Is this possible? Dial Up ISP to N800
 

So I have a Motorola L6 as my cell phone and today my friend said he has used his cell phone to connect to NetZero using the cell phone as a modem and it sends internet data via bluetooth to his laptop. Since my school offers free dialup internet I tried to set it up between my phone and N800 and I get to the point that my phone gets a message if it wants to use the dialup gateway and starts dialing the number but gets disconnected right away. Is it really possible to connect via dial up internet through the cell phone.

I don't know which carrier you have, but Verizon Wireless has their phones locked to their data network; no outside ISPs allowed. After all, they have to charge you for the data, don't they?

I use Cingular but I don't see how they would lock it. Wouldn't it just be using my minutes and using the phone as like a 56k modem.

It is possible to connect to an ISP using dialup. It just depends on your cell phone and having the right settings. Contrary to the above post, I have connected to my ISP using a Verizon Wireless phone. The dialup over the cell phone is approximately equal to 14.4k modem, so it's not very fast. (The direct connection through Verizon Wireless on their 1X network is much faster.)

i had cingular. Cingular does block analog carrier signals (fax, data) on most accounts. The speed will be very slow anyways. 9600 bps!!! or 9.6 kbps.

I have connected to my ISP using a Prepaid Wireless phone as data call . It is it works good just that it is very slow . 14.4 it's like being in 1981 on a bbs :) .

But it aleast works .

I have callplus wireless prepaid it works off verizon network and works with any verizon phone . better prices than verizon prepaid as verizon will hit you with a day fee for each day you use the phone . Not the case with this service and you are still on verizon even if you call 611 it is verzion and a verizon nimber . http://ecallplus.com/cellular/locus-cdma.html


I have also tried to use 1x network but it I just can't seem to get it to connect . I will have to do more testing on that with this prepaid service .

I am useing my roadrunner backup dialup account for my isp.

The phone is an ebay deal i got for $4.99 A V710 this phone works great at DUN is already turned out of the box.

Hope this helps others that may have prepaid servies and just needs to check the email real fast or lookup something.

My N810 is able to connect but then fails, likely during negotiation. ComputerFreak, can you post how you got this to work with roadrunner?

is not mobile but it is a true 56 k modem over bluetooth.

I've used one for a short period time and it's a solid performer.

I dial up to a regular dialup ISP via a Verizon phone using my n800. It's pretty painfully slow, but it's better than nothing, and is totally free (the ISP is free, so it's just like making a phonecall), except for minutes when applicable.

I've never been able to do the 1x DUN thing with my verizon phone (presumably because I don't pay for any sort of data, tethered or not), though maybe I could if I got vCast or mobile web, but at this point the extra money's not worth it.

If you're willing to go with 9.6 or 14.4 kb/s over a phone call, you might consider the whole iDEN/Boost mobile deal; I'll outline it, but check some posts by YoDude, the pioneer of this for the ITs, for details.

Buy a Motorola iDEN phone with BT off eBay, about $40-50.
Buy a Boost Mobile prepaid SIM for it. (To keep it active, fill up with $20 every 3 months, minimum.)
Tether the N8x0 to the phone, get free 19.2 kb/s always-on (does not count against minutes) internet connection. Use or do not use the voice plan, as you see fit.

It's an extra phone to carry, if you use your existing phone for phone usage, and the iDEN as a modem only, but it's only ~$7 a month, and gets you twice or 1.5 times as fast as the dial-up route. No worrying about minutes (if your plan is limited), and the ability to simultaneously do data and voice. Also no trouble from Cingular, if nicetiga's information is correct.

Is anybody having any luck now using a dial up ISP (like roadrunner backup dialup) with a verizon phone? Verizon recently enabled security that has blocked their "free" 1x access. I am trying to connect to my rr dial up, but I always get "connection failed" after about 2 minutes of trying to negotiate the connection.

I know this is painfully slow to use, but I rarely use such a service anyway, so I'd like to get it working for "emergencies"

I can get a used nextel/moto i605 for about $50 from ebay, but am not sure if it would be a good investment. Since it is a discontinued product, it might be difficult to have it serviced. Can someone confirm that newer/current nexel/moto phones with bluetooth are compatible with n800 and boost mobile?
