n800: no memory card inserted

Hi,

I've acquired a n800 few days ago (through Nokia's website), but yesterday the External slot stopped to be recognized by the N800.
The card used for it work (both on my PC & in the internal slot), but won't be recognized when plugged in the external slot of the n800. I always have the "No memory card inserted".

I did not misused the n800, just played some MP3 and browsed the web.

After this happened I wanted to investigate a little more and installed Xterm. Here is what I have in /etc/fstab:

Code:

rootfs / roofs defaults,errors=remount-ro.noatime 0 0
/dev/mmcblk0p1 /media/mmc1 vfat rw,noauto,nodev,noexec,nosuid,utf8,uid=29999 0 0

Where is the other SD slot?

Is it a software problem? or is it hardware?

Note: I used a 4Go card in the external slot (but it is recognized and working in the internal slot)

Another person has the same problem (French forum):
cf. on Maemofr: http://maemofr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=2818#p2818

Thanks
Max

Snap!

I posted this earlier today:

Now I know I'm not the only one. I wonder what the problem is ...

Just asking the obvious here - have you closed the little plastic door on the external slot (and for the internal slot, replaced the battery cover)? Neither card will be mounted until the respective door or cover is closed.

hehe ... yep.

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

Sure I did.

It seems more and more to be a Hardware problem. I re-flashed my N800, but after the reboot, the external slot is still "dead".
I bet the only solution is to send it back to Nokia and buy a new one... :(

Did you check with dmesg that there are no errors while mounting or accessing the card?

I get exactly the same output with a smaller card, except for the CMD-1 errors.

CMD-1 is "initiate initialisation process" command, which seems to be timing out. This does not happen with a smaller card, so I wonder if this is card capacity related.

I'm going to try creating a smaller partition on the card to see if its partition size related, but I probably won't get the chance today.

Strange that this only applied to the external slot. I don't know if it gets us any closer to finding out if its a hardware or software issue ...

Mike.

I did manage to try this before I headed to work. It made no difference. I think I'll try a card from a different manufacturer. I know there is a thread with working 4GB SD cards, but can anyone confirm a manufacturer that they have definitely working in the external slot?

Ok.. Anyway I can't send it back these days.
Note that these cards are not recognized anymore by the external slot (on my N800):
- Danelec RS-MMC 1GB (the one used on my previous n770)
- Nokia MiniSD 128 Mo
- Transcend SD 4GB

You're saying that cards <128Mo now only work?

Thanks,

Can you tell me more about that card?
How big is it? Which formating is it? FAT? FAT32?

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

Its a Sandisk 4GB card. I also have now installed the SDHC kernel, and checked a 4GB Sandisk SDHC card which works as well.

I've decided that the Transcend cards don't work at all. Even the one that seemed to be working in the inside slot isn't working correctly. I had copied about 2GB of music on there. It was skipping and jumping about.

The Sandisks have no such problems.

As an aside ... I tried a Sandisk card on the Zaurus a couple of years ago. I formatted it with ext2 and it failed miserably to work. Worked fine with a FAT filesystem.

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

I've got Transcend 4GB SDHC and Transcend 8GB SDHC cards working fine with the SDHC kernel (from Phil Langdales web site).

Where did you buy the Transcend card - eBay? These are the "COMMON counterfeit brands found flooding on eBay" (quoted from this page):

Quote:

More than 95% of all 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB USB Flash Drives listed on eBay are counterfeit items and have 'fake' capacities. 100% of all 16GB and 32GB USB Flash Drives are FAKE.
  • They were reprogrammed from much smaller cousins 128MB, 256MB and 512MB capacity drives for quick profit!
  • Difficult to differentiate visually, as they look like cousin to a real mccoy. Most of them even have brand new packaging, serial numbers like a real mccoy.

