iphone 3GS with same hardware as N900 can record video at resolution 1080x800 @ 30fps .Why N900 can not do this?

I doubt it's the same hardware. iPhone most likely has a better sensor than N900, and then it's a hardware limitation, not software one.

apparantly, the SoC's of the N900 and the iPhone 3GS are very much alike - but there might be some major differences with the DSP's.

the N900 should still be able to handle 720p by using a lightweight encoder (=probably not h.264).

Samsung i8910 handles 720p with the exact same SoC as the N900.


the camera sensor should not be of concern as the N900's sensor handles 5 MP - more than enough for 720p
