processor gone nuts

yesterday i was using the internet on my break and left the browser open when i put the phone away for an hour in my locker at work,it normally looses signal in my locker..i came back to it and the battery had pretty much emptied itself and the phone was very slow.
when i got home i looked more closely, phone was much warmer than normal and looking at battery graph it show the processor at well over 50% solid.
also noted that virtual keyboard on sms doesnt work or if it does pop up then it lets me type one letter then the letter turns blue with the cursor the wrong side of it and the phone totally locks up requiring me to power it down,
have left it switched off but on charge all nite, still the same, removed the battery and still the same.have just left it off now.
now i am a complete noob at this phone though have had it for a few months and love it,i just have no exp at programming or flashing etc..
what can i do?
cheers!

Launch xterm (its in more folder), type top, look what takes most of cpu (p - sorts by cpu, m - sorts by memory, q - quits)

probably just 1-4 % of cpu and that's just normal. It handles GUI of your phone.

Re: processor gone nuts

ok processor seems to have dropped right down now since i took the sim out but it still completey locks up when i try to type an sms via virtual keyboard(qwerty pad works fine)...
top button gives the option to end task but it doesnt actually end it meaning i have to hold it down to power the phone off..
everything else appears to work normally.

Re: processor gone nuts

did you guys overclock the processor?

Rob1n 2010-04-15 08:31

Re: processor gone nuts

I'd suggest reflashing then.

stew-b 2010-04-15 08:39

Re: processor gone nuts

no i didnt overclock it,i think i will reflash it,ive read up on it and it seems preety straight forward.
its a uk vodafone n900 so i see a seperate firmware for that and i download the flasher to use on my XP netbook to be on the safeside??
can you confirm it wont wipe pictures/music sms messages??
thanks

stew-b 2010-04-15 08:43

Re: processor gone nuts

also sim card+memory card in or out during flashing or doesnt it matter?

If you're just reflashing the firmware then it won't wipe them. If you need to reflash the eMMC as well then it will. I'd suggest backing up everything you can before flashing just in case.

EDIT: Yes, just grab the Vodafone firmware (or the generic UK one) and the flasher program, then follow the instructions. As you say, it's pretty straightforward in most cases.

Re: processor gone nuts

Sim and memory card can stay in, though I might take out the memory card if I had super-valuable data on it, just to make myself feel totally secure.

You should run a backup before you flash.

I have never seen this "processor gone nuts" phenomenon, though I have seen it mentioned a few times lately. Flashing certainly should cure it, but I wonder if there is a common cause, or if it is just a sort of coincidence with several users describing phenomena in similar ways, making it seem like something unified that actually isn't :)

ok im stuck at the 1st bit lol,i have ZERO knowledge of DOS etc so need clearer instructions than this-

"Change directory to the flasher program
cd "c:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5"

how do i change a directory?? if i just type in what it says then it says cant find file path.....

Theres a slightly easier way of using Command Prompt so you don't have to CD to the Flasher Directory.

1. Copy the Command prompt from your accessories folder where it normally is, to the folder that the flasher is in (right click copy, right click paste).

2. Right click the Command prompt and click on Properties.

3. Delete '%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%' and click OK.

4. Now run the Command prompt and it will start in the flasher directory and you will not need to CD to it.

My other advise is to write the command in NotePad and make sure its OK and then to copy and paste it into Command Prompt.

And lastly, remember your phone has to be fully charged and off before you begin. When you are ready, hold down the 'U' button and then plug it into USB whilst the phone is off.

Do a backup, im pretty sure it will wipe everything off the phone.

cd = current directory

this line will change your commandline to the current directory to flasher-3.5 folder.

cd "c:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5

once you in the directory, you can just follow the next command by copy and paste it into the CMD.

follow the instruction and copy the line of commands one by one. Most importantly is to make sure you place the ".bin" file in the Flasher-3.5 folder and make sure the name is correct in the command. Otherwise fashing will fail.

That's the rather cryptic error message it gives when it can't find the firmware file. It looks like you're missing the ".bin" from the filename.

The other thing that can cause problems is the total directory + filename length (Windows has some limits for this), so try renaming the firmware file to something like OS.bin

slender 2010-04-15 18:17

Re: processor gone nuts

Hey,
You should probably try this:
- In command prompt first start to write flasher[TABULATOR]
- It should automatically fill it
- Continue writing with -F and RX-51[TABULATOR] and -f -R

Don't worry about it showing up as a VLC file - that just means that VLC has registered itself to handle .bin files (which only matters if you double click it). Did you try renaming it?

That's really weird. Can you post the output of running flasher this time, as well as the output from running "dir" in the cmd console.

Yeah to me it sounds like firmware file is not located in the same folder as flasher-3.5.exe

Re: processor gone nuts

What i do not get is that if you use tabulator as i advised then it should automatically fill the word to command prompt.

Bit like this:

Oops sorry didn't check the picture too closely, but anyways type dir and then enter in command line and get another screenshot. Or try what slender is suggesting, when typing RX and then pressing TAB on keyboard, it should automatically complete the filename

stew-b 2010-04-16 08:40

Re: processor gone nuts

here is the dir-

slender 2010-04-16 08:59

Re: processor gone nuts

heh. As you can see the filename extension is ".bin.bin" because you renamed it from explorer and you do not have "show file extension" on. What I asked you to do is use fricking tabulator that AUTOMATICALLY FILLS THE FILENAME. Sorry :|

.edit
So just try to flash but use this filename:
OS.bin.bin

..edit
And if that doesn't work then you can try to renam it in command prompt with following command:
rename OS.bin.bin OS.bin
And try now the flash program with that filename

Jaykie 2010-04-16 09:01

Re: processor gone nuts

Did you rename the firmware file to OS.bin.bin? :) I haven't used windows for a long time so i don't remember how it behaves when filename has 2 dots in it.

If you are certain that OS.bin.bin is the same file as RX... then the command should be:
flasher-3.5.exe -F OS.bin.bin -f -R

EDIT: Oops slender beat me :D

stew-b 2010-04-16 09:04

Re: processor gone nuts

renamed it again so it just shows as OS.bin, phone is flat now lol as i left it switched on last nite so will have to wait till its charged now... ive got the hang of the tabulator now thanks and read the wiki about it,this is all new to me im afraid but you guys are being EXTREMELY helpful :)
the last one i tried yesterday i put in the file name os.bin but now as we can see from the dir its called os.bin.bin so im fairly confident it will now work when i enter the correct file name!
thanks
will report back later....

Might be worth flashing the eMMC as well then (see the instructions - you'll need to reflash the firmware first, without the -R switch, then do the eMMC).

Make sure you back up anything in MyDocs first though.
