Yes, I generally agree about that simplified assessment... but I can't help but notice that not many people here realize that the real battles are won when you can woo significant (numbers and quality of) developers and customers out there.

I think the 'lock down' aspect of their ecosystem is overblown. Most apps have export/sync function to dump the data to some web service somewhere. Those that don't, well it's early enough in the game that people can avoid them. As for the platform itself, I think most people I know replaces their phone once a year or at most two. This leads to a constant need for Apple (and everyone else in this business) to raise the bar on every iteration or they risk losing customers. We're not re-entering MS domination era here, imho.

Also, this isn't just about users awareness. Look at how many users in this forum that are aware (and supports) the OSS camp, yet they swerve from purchasing and using the N900 due to many reasons.

well i've never tried an iphone properly yet because even the idea of having them tie me down scares me off! connect your phone to itunes before it will work? no thanks.

they can attract the big developers so well because the big companies WANT everything tied down, its the DRM battle all over again, like it or not developers just as record companies dont always want whats in the best interest of consumers, its up to us to convince them, but the phone market has the apple masses flocking to them and more and more people getting used to, and happy with, less and less control over their own devices and installed software.

its such a pity ovi store blew it so dramatically, i know if i was head of a large developer i wouldn't invest a lot of time and money in maemo right now.

I think we're on a one-way ID-fest. Palm and Android have their own registration schemes too. I had to login to my google account on my G1 too before the phone would start. Get used to that...

Does consumers always want what's in the best interest of the content creators too? Will they protect each other's interest? If not for the rampant piracy scene, we wouldn't be in this DRM mess.

Anyway, no one is being forced to do anything they don't want here. The developers can choose which platforms to support, the customers can choose which platform to support, the platform providers can choose how to design operate and market their own marketplace.

OSS is great for infrastructure stuffs (ip stacks, backend utilities, services daemons, etc) but when it comes down to catering to the real end users; the incentive system and motivations just aren't aligned. If maemo is so great... why... are we here?
I'm not selling my N900 yet, but I'm not holding my breath for Meego either.

i don't want to get used to that, that's my whole point, i know other companies are doing so now but they're just following apples wagon, and people are accepting it. apple leads the way and the sheep follow on. it makes me sad. :(

You dont *have* to connect the iphone to itunes before it will work, you can get it working without doing that by phoning them up

Not everyone has a computer or internet (yet)

OR somebody comes up with a hardware emulator for ARM devices...then it would be no different to running Windows in a VM (or older versions of Windows on DOSbox).

Re: iphone emulator on N900?

There's a ton of those, there's one running Maemo over VM, that's how people develop for N900 without owning a device. There's an issue emulating hardware, but someone could (and did) write an emulation driver that feeds standard data for whatever platform you like.

Problem is, if it's not running over a powerful PC (as you suggested) you can't emulate, you have to run ON the CPU. VMWare does that, but it's gonna be tough if the OS doesn't support your screen size. There's no horsepower available to scale. It does work on Android, though, there's a Youtube video demonstrating Maemo and Android parallel running in an n800.

You still don't have the license to run the said OS, much like installing a Windows in a VM still needs to be licensed. Also, no hardware since the specs are closed.

Re: iphone emulator on N900?

Does anyone know if it's possible to run iPhoneOS on XenARM at all?

It would be really cool to get iPhoneOS running on Maemo. I can't think of any iPhone apps I want right now, but it would give us ULTIMATE PWNAGE over the iPhone users!

cmon, think of the real repercussion of that!

other companies will probably steer off registration systems or think of a better implementation (that's hopefully less annoying) rather than pay the apple tax...

Yeah I think Apple's iPhoneOS is the first totally locked-down software ecosystem, unless you count gaming consoles...

Re: iphone emulator for N900?

what an awesome thread! I also want an iphone emu, dosbox on the n900 doesn't run mechwarrior 2, there's no ps3 emulation and as the OP says there just arent enough apps on the n900! Whats the point of having a phone if you can't pretend to drink a pint of beer with it?!?!?!

ScummVM, picodrive, snes & nes emu's, quake 3, They're are all pointless if i can't use itunes to sync my music!

Honestly, why don't all phones use itunes? It's just not right this "plug in and copy music to device" business! People should be forced to spend at least 2 hours trying to sync there music only to find itunes has deleted all there songs and crashed bot at the same time, thats how technology should work!!!!

Nah, Danger was doing this with the old Sidekicks long before Apple came on to the scene. Apple just made it popular (as they are now known for).