COMMON counterfeit brands found flooding on eBay are:-
  • SanDisk - Cruzer Mini (SDCZ2) or Cruzer Micro (SDCZ4).
    • Most fake SanDisk display the capacity as 'G' instead of 'GB' on the item and packaging.
      • FAKE SanDisk Cruzer USB Flash Drives Exposed
      • FAKE SanDisk Extreme Compact Flash Cards Exposed
      • FAKE SanDisk Ultra Compact Flash Cards Exposed
      • FAKE SanDisk Ultra Secure Digital Cards Exposed
  • Sony - Micro Vault.
    • Counterfeit Sony Micro Vault does not bundle with software such as 'Virtual Expander'.
    • Most fake Sony display the capacity as 'G' instead of 'GB' on the item and packaging.
    • All Sony Vaio USB Flash drives available on eBay are counterfeit as 'Vaio' refers to Sony proprietary branding reserve for Sony notebook series only.
    • All Sony 8GB USB Flash drives on eBay are also counterfeit.
      • FAKE Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo MagicGate Cards Exposed
      • FAKE Sony Micro Vault USB Flash Drives (Exposing soon!!!)
  • Kingston - Data Traveller I & II.
    • Counterfeit Kingston does not bundle with software such as 'Migo'.
    • A well-known counterfeit Kingston Data Traveller with an identical serial number appearing across all 4GB (white body with black handle) and 8GB (white body with orange handle) versions at the back of its retail packaging, SN: TCO7773-00156959, LK: A510M1D-5380562U. On the side of the item it may have some small printing showing 'DTI', 'KF08 1 9 0 5 5V' and '5262-014.AOOLF CHINA'.
    • All Kingston 8GB USB Flash drives on eBay are counterfeit.
  • Imation - Swivel & Mini.
    • Counterfeit Imation does not bundle with software such as 'Imation Flash Manager'.
  • BenQ, Dane-Elec, Hyundai, Laser, LG, Toshiba, Transcend, TwinMOS.

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

@w14 - try the serial number check on the Transcend UK site:

http://www.transcend-uk.com/Support/...=2&Func2No=126

Enter the serial number without the hyphen - the serial number for one of my 4GB SDHC modules is 156334-3673 and appears to be valid.

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

This is from a N800 with SDHC kernel.

The internal slot (/dev/mmcblk0) has an 8GB SDHC Transcend card.
The external slot (/dev/mmcblk1) has a 4GB SD SanDisk card.

The 8GB card has a 6.5GB vfat partition (only 128Mb swap in use so far) and a second 1GB ext2 partition (empty - just reformatted it and mounted manually).

The 4GB card has a single vfat partition, full of audio/video files.

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

I have a major concern here: I have no more "mmcblk1" in /dev
(even with a card inside)

However, mmcblk0 works well and mounts correctly to /media/mmc2, as expected.

What does it mean?
Definitely hardware problem?

Thanks for the help.

Max, have you solved this problem somehow? Now I have N800 with exactly the same symptoms and wonder what to do with it...

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

* You may also want to try restarting your device if you have tried, as some cards will require this!
1 made sure the battery back panel and external cover are both closed.
2 restarted the control panel to check the new memory
3 the internal card reader sometimes has issues if it's not inserted correct, make sure it's pushed all the way back(not too hard now) and then pull the clip over

# if you accidently format your large memory card, you will need to connect it via USB to your computer to re-format it to sizes over 2gb

Also:
I have installed the kernel and successfully have 4GB SDHC Kingston card in my n800... too bad I can't put it in my internal slot and increase the internal memory by more than 128 MB though :( is there a patch for this anywhere?

rcull 2007-05-18 05:48

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

With the SDHC kernel installed there should be no reason the card shouldn't work in the internel slot!

Unfortunately not. I still have this very annoying problem. No card will work in the external slot (even after reboot/restart/flash/SDHC Kernel etc.).
So I now "only" have a 4GB SD Card in the Internal Slot (and nothing in the external).

I'll ask for a repair or exchange as soon as I get back to my country.

However, I have one side question for those having a working external slot:
When you put your card in, do you have a small "click" sound when the card is in place (and clicking/pushing again will release the card)

If yes, it means my problem is hardware related, coz I have no sound/click feeling at all.

Thanks
Max

Milhouse 2007-05-19 00:24

Re: n800: no memory card inserted

The external slot does not support the ejector functionality that is present in the 770 slot. On the N800, there should be no click and pushing the card will not release it as you have to pull it out - there's a small indentation at the top of the card designed to allow a fingernail to extract the card from the slot.

I had the same issue and found that if the N800 is connected to a USB, you will get a "No Memory card inserted" message. If I disconnect the USB cabled from the N800 and restart File Manager, the SD cards are available.

Hope this helps.
