Re: Show off your screenshots
Continued Abuse of Thread for Anything a Screenshot Might Chance to Suggest:
Hey, I can't be the only one fed up with opaque title bars... Any of the theme gurus on here know right off if transparent titlebar is possible? If so, I can see a theme with fully transparent titlebar, as well as statusbar, and floating white iconify/close buttons. |
Re: Show off your screenshots
Yes, it's possible, I've tried it. You have to set the "shaped" option in theme.xml. However, it seems that each pixel can only have a transparency of 0% or 100%, no in between, semi-transparency. However...I dunno if matchbox is handling this incorrectly or what, but when you maximize any window to fullscreen, the transparency is applied to the contents of the window where the titlebar *would be* on the screen. So, it works, just not good enough if you want to use fullscreen apps. Also, the transparency won't disappear immediately when you change themes, you have to switch themes a couple of times.
If you want to try it out, edit a theme's titlebar to have some fully transparent parts. Then go to your theme.xml file and change Code:
<frame id="main" height="60" >Code:
<frame id="main" height="60" options="shaped">Now that I think about it, it may be possible to change only individual layers of the titlebar frame instead of the entire frame. This might get rid of the errors. I'm going to try that out later. Gaah, I uploaded just the titlebar but it was converted to jpg. Bah. |

Re: Show off your screenshots
Well, if you're wanting it for rotation specifically, it wouldnt be hard to make a quick theme just for rotation; it's only the titlebar image that needs to be tweaked. Unfortunately, you'd have to switch themes every time you rotated D:
|
Re: Show off your screenshots
Precisely, I said works with rotation, not with portrait; I swap a lot.
|
Re: Show off your screenshots
I tried some different stuff, and it didn't work unfortunately. I'm going to have to reflash again but I was actually half-expecting it. Hmmm...it looks like a bug will have to be filed to support this. I'll try and make a theme sometime this weekend that looks halfway decent rotated.

Re: Show off your screenshots
qwerty12, you've managed to make your desktop almost entirely unrecognizable to me! All these little desktop icons, like for control panels, and those little different-colored monitor icons, trash, looking like we have a purgatory for trash which I was unaware of, totally unrecognizable icons in the lower left, ...
ah-hah! looking up smplayer, which was also new to me, I think I see ... lots of KDE stuff going on here, eh? Man, how can we relate anymore, we aren't even using the same operating system! |

I really was only wanting what information you had off-hand, I'm content to wait till I'm booting from SD and risk crashing my own setup. (Of course, from SD, no need to reflash; just undo the change you did from the other boot...) Edit: The other option is to go with a flat-black opaque titlebar, and correspondingly opaque backgrounds for navigator and taskbar... That should be good for flipping, even if not as cool. |
Re: Show off your screenshots
Dont worry; im wanting to try and have this just as much as you, and experimenting is fun anyway. :D A solid background or a horizontal gradient background would work, though it may look a little square...

Um, that's cross-post, double-post is two posts in the same thread.
Either way, no problem. But where's the Miata? |

That reminds me... the last good word processor was WordPerfect 6.1 for DOS. Any chance of finding XYWrite or WP61 for Maemo? :)

Re: Show off your screenshots
I hadn't thought of that.
So did you really get Microsoft Word running? It doesn't look like VNC, but doesn't pass the "sniff test" since we all know that MS Word requires at least a Pentium 4 with 768MB of available RAM. :p |

I could probably find you an installation of Enable to try out... it's on 27 5.25" floppies, tho.... |

Hey, I don't have a mini disk drive, but I'd like to try it out. Can you copy it onto 8 inchers?

Sure. Let me see if I still have that old Shugart drive hanging around in a closet somewhere... Hey!! did anybody else notice that Tandy/Radio Shack no longer sells 8" media? hmph! |

 You two, with your UserFriendly avatars and your references to technology that was obsolete before some forum members were born... :p :D
|
Re: Show off your screenshots
I'm not sure; it may have been obsolete before I was born, but my dad brought some old stuff home that they'd just taken out of service (around 1990, I guess, when I was 6), and we tried (in vain) to connect the 8" drives up to an IBM interface, and then turned my sister and I loose on it.
We actually got good at the skills side of computer service quite young, soldering, desoldering, and mechanical work on the delicate mechanisms that tape-eaters and disk drives had back then. The soldering particularly came in handy when we built our YASBEC. :p |

yesterday I changed to the LCARS Theme Tabster commented on. For me everything works (N810, OS2008) and the only application using hardcoded black text is the standard RSS reader (which I don't use, I like Feedelity better). And WiFi strength is available via clicking on the 802.11 symbol. Maybe everything works now, as this is a newer version? Get it here: http://synthesize.us/LCARS_PADD?title=LCARS_PADD Apart from just the looks, the sounds are great and it's a whole different experience using the N810! Finally a usable LCARS implementation! Now my N810 is a real PADD - meaning the coolest device available at the moment. And together with the GPRS-all-data-transfer-inclusive-plan-for-10-Euro-monthly from my mobile provider the N810 is always online - just like a PADD. ;) Cheers Franko30 |

