Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
jeeze not another fecking 'its not a phone' by a fanboy or 50 Vs 'it dont do what it says on the tin' thread.
It is a phone as Nokia advertise it. But the phone app is shite. It is a mobile computer. With a few features that need ironing out. And its not great at everything which is why Meego and the N98056F1 is on the cards. Can we move on now. |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
Hello all,
I think we should be honest and getting the tense out of this stories. Of course we all agree that the device is not the best Mobile phone which is on the market, and yes we know that its a Internet Tablet with phone functionality. But heh, the functionality of the phoen part really kinda sucks doesnt it? So when putting a phone part into a device like this, it should support the basics of any other low coast ******** phone. I think in this everybody agrees. Im not talking about a N-Series or I Phone but at least like a NOKIA 3210 the functionality should be given and be usable. Its a wonderful toy for me and I dont lack too much the phone funcionality due I also carry around a other Mobile phone but still. About the missing calls, I remarked that mainly this is the case when running on 3G or 3.5G due the lack of support until the device changes to GSM Reception this takes a while and so the device has no connection actually. Only solution to change settings to GSM only (of course stupid if you use Network for Browning, than there will no other solution then live with it) But this is not really a device issue then rather a Network issue though. Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
ok i just did a test, CorsixTH running, made a call to the phone with keyboard open, sure enough the phone call popped up, slid the keyboard down and answered in 5 seconds.
then i minimized corsix and started watching a video (with Corsix in the BG), repeated the test and recieved the call and answered (insluding switching from lscape to portrait) and it answered within 5 secs. You have a faulty device. |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
im not so sure on the 'worst phone in the world' tag. i have to say ive had plenty of phones with equal or worse functionality- the 'worst phone' gig sounds more like a bunch of spoilt ********* upset over some minimal function their phone cant do for them... simply because they paid so much for their n900 in the first place... having said that, if that missing function is something very basic thats included in most phones (of any price range), you might expect it to have been included since the N900 is hardly at the low budget end of the market... but no phone does everything thats required for everyone. yet!
if its not a genuine problem (ie its playing up/broken) then it looks like u simply bought the wrong phone or didnt look it up online to find out if your much wanted function was possible on the n900... of course, you could always look at the fact that its still a fairly NEW phone, so theres always the possibility that your missing phone function could be included in a future nokia update... perhaps even a third party could even offer better phone functions (?) installable through the phones internet abled application manager.... you never know (provided nokia allow that to happen of course)! if not, then make sure nokia at least know about your much wanted function-post about it on the general official n900 forums regarding wanted functions, or (better yet) email nokia to find out if itll ever be included. dont simply whine about how 'bad' the phone is in here! ;) |

you're such a fan boy :))) you've just prove that ignoring the fact that the first sentence there is "IT'S A PHONE" And honestly, when I buy a phone, I buy A PHONE (which implies USSD, sms, MMS, etc phone related) and I'm looking to see what else does it have. and wow, the n900 has also the capabilities of a mobile computer. BUT IT'S a PHONE at first. so stop being a fan boy and think ;) |

Also from what I've seen of the OP's responses, + the title and the tone of the opening post it makes me think trollish. Just want to add to the OT in regards to is the N900 mobile computer or mobile phone. I personally think that the phone app isn't really up to scratch if we compare it to current mobile phone functionality. The mobile computer functionality, especially with the involvement of the community covers a lot of what I consider to be a mobile computer. It lets me email, IM, browse web, ssh, espeak (yay) read ebooks, take notes, etc etc The still camera function is okay, and pretty good in the right environment after a bit of "hacking" *snigger* with a black pen. Video camera is blah blah.... Can you see my point? The N900 is a really flexible device, like a computer but mobile! If I list down all its functions, especially if I rank it at how well it does, then the phone app, due to its lack of functions is low down on the list. Hence the N900 is a mobile computer, with basic phone functionality based on what it actually can do! |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
Lol just when you think this forum can't get any worse you find threads like these. It's like a trainwreck I can't seem to help myself though, I get sucked in every time to see which are fanboys fanning the flames:p.
What I miss most about this forum is the positive attitude, there was a time when both complaints and praise was delivered in a level headed controlled manner. Instead 'chatty' threads like this are delivered in the most inflammatory way in order to garner thread views and people react emotionally to them. I wish there was a way to bring that era back when a simple 'Phone portion of my N900 is not operating to expectation' might possibly have been the thread title and the community would have stepped in to try and help the poster achieve expectations. Oh well... |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
The moral of the story is:
"He who use bad thread title will be f***ed by many d***heads" |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
haha... im wondering how these 'mobile or computer?' arguments are going to look in 10+ years time when every phone is faster than the latest average home desktop pc... :O
lets see :- i can phone and text i can install games i can install applications of practically any variety i can type out printable word documents/spreadsheets i can browse the internet result ?- a phone IS a computer ..but they always have been! regardless of whether they could do any of the above at all.. all phones have processors. theyve just never been fast enough until now to run the same applications as a laptop or desktop ;) sorry for stating the obvious, but its a pointless argument :P as to whether someone wants to regard it as a 'phone' first, or 'mobile computer' in first, nobody can be wrong. It depends entirely on the individual user and their main needs. nokia want people to regard it as a phone from their advertising as its the portable device thats designed to replace current mobile phones, since it can still call... and still fits in your pocket! ps everyone forgot about including the 'mobile camera' aspect, but then that just confuses matters, lol :) |

