the NES out. Nintendo kept telling people "8bit is all there really is and all anyone needs".
In this case (fueled by their forum spin), it is both Apple and MS spinning for their OS's which have minimal to no multi-tasking. Though register stacks and wait states are used to give the illusions of some levels of multi-tasking on most mobile OS's, the N900 with Maemo 5 does make a more honest attempt at it, more than any other device. Uni-tasking! Watch both Apple and MS pimp for it ;) |
Re: "Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"
Sooooo true, the weeks and days before the release of the iPad they posted speculations and nonsense articles about it every few minutes or so...
The only thing a sane person can do is to avoid Engadget altogether! |
Re: "Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"
Well I've managed to get 36 programs running at the same time before it froze and I had to reboot!
If that ain't multitasking I don't know what is! |
Re: "Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"

Re: "Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"
I think there is a point to this article.
Multitasking to expedite the time to switch between non active\idle applications is an unnecessary resource hog (ram, swap file, cpu) if you can figure out a way to launch/close the apps in a similar amount of time; 'True' use of multitasking (in the mobile context), imho, is to run a service that needs to maintain background connection: downloader, streaming media, navigation system, continuous calculation, etc. A big difference between the necessity to implement multitasking on a desktop system and a mobile one is in their screen size. When you can only display one (optimized) application at a time, then you lose the requirement of looking at 2 (or more) apps running together side by side. |
Re: "Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth"
Hell desktop multitasking is mostly a myth. On Windows, anyway.
