Hello Everyone,

If this is an easy question or has been asked before I apologize in advance.

Does anyone know of an application or something which handels Images better than the built in Photo Viewer?

By better I mean in terms of looking for an image either by searching or a way to limit the results. I know the built in photo application has date, name and meta however I know the name or very close to it and the only way to navigate to it is either via flicking 3000 times or using x-term to grep and open what I need. There is also the file manager however I find that to be very slow when opening a large number of files.

I store about 4000 images with me for various purposes and hate flicking my way through them to find a hand full of images. Any information or suggestions (other then deleting most of them) are appreciated.

I am not aware of a good photo viewer (have not been lookin).. Maybe organize them to different folders would solve your problems?

That isn't a bad idea, the only issue is I wouldn't gain any benefit from the Photo Application unless I change how the tracker looks for items. Possible but a real pain. I would be able to then look per folder and reduce my search that way.

As mentioned in my OP that is an option however when opening 4000+ images it takes a long time, granted no better in the Photo App however at least there I gain a preview of the file.

Sounds like I may try AIMehdi's idea unless I see someone else with a better solution :)

hmmm I see what you mean, im sure I've seen a gimp app somewhere...

Maybe I dreamt it up... I'v just had a look and I cant seem to find it though.

Perhaps in the next firmware update you'll be able to type in the first letter of the file in file browser and search like that...

Sorry it was the Debian package installer that allows one to run Gimp...

GIMP is available on EasyDebian, there is no native N900 version.

I will just find a solution and limp along until either something comes out via firmware / extras or I get off my lazy but and program something haha.

You can set the Photo Viewer to only show specific directories (see the "Filter by Folder" menu option). Unfortunately it doesn't persist between sessions though.

Hmm
I was thinking of a photo viewer as my next little Python Qt application, as it scratches a personal itch. Tracker already indexes everything, so that might be a route to go down.

I would be interested in what other features people would be looking for.

any one using Canola? I used that on N8XX and it did some of this plus flicker intergration

I know a few things that I would personally like;
*A way to index or save image views. So that when you are looking for a certain "group" of images you can click and it filters everything. The N900 Photo app should do this however I have never got it to work properly much like the meta tag information.

*Searchable! I don't understand why this was never thought about with the default photo application. As it stands now I have to grep from the xterm on what I am looking for.

*Shortcut via text input. Being able to start the file name and have predictive text bring up a list of images which fall under that category or name.

I started a small python QT app myself last night after thinking about this. I know python well enough however I am very green when it comes to QT. If I get anything working half decent I will let you all know otherwise I will keep an eye out for alternatives.

It's pretty clear that the Photo application was never meant for large collections but neither was the built in media / music player in my opinion.

thats great on the app side. look forward to seeing first cut. feel free to ask about Qt.

There is probably a reason why there is no search in any of the N900 apps. The plan I believe is that there should be a system wide search. maemo and meego will be using tracker. At time of release Tracker was not quite ready.