I disagree, if nokia included the "phone option" into the N900 then they should make it work as well as it works in any of the other "true" nokia-phones, even if it an internet tablet. PD: I love my N900, and besides few minor complaints I'm 100% confortable with it, but that kind of answers makes me angry... every time something phone-related with the N900 sucks people jump out of nowhere saying "is not a phone, it's not a phone" like if that gives Nokia free way to do any **** they want and no one can even think in complain about it, because "hey, it's not a phone mate"... well, but one of its functionalities is to make/receive freaking phone calls and it should do it RIGHT and instead of defending Nokia no matter what, we should analise the complains and somehow try to improve the device and make even better. |

If like me you brought it before it came out, then you took a gamble. If you didn't like the phone app then there are plenty of options to constructively help improve it rather then ragging on Nokia every chance. Nokia should have done this, Nokia should have done that doesn't help. Just the same as if I said to you, you should have waited until you were able to test it, or you should have researched it better. |

Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
well, if no one complains, Nokia would think "they love it the way it is, let's keep it like that" and that's not 100% true because there is a lot of room for improvement.
for me (and I'm ready for the hate mail) N900 is not a tablet, is not a phone... it's both... it's (it will sound like a Nokia advertise) a revolutionary device that stands over the thin line that divides "smart phones" from "internet tablets".. it's a middle ground. Is it too much to ask the device to, at least, try to be the best of both worlds? why people is most of the time like "if you want a phone, buy one, this is a tablet"... I know what I bought, I'm extremely happy with it, and, at the same time it's exciting to think what N900 could be if it reaches all of its potential in "both worlds", as an internet tablet and as a kick *** phone. |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
wow. I just read through the whole thread. And wow is the only word that can describe my feelings after reading this..
Now im not english. But a title like "i have the worst phone in the world", actually says " I have the worst phone in the world". Its not We have the worst phone in the world, or all of YOU have the worst phone in the world. How a statement like that can be provocative i really can not for the life of me see. If you click into the thread with that title, and you have a feeling that this is provocing you. Reading the actual Thread should rid you of that feeling. Cause the thread explains that this is his view of his device. Not that its a flame towards every N900 out there. And furthermore, no one should be put off buying the N900 after reading the thread, as its clearly ment for his device only.. A community should be about helping, suppurting and discussing subjects. So the starter of this thread is clearly looking for all of the above. But instead he is met with hostile comments like get the **** out of this forum, and by an iphone, sell you device etc. Now the answers should be something like: " you should probably let Nokia fix that for you" or " have you tried this or maybe this" or even " sorry that you have had such bad luck with your device, mine is working flawlessly in the points you mention". If someone else feels the urge to attack, please dont. Its not constructive at all. The thread points out issues, and he is expressing his feelings and meanigs toward the device and the issues. Nothing more. No harm done to the reputation of the N900. No need to become hostile or even threatning. Just my two cents...:) |

When someone does that I subconsciously get distracted by the motives of the poster. Are they trolling? Are they raging coz they didn't do a sensible purchase and want to blame someone else? Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
Come on guys. It's been marketed as both a Phone and a Computer.
Whilst the attention grabbing "I hate the Nokia N900" threads are pretty lame and annoying, so is the "it's not a phone it's a internet tablet" mantra that is chanted back. |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
I got your point... I probably got a little emotional, but as Kevven mentioned before, a lot of people in the thread simply attacked and insulted the author with the now classical "it's not a freaking phone, it's a tablet, get over it or sell it out" and I don't think that's the best way either.
Reffer him to other threads, give him tips... but not that. |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
I love my n900.
But, ...a little bit more work on it's phone capability would have gone a long way.... really... and it is... really... sold as a... phone a very clever phone but a phone |

