If you have been careful and read all the text I had written in the configuration window, you would already know :)

But, never-mind :)

You have done your configuration now. Now the application is already running in the background and you can activate the configuration Window again by sending a message with the password you have configured. Default password is "Config".

Then In case you loose your phone, you can send a message to your phone to report you its position and bunch of other stuff. Based on what you have configured

Great work!

And what connection does it choose?

Edit: just tested it. Program tries to connect to each connection. Is it probably better to set default connection (for example, GPRS)? Does it check if phone is already connected to internet?

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Cool....I sent activating SMS, then I sent deactivating SMS. Now my phone connects every 15 minutes to network (repeat interval in settings). I uninstalled program, rebooted, but still every 15 minutes my phones connects to network.
Can anybody help? I don't want to reflash it now...

Edit: ha-ha)) I'm stupid. This program just changed connection settings of N900 to "Auto-connect" and "Prefer WLAN if available". I think it should be fixed..

On iPhone the same application is not free but expansive.
On N900, it the open-source phylosophie, but a little contribution as the means of each is possible.
The version 2 work greate.
Very good job, big thanks.

What I can suggest is to reinstall and edit the config. Uncheck the periodic update. I had more or less the same problem when I checked the periodic update and set a 5 min interval even if I sent the stop updating password it still sent every 5 mins.

Another little bug is that the password to uninstall does not work when checked. Just go to app man and uninstall and does not ask you for a password.
Brilliant app though something maybe Nokia can look at helping develop like they did with frals fmms.

Yes, It changes the connection settings:) I have already wrote about it.

Well, I can set the settings back, when reports are stopped to the previous state... I will inform when the update is available

rachol, I didn't read your changelog carefully. Sorry!
Yes, I think it should be changed to the previous state. At least while testing it is more convenient...

Under the checkbox I have stated with 2 lines long text, how to use it. I haven't figured out how to prompt user for a password while uninstalling application.

So once again:

If you don't select the checkbox in the configuration settings ( 2nd page )
you will not be allowed to uninstall the application.

You will have to activate config window again and select the checkbox. Now you are allowed to uninstall it.

Sorry I didn't try this program yet, but I'm following this thread very interested :)

Does it really set "Prefer WLAN if available"? I would not recommend that, as for example in my university there is an unsecured WLAN but you can only use it to connect to the internet with VPN. This WLAN is available in large parts of the city, so the email-part of this program would be useless within the range of this WLAN.
just a remark :)

edit: maybe its even better not to change the system-wide connection-settings. This program could just try to connect before sending an email. I would still prefer 3G/GPRS in this case.

rachol 2010-04-20 18:53

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Well, it doesn't

The only thing is does, it sets the "autoconnect" setting. It sets autoconnect to any connection. Then it chooses the connection based on connections stored on your phone and the order of those connection.

I would not like to mess around to much with user settings, not more than it's needed, so I am thinking to stick to what it does already. However, in the future it might be possible to implement a sloution, where user can set the connection preferneces.

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Anyone has encountered any problems?

Current issues:
*when it needs to send an e-mail or use network data for gps, currently also after installation and reboot it changes Settings-> internet connections ->autoconnect to "Any"

*the only way to activate config file, after it has been once configured is to send a message to the phone with config password.

Anyone encountered some other problems?

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Everything works fine for me but there is a small problem which could be solved. When the app works and I try to start browsing it connects me automatic. This is a problem for me because I use GPRS so sometimes I don't want to have extra costs and want to connect to WLAN.

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

I'm a bit stupid, I installed and configured the app before reading the entire thread! doh!
Anyway, the program isn't working for me, I'm guessing I configured it wrong, for example, my email address has a . dot in the part before the @ character and I saw someone further up in this thread said it caused problems, so this may be why I'm not getting any emails. I also did not check the auto-reply or fill in a phone number so I won't get any sms either. My real problem though is that when I send myself an sms with my config password, nothing happens except that I get an sms with my config password! No config screen. I don't know why I changed it from the default but I used 'activate_config' as my config password (activate_reports and deactivate_reports as my other passwords) and now I'm wondering if the _ underscore character is a problem like in the email address problem also mentioned in this thread? I'm pretty sure I'm using the correct password but I guess there is a chance I might have messed up and have it wrong... Or maybe I just don't understand properly how it's supposed to work?

Thanks for developing this app rachol, I'll be happy to pay for it when it is at a 'complete' stage!

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Really nice! Well done job!

Thanks a lot ... something noone should miss on his n900!

Dont know why, but in the email i just get black front.jpg - maybe i have overseen smthg?

