My N900 Touchscreen

Hi guys...Its been a really depressing week for me in my life. I made a huge....huge ....huge mistake of applying a screen protector. The fact is it was not applying the screen protector that was the mistake but using a few drops of water to apply it because i read somewhere it would prevent air bubbles. However I am no fool to let in large amounts of water and drown my phone ...and let me reinstate that I care for my phone more than my wife even.....:p Either way after I applied the screen protector successfully, I decided to blow on my phone for I dont know what reason and I saw that my phone screen went hazy...and the desktop home screen started shifting on its own. I powered down my phone immediately and removed the back panel and battery. I cleaned the phone from the outside and removed all traces of water if any. Then i decided to keep the phone in a bag of rice to absorb any moisture that would be present in it. After 3 days I decided to startup my phone...and everything seemed to work normally. The led lights, The speakers were working as i heard the nokia bootup screen ....until it came to the desktop !...where I was met with an unresponsive touch screen. The screen dint respond to my touches until after frantically trying for a minute, I heard the tap sound that comes when the phone recognizes a touch sensation. I decided to power down the phone and decided to place it back in the rice to absorb any remaining moisture that might have caused the touchscreen issue. Today its the fourth day I removed the phone from the rice and boot it up but to no avail the touch screen is still unresponsive. I even reflashed the the firmware just to be sure....Any help would be greatly appreciated and please avoid corny comments as I am already mentally subdued after the incident....:(

Have you tried removing the screen protector? Sorry if its an obvious question.

What kind of screen protector are you using ?

Re: My N900 Touchscreen

having applied screen protectors to multiple ipod touches and nintendo ds's, I see no reason why wetting the screen protectors would cause any damage unless you used far, far too much.(although screen protector companies seem to recommend a solution of purified water with a very small amount of soap, not just straight water).

Regardless, I would give up on the rice thing - any damage that would have been caused by water would be the shorting of something inside, pretty much guaranteeing irreparable damage. The only way water can damage an electronic is by shorting two points, breaking them, or erosion caused by any impurities in the water (also, pretty much irreparable). Rice / cat litter / silica gel are all great at preventing damage, but what's done, has likely been done.

Re: My N900 Touchscreen

The sad part is I cant receive calls or do anything with the phone as everything is routed through the touch screen .. another thing is that the screen isn't plain dead...it works at times but not calibrated and hence not able to to get into the main menu or anything. I can hear the tap sound at times when i touch certain points on the screen.

Actually, rice can in some cases save electronics that turned off (and wouldn't turn back on) after being exposed to moisture. See this video, and the followup. (Spoiler: They spray half a liter of water on an N900 and it eventually turns off. After 20 hours in a bag of rice it turns back on and works perfectly.)

But if it hasn't worked after four days, I doubt it's going to. :( Good luck, OP.

Watch what you are saying online. Your wife might be reading these forums like anyone else :D You can't get an easy replacement for her like you could do for your screen.

Re: My N900 Touchscreen

Since you mentioned the touch screen works on certain parts of the screen, have you tried calibrating the screen under settings?

Re: My N900 Touchscreen

I've cracked a P800 screen due to putting too much pressure on - touch completely ruined - thought I might be able to get a replacement online...no joy.

I've damaged a P990 screen by cleaning it with wet cloth that should only be damp - replaced under warrenty. I lucked out - the P990 had a water damage indicator (white sticker turns red if exposed to water) which was still white. Not sure if the N900@has something similar. So you may get lucky with a warranty claim.

Otherwise given its a slider I would guess you might be able to replace the whole unit

You can get a replacement screen for about €100:

Note touch screen is seperate part - maybe you can find out if they have that part too.

Thanks for the info...the lcd works perfectly fine... its the touch screen ( The outer casing) that might be having the problem

Re: My N900 Touchscreen

The touchscreen could have been damaged by the intense localized heat when you were trying to blow it. A possibility.

Re: My N900 Touchscreen

I managed to wreck my touchscreen on the 5800XM by pressing down on it too hard. It was a similar situation of me applying a screen over it and I guess I applied pressude pretty evenly throughout the surface of the device with same result. My touchscreen would work from time to time, but sometimes an icon in a certain place on the screen would get pressed by itself.

Took it into a Nokia Care point, it took them less than 24hrs to replace the screen with no cost to me. Naturally they also cleared out any and all dust under my screen. :)

Re: My N900 Touchscreen

i was playing football, with my n900 in my pocket:(
it was raining, and when i tackled, the n900 went all wet! i let it open till the match was over, and when i got my phone back, everything was working besides the touchscreen.
i closed and opened it for 100 times and nothing happened...then i got home, and i blew some COLD air from my head-drier and put the battery back in....the result was the same...after that i put the charger on, and i opened my n900...i closed it, and when i opened it again, everything was working properly :) (the only thing not working right is the backlight...it stays on forever, and i cant reduce it)
try it:)
