Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

@Rachol :

If I use auto-reply, IMH doesn't consider SIM change, right?

Couldn't you anyway send email reports, and/or add an option which does auto-reply usually but falls back to a predefined number in case of a sim card change? Or the other way around : a number is set, but a command from another number overrides it and it goes to auto-reply?

My scenario :
I want to be able to use autoreply right after my phone is stolen, or if I loos it somewhere and have to use some friend's phone to find it.

But a thief will most likely ditch the sim card pretty fast, not allowing me to activate reports cause I don't know the new number.

It would then be good if the phone could send reports to my own number (operator deliver replaclement cards pretty quick, or at least mine does), or an other, as I wish, when

I don't know if I'm very clear... what do you think?

Another suggestion : the geolocation icon shows itself when the soft tries to get a location, it could draw unwanted attention from the thief. Could you hide it before locating, and restore it afterwards?

Powatool does this, it allows one to remove statusbar elements (the button in the statusbar menu as well as any associated icons)

Hi rachol, any suggestions on how I can uninstall the previous version I have installed? I can't access the config screen because of the _ in my config password (this post) and I can't uninstall it because it says 'Unable to uninstall' when I try - I guess I didn't check the uninstall config option. Any advice / help?
Thanks!

Great app mate.

Question.
Will the app still work if I have the autolock set?
So if a thief has it and reboots but can't access because they don't have the pin, will the sms still activate the app?

I have no idea if you have installed it, but in the configuration wizard it is stated that auto-reply does not consider sim card change. In that case the specified number is used.

The gps icon.... hmm good idea, I can implement that in future version.

Hi, I have also replied to you already in 2 of my posts:) Now is the third coming :)

Please... be careful and read every text you see in the Configuration Wizard. It will help you to avoid unexpected problems.

BELOW TEXT CONSIDERS THE OLD 0.2 VERSION:

APPLICATION HIDES THE CONFIGURATION FILE IN NOT USUAL PLACES. CURRENT VERSION'S CONFIGURATION FILE IS LOCATED IN NON STANDARD PLACE: /ETC/OMAPCAM/CM4397.ENC.

IF YOU ENCOUNTER PROBLEMS WITH CONFIGURATION AND YOUR APPLICATION DOES NOT FUNCTION AS EXPECTED OR YOU ENTER WRONG: NUMBER, EMAIL. OR YOUR PASSWORDS DONT WORK DELETE ABOVE FILE AND RESTART YOUR PHONE

No... It cannot activate the app, cause the autolock is started before anything else boots....

However, there is RS("Remote security") application, which allows you to set the lock/unlock code and activate/deactivate it with SMS

You can have both of them installed and it is up to you which application you prefer to use. Notice, that those application can both run in the background.

I have installed it and tested extensively, but what do you think of my suggestion to have a mix between default number and auto reply? Not everyone can have another number always available.

rachol 2010-04-23 11:33

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Ok, no problem.

Type your own phone number in the receiver and select "auto-reply", the mix already exists.

If you select "auto-reply" you get messages on the phone you sent the start report message from. However in case of SIM change, the receiver's phone number will be used.

If you don't select auto-reply, reports will always go to receiver's phone number.

I think it is exactly the way you want...

Where is the source code?
Noticed, you have released it, but could not find.

rachol 2010-04-23 11:48

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

I had a small problem, with last release of source code:) I have forgotten to remove a password to the gmail account used for this project :D Therefore, the "Maintance break" I had to change the password when I noticed and remove it from garage:)

There was another issue. My files didn't contain proper header with licence agreements. I have to read more on that and decide what licence I am going to use.

I cannot release at least 1 cpp file, which includes the password encoding stuff and so on...

There are couple of issues I have to solve before releasing.

I have rushed too much before :)

I cannot get the email reporting to work. Can you tell me how does the application determine what smtp server to use? Does it pick it up from the configured mail accounts?

No, it uses predifined e-mail account created for this aapplication, I have just tested it and it works.

The account might be considered as spam? I will contact admins of the e-mail provider to solve the issue if it was considered as a spam.
However I have just tested it and it worked for me. Try with different e-mail account.

Edit: When I get enough of time I will ad an option of choosing your mail settings instead.

Hmm... I have flashed my phone to check if the installation goes well and it worked with all maemo repositories enabled.

Try to install it manually with:

dpkg -i name_of_the_package

thanks rachol

if your having issues with email services reports mails as spam (probably because your using a free service to do it) id be willing to offer up soem email hosting for this, i have my own servers so spam shouldnt be so much of an issue

rachol 2010-04-23 16:00

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Hi,

I have found the problem. Number of sent Mails has exceeded 500 :)

@dj_steve

do you think your server could handle something like 2000 e-mails a day? Since this app has just started, i bet it might become more popular soon and people will start testing, specially when I improve somethign again :)

Let's say that currently it was sent 500 e-mails in about 5 hours, so 100 e-mail in 1 hour with attachments in average 20kb is actually only 2MB/hour, could you handle it on your server?

dj_steve 2010-04-23 16:01

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

im sure one of me servers could handle it (got 3 at min one of which is pretty much idle

I think you have to have some conflict with packages already installed, however I have no idea what could be the solution.

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Thanks to dj_steve !!!!!!!!!!

We have new e-mail account in use, no limits on amount of e-mails sent a day. Thanks to dj_steve, beside new e-mail account, almost dedicated server we have got a new domain imhere24.com !!

There are few plans how to improve the application and integrate it with web-services, but for now:

PLEASE UNINSTALL OLD VERSION OF THE APPLICATION

WHEN DONE, INSTALL IT AGAIN FROM REPOS

I am sorry for the inconvenience of uninstalling and installing the app again, but I had a reason.....

Anyway.... ENJOY!!

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Hi,

I have one of the 1st versions you released, which I installed using a deb file.
I want to uninstall it and install from repositories but I cannot find how to Uninstall the application.

Right now, I have the "Config" , "Activate" , "Deactivate" passwords configured and working. I can access the configuration wizard easily, but there is no option for uninstall password there.
When I try to unistall from app manager it fails (obviously).
Help me out here please.
How do I uninstall this thing???

Thanks.
Eitam.

Hmm, it would help me to know, which version exactly...

Can you set separate passwords for Mail and SMS?
Do you have battery settings window?

I can separate Mail and SMS,
I have setting for low battery yes.
It still asks for an internet connection when I activate it. (if that helps)

Just a side note, Maybe this is intentional but I couldn't find Uninstall instructions anywhere in this Thread or talk.maemo at all :)

Aaah then if you are using SMTP that explains it - a lot of service providers these days are blocking port 25 outside of their network - mine does this so I need to use SSL to connect to outside SMTP servers. I think the only way you are going to get email to work correctly is to pick it out of the email apps settings - that way everyone can configure it according to their network.

Even your new email hosting solution will have problems because of the SMTP port block mentioned above.