Re: Show off your screenshots
Did you replace the task navigator icon files with blank ones or remove them altogether (but the area where they *should* be is still clickable)?
I rather wish 'home''s drop-down menu would contain the task navigator options, too... . Nice clean look! |
Re: Show off your screenshots
They are just blanks. They still click normally ;)

Now, thanks to another thread about changing the startup screens, I found some in usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/ but swapping these out didn't change the left-side icon display. I rebooted a couple of times but no luck. BTW, I did search and tried to find the info in this thread, but it's running 40+ pages and I just couldn't find it in all that... |

HOW TO CHANGE THE TASK NAVIGATOR ICONS **This installation assumes you have a rooting application like 'becomeroot' already installed** 1. Open up a blank web page and enter the following: file:///usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/ 2. Scroll to find the name of the icon you want to replace. If you want to alter the actual icon image itself, hold down the pointer, the image will open in another page, 'Save as…' and save it to a convenient folder (I've only ever saved it to my Removable Memory Card. I don't know if it'll work as well anywhere else). 3. Transfer the saved image in the convenient folder over to your desktop. Once, on the desktop, make a copy as back-up (i.e. 'xxxx.png - original'). 4. Open up GIMP/PhotoShop/etc. and either create your own icon within a 48x48 pixel box (or find an icon online and reduce it to 48x48 in GIMP/PhotoShop) or open the icon image file with the unaltered file name and start altering. 5. When you're satisfied, save the image icon file - always with the same file name as the original icon image. DO NOT add '.png' at the end of the file name. For some strange reason, if the '.png' stays at the end at this step, when it gets back over to the Removable Memory card, the N800 is reading it essentially as 'xxxx.png.png' and that means it's no longer the same file name that is required to replace the original icon image file in the system. 6. Transfer the new icon image file over to the N800 and put it on the Removable Memory card. 7. Open File Manager and see if the icon image file is on the Removable Memory card. If '.png' appears in the file name, simply go up to the menu -> File -> Rename… and remove the '.png' from the file name. 8. Close File Manager 9. Open X Terminal 10. After the '~$', type the following: sudo gainroot 11. 'Root shell enabled' should pop up 12. Using the 'personal-menu.png' icon as an example, just follow the subsequent commands as shown below. The entire thing, from step #10 onwards, is shown as it appears on the screen. Caveat: unless there is a blank line between the commands below, assume it's because the long command is not appearing all on one line and there should be one blank space between the end of the first line and the continuation on the second line SO THAT THE LONG COMMAND LINE IS ALL ON A SINGLE LINE 13. The final command (the 'gtk-update-…') may take up to 30 seconds to produce the 'Cache file created successfully' message. Be patient :) 14. Once that message appears, simply reboot the N800. 15. Voila! The new icon should appear! ================================================ BusyBox v1.6.1 (2007-09-27 18:08:59 EEST) Built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. ~ $ sudo gainroot Root shell enabled BusyBox v1.6.1 (2007-09-27 18:08:59 EEST) Built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. /home/user # cd /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon # rm personal-menu.png /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon # cd /media/mmc1 /media/mmc1 # cp personal-menu.png /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon /media/mmc1 # cd /home/user /home/user # gtk-update-icon-cache -f -t /usr/share/icons/hicolor Cache file created successfully. /home/user # ========================== I've never had anyone else use the notes, though. Re: Show off your screenshots
You may want to note that for sudo gainroot, you need to have easyroot (www.nitapps.com) installed.
(Or becomeroot or RD mode enabled but I think easyroot is best imho) |
Re: Show off your screenshots

You don't *need* easyroot. Becomeroot works as well (and is what I've used). You, however, *prefer* easyroot. On an aside, I can't remember where the heck I even got becomeroot... . The Maemo Garage, perhaps? :o |