I can confirm each of the five first issues off hand, and if you were not so hostile, you would do the same. It's really just five facets of the same one issue, as someone already mentioned in this thread. 1) If the CPU is at 100%, sound notifications is delayed, and the led will blink several long seconds before a sound is played. This is a known problem that I have seen in several threads here. I have experienced this numerous times. 2) If the CPU is at 100%, first notifications, then graphics, then button response will be delayed. A couple of seconds of each, and voice mail WILL kick in. I have experienced this myself a few times. 3) If the CPU is at 100%, changing screen orientation will take several seconds, sometimes even more. 4) If the CPU is at 100%, drawing up any program can take time and the screen may be left blank. When the phone rings, the phone GUI will be drawn up, and is dependent on free CPU cycles. 5) If the CPU is at 100%, the GUI will be sluggish. In addition to experiencing all of these problems on my N900, I have also experienced them or similar on each of my PCs with single core CPUs. How bad each of them is, depends on the OS design and priorities. I.e. will some OSs prioritize response to I/O a bit too low, and it stops reading the keyboard or mouse, while others may prioritize GUI a bit too low and you may experience graphical glitches. For what is clearly a communication centered device, the ability to reply to communication instantly should be a priority. When OP receive a phone call, other tasks like watching a video, should drop in priority. Much like a VOIP router will prioritize an incoming call over a bittorrent download, a communication device should prioritize communication over applications. Since it's a matter of priorities, someone has to code how priorities are set. If it was coded differently, the original poster would not have experienced these issues. His phone is not broken. He is merely experiencing the downsides of multitasking on a single core processor. Any of you would have seen that if you bothered to actually read what he said, instead of looking for attack angles. Kudos to whoever bothered to read the post enough to notice the original poster probably had CPU priority issues. There's actual advice that could have been given here, that might have helped him with his problems. The OP should check if any applet or process is using more CPU than it should be. I know I have read reports on some applets that drain the CPU and battery time. That's worth looking into. And one more thing, bashers. As I have "documented" earlier, the N900 is not a tablet. It is a mobile computer. If you're going to use that ridiculous excuse for every weakness in the N900 phone part, at least get that part right. |

Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
I remember qole saying that the n900 would be the cause of much infighting at Nokia. That's what this thread reminds me of: People that understand the n900, and people that don't. I really don't care how you think Nokia marketed this device, as a relative insider, it was so obvious to me that the n900 was going to be wrong for most people that weren't already Maemo heads.
This is the bleeding edge, some of you need to patch up and move on. Life is too short. |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
i agree wholeheartedly with OP.
having had an N800 for 3 years, i knew what i was getting into, and looked forward to the N900. people that say "do your homework" or "read up reviews" don't seem to understand, a lot of these nitpicks weren't unconvered in ANY reviews. phone call comes in, i tap on the green "pick up" button, sometimes i pick up the call, sometimes i don't. it's a crap shoot. if you have too many applications open, you don't get a ringtone when a call comes in (or when an SMS comes in). i mean, come on, these are bugs. |
Re: I Have the Worst Phone in the World
Maybe Nokia need to try out the Brain **** Scheduler.
Something definitely needs to be done to give more priority to UI updates and interaction as when something eats the CPU the UI becomes a complete dog. |

And for those who have suggested I return my device well it is not that simple. I live in the UK and had no idea when the N900 was coming out. I had been watching youtube videos of it obsessively from August. When it came out in the US I felt I couldn't wait till January or whenever for it to come out in the UK. It was the thanksgiving period in the US and wife and I were thinking of whether to go to the US for the thanksgiving sales. Well what tipped it in favour of going to the US was the possiblity of me getting the N900 early. If I want to return it I have to pay ridiculous courier charges to send it. Then Nokia have to send it back to me in the UK and that raises all sorts of Customs issues. I am also waiting for the new firmware update to see if it helps matters. As for those saying sell the device that is ridiculous advice on a number of levels. First, did I say anywhere that I was unhappy with the N900? I love Gpodder, the Conversations and most of all Conboy (my life has never been the same due to this wonderful app). Secondly, you are suggesting I sell my $625 device at a huge loss then cough up another $600 for a different device. Nice eh! Thirdly, I am always bragging to everyone how wonderful the N900 is. I of course never mention that I am missing half of my calls on the device. Would be too ashamed to tell those I have been boasting to that I had to sell the device and get something else. |

Welcome back etuoyo.
It seems like at the slightest provocation, trolls and fanboys swamp the threads with the most ******ed arguments. The "Is it a phone or computer?" argument was utterly unbelievable. Something at some point is going to be done - things cannot continue as the they are. Its also upsetting many long-time members of the board (who are thinking of leaving) - I say don't go and just give up, please stay. Hopefully persistent offenders will eventually get banned. |

What I do love about this 'phone' is the hardware is so nice and software so open you can literally do anything you want. I used to think performance was too slow, so I overclocked. I hated the transitions so I removed them, I wanted to sync google calender so I installed Erminig.... all of these are community solutions. I now have a near perfect device for my needs. I don't need maemo 6 or meego anymore. If you ask nicely around here using proper sentences in a calm manner people always help you out. When you don't well.... |