Tonight i'll take a closer look at source, are there still parts not published? Is it the "keylogger"-part *g*

Consider for improvement:
- Maybe the Control-Messages should not show up in Messaging?
- Some sort of "Here i am" could really be interesting, for example if u forget your phone anywhere, maybe under the couch of a friend. For example with self recorded wav/mp3 "Hey, here is a n900 belonging to ...! My User is missing me maybe i got stolen so please return me!"

Yes, It is know, I have mentioned, that already few time, and temporary solution how to fix it:

After installing rebooting or start/stoping reports, you have to settings->interent connections->autoconnect from "Any" to whatever you wish.

I wil fix it in next update.

This project depends on gstreamer-tools, which has to be installed in order to receive correct pictures.

Installing applications from .deb files does not resolve dependencies, you have to do it on your own.

When the project finally gets to extras-devel, dependencies will be automatically resolved

WARNING

Please dont use "_" character for setting passwords. It is somehow not accepted, I will try to figure out the reason shortly

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

For testing purposes i have added to the first post an information how to restore default configuration .

When testing is done, and new fixed version will come to extras_devel it will not be possible to follow same instructions.

Hey,

great app !

I didn't get emails when there was a dot in my address. Removed it (thank you gmail for allowing this) and started receiving emails, after stopping and restarting reports.

Could it be possible to get IP and current SIM phone number in each email ?

I am available to translate the UI into french if you'd like.

Thanks, for the comment,

I have added this "." problem to known issues in the first post.

Translation? Well yes, I will contact you, when I am ready to add translations.

When it comes to SIM phone number, the information is not provided anywhere as far as I am concerned..., however having SMS option enabled, you will get it automatically.

OK, I think I know the problem. It happens from time to time depending on actual hardware it seems and based on luck.

I also know how to fix it, so I will make an update later at night, I would do it right now, but I have to rush to work for a while.

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Additional Info, just played around a bit

first i tried cam-image with healthcheck, black also :(

installed mirror

dependencies were

gstreamer0.10-plugins-good-extra, gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 libspeex1

mirror + healthcheck showed a image (within healthcheck it was green color only?)

tried activating imhere again, received image, but with size 0

[Edit] - had to reboot twice for non 0-sized pix, now i get green images like in healthcheck again, not useful. mirror-app works ok, backcam image is ok also.

I have just uploaded new version to extras-devel server, now have to wait untill it gets to extras-devel repositories. However if everything goes well new version fixing auto_connect issues will be available shortly. I have also improved the image quality.

I have done a lot of studies on camera hardware manipulation, but it seems that the front camera is very resistive :) The driver does not want to play with it nicely :) Moreover plugin for jpeg compression does not do the job well either.... it seems to be somewhat buggy. I was able to get a "very nice" looking video stream comparing to "mirror" application (btw. I can offer some help if new version of mirror app is coming), but capturing image is completely different story...
INSTALLATION

Old version is not compatible with new version, configuration files are located in different places, e-mail authentication has been changed, so FIRST UNINSTALL old version of application, BEFORE INSTALLING new version

Btw. You need to have uninstall checkbox selected to remove/uninstall/upgrade/update or whatever else :)

Fixes to known issues:
-auto_connect value is read before the reports are started, if needed the app will chang it to "Any" and after the auto_connection is not needed, it will reset the auto_connect to previous state. However, I am not disconnecting the connection automatically. You can use "Autodisconnect" application for that purpose.
-passwords with character like "_" or "£" did not work. They still don't, I have disabled possibility to use some of the characters.
- "." issue in the e-mail address couldn't be repeated by me, so I don't know if it still exxisting
-black pictures or 0 sized. I have increased to buffer number of frames coming from the camera before taking picture. It should help this problem. However as I have written before, the front camera hardware is quite bad, so if there is no sunlight, don't expect to see anything on the picture before the manipulation. I have actually found that using "auto fix" in default windows Vista image viewer can make miracles with totally black pictures :D

rachol 2010-04-23 01:16

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

IT IS AVAILABLE IN EXTRAS_DEVEL

UTILITIES -> "I am here"

That, means, you don't have to install anything extra anymore, all plugins will come togehter with one install click.

And remember, read what is written on the screen! :D

Edit: Anyone, who does not want to search for it in app manager can download it from my page, look at the signature...

HOOOOO -- RAY !!!!!! :D

Earlier in this thread someone suggested adding an additional feature for recording 30 seconds of audio from the microphone and including that as an additional email attachment. I'd like to cast a second vote for that feature.

rachol 2010-04-23 08:55

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

So, there are now few things considered for the implementation:

1. Add IP address to every e-mail
2. Add possiblity to use command line with SMS
3. Audio recording
4. Play a sound, for example, when phone is on silent mode.

More? :)

I will try to implement them, when again I will get some free days for maemo development, however I will be quite busy next 1-2 weeks
