VNC client on the 770

I really want to try VNC client on the 770, but there is no installable version yet.

Can someone compile the version at:
http://ln-slack-maemo.sourceforge.net/

thx.

gr,
Hans

LN-VNC-Maemo-0.1.tar.gz

Is there really nobody is this community who knows how to install/compile/unpack or whathever to get this to work on the 770??

I have only a 770 (and a windows xp machine ;-))
So i have to do it only with xterm on the 770 i guess

gr,

Hans

Already tried minutes after the dev posted about it on maemo-users. It does not work yet. Seems that the dev has it running in Scratchbox (the maemo simulation environment), but it's not working on the actual 770 yet.

Is there anymore news known about the port of this program or any other client/viewer solution to control another (Ms)pc?

gultig 2005-12-03 18:11

There has been one other attempt that at least works on the 770. The problem is that there is no virtual keyboard support for it yet. You'll have to wait until someone has the free time, and the will to add this if you can't add it yourself.

bigboote 2005-12-11 23:51

Gultig, what is this other attempt? Do you have a link? Would a USB keyboard (as discussed at http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...read.php?t=564) work with that VNC port?

Given the various excited discussions about what a great tool the 770 would be as a pocket remote controller for admins, etc, you'd think the community would be a little more active about getting the VNC client working on the 770.

bigboote 2005-12-12 00:59

OK, I found the alternate VNC client at:
http://vidar.gimp.org/n770.phpx

I installed it and gosh darn if it doesn't actually work!

Keyboard access would be nice, but seeing a tiny version of the XP screen at my office is still pretty thrilling (and no, I don't get out a lot).

Bigboote, is the graphical part of this VNC client working?
With other words can you see the server screen and navigate with through the touchscreen?

I wonder also why there is so less interest to get this thing work.
It will be great to use the 770 as remote, like for example a music browser.

Yes, the VNC client shows my WinXP PC desktop (running the UltraVNC server). You can use the stylus as a remote mouse to manipulate the XP desktop.

Problems:

- You can't resize, zoom, or fullsize the display (but you do get slider bars so you can scroll around to see different parts of the desktop).

- No keyboard support. I'm hoping to get a USB keyboard running and will report back whether this works with the VNC client.

PS: if Vidar, the dev who did the VNC port, is lurking, or someone knows how to contact him: he needs to update his email address on his website (http://vidar.gimp.org/n770.phpx).

bigboote 2005-12-13 07:27

FYI: I bought and rigged up a BTC USB keyboard according to the suggestions at http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...read.php?t=564

As reported, the keyboard works great, including with Vidar's VNC client!

when i want to start the vncviewer.bin with xterm i get 'PERMISSION DENIED'?

This is what i do :

starting xterm

cd media/mmc1/

./vncviewer.bin myhost:192.168.1.109 -passwd=zxc

PERMISSION DENIED

bigboote 2005-12-13 08:20

I think you need to copy vncviewer.bin into the /bin directory.

To do that copy, I think you need to be root (eg "sudo cp vncviewer.bin /bin").

aflegg 2005-12-13 09:52

Yes, /media/mmc1 (the MMC card) is mounted with "noexec" - presumably for security reasons.

fredoll 2005-12-13 10:34

you can copy it to your home directory /home/user or ~ and execute it from there

Hybride 2005-12-13 12:49

Thx all, but sorry i am a complete Linux rooky

How is the copy command line to copy vncviewer.bin from ./media/mmc1 to the user dir?
(when i am i that directory)

Is there a way in Linux to create a sort off batchfile or shortcut to execute vncviewer with commandline options from the menu.

Even better we could have SAMBA which will let your 770 see your windows machines and shared folders (and vice versa.) Play them with your 770.

Put your 770 in a car with attached USB hard-drive and wi-fi your tunes to the car (or vice-versa.) Remove the 770 for on-the go internet.

gareth 2005-12-14 02:26

Holy crap, it worked perfectly, that is awesome! (aside from the keyboard issue which I will be working on as soon as I get some USB sockets from CPC)

That would have been the only other reason I would need to carry my laptop around with me, I just need a bluetooth phone and I am done for all my portable comms needs.

For those not able to get it running:

- install xterm
- copy vncviewer.bin onto the MMC
- start xterm
- type:
Code:

cd ~
cp /media/mmc1/vncviewer.bin .
./vncviewer.bin hostname:portnumber -passwd=yourpassword

The default port for VNC is 5900, you can probably leave it out though. I always run my VNC installs off a different port though, just to be safe, but obviously use strong passwords too.

Thx Gareth!

Like i questioned before; is there a way to enter the startup commandline with parameters on a more easy way than typing the hole thing again and again in Xterm?

Hybride 2005-12-14 17:36

WOW! This is great!

Through the menu you also can get full screen

Thanks for that tip.

BTW: if you have a keyboard attached: F8 gives you the menu. Also, you can specify full screen mode in the command line by adding "Fullscreen=1".

However, when I go full screen with VNC I have to power down the 770 to exit. Also, in fullscreen mode the menu freezes or becomes inaccessible. Has anyone figured out how to exit gracefully from full screen mode?

Write a script and just run that, or if any of the shells support alias and .profile file you could just stick the alias in there.

Thx, but i need 'how to' with that, because i am a complete linux rooky. Can you help cAPSLOCK?
