Purely speculative, but the most obvious reason for me would be that the update bricks your device - not much of an issue if you start from zero (or it is preinstalled), but would be a kind of downer for like most existing users. There could be many other reasons (regulatory/legal/etc) so, especially considering the experience with the UK firmware, selective availability of firmwares is not exactly unheard of.

Also, they need to hurry up and shuffle that PenPower package over to the non-free catalog or to the Nokia repositories instead of the free catalog.
Which package are we talking about, precisely ?

For the record, the N900 has a little over 300 apps that have been cleared by community or Nokia’s QA, and over 3000 with community apps that are in various stages of development, plus an unknown amount of commercial apps (known to exist from announcements or YT demos). Note that these numbers are not directly comparable to other platforms as we have full blown browsers and not site-specific apps, platform-emulators instead of single games, etc.

"over 3000 with community apps that are in various stages of development"

Only 5 applications have EVER actually come out of community brainstorm in 6 months - I assume this is where you got the 3000 figure from.

You assume wrong. The figure comes from a combination of repositories, most notably extras-devel, which alone sports 3234 unique, community maintained packages.

Well, not all are apps - most are libs, thus invisible to the user.

Even with ungrepping libs it’s well over 2000 just for extras-devel. But as said, it’s difficult to pour package data into app numbers. For example, Easy Debian (with it’s N thousand packages) counts as ONE application. Now compare that with one app on, say, the iPhone that just acts as a custom RSS reader or web front-end for www.foo.com

@ Benny

Many of the thing you say are right, I must admit the great majority. But you have a tone and a way to say them that is always so sarcastic and arrogant that, given the validity of your statement, I really do not understand!

Just curious, not about to start a war or anything.
But I really fail to see arrogance in Bennys post, its a simple question. Did I miss anything?

I'm certain you mean well - as you always do in your postings here, right? - but: I know that. I've always been like that, in both in real life and on the internet, and I do not intend to change that. I'm just too old now, you know.

The update your all striving to get will be of no use to you at all as it is all in chinese ! so unless you want a chinese desktop and everything else in chinese and you can read chinese fluent , dont bother.

This is one report of the press conference in Hong Kong for the release of the N900 here. Unfortunately it's only in Chinese. See the first video on that page - you can see the "More" icon is gone.

haha it is great to be hack is not it? After all N900 was meant to be for geeks use and geeks hack stuff.. So this implying that the device is meant to be hack! But i can't wait one more day without this awesome update though. I'm still helping testing uKeyboard but can't test this new one to find the problem for Ronan yet.

Re: Nokia N900 will be officially launched in Hong Kong on May 5th - with PR1.2 & extra goodies!

I see everyone is looking forward to this for firmware and software reasons but for me i hope it takes off so Hardware and N900 parts become cheap !

Keyboards, screens, outer shell these items have always been mass produced, copied and re-made in HK when a phone has hit there markets which for me means... i can replace and keep my n900 going for a reasonable price using fleabay instead of specialist nokia sites that from what i have seen so far want £80 for a front screen.

If the phone takes off when released over there it can only mean good news for us here.

Re: Nokia 1.2 HK version

Hmm.. I am wandering what will happen when the guy who bought this device and then he start installing software from extra-devel and brick his device on the same day.. How is he going to reflashing his device?
If there is the official V10.2010.12-9 is not even online yet!!

Is this what Nokia think that the asian people in Hong Kong doesn't know how to access Extra-Devel?

Built Ovi Maps 3.0, support for GPS, A-GPS satellite navigation
OpenGL ES 2.0 support
Rotary gesture to support the operation equipped with Mozilla Maemo Browser
It's just a typo i think. At best there could have been maybe some Qt based Ovi maps, but that would not be the already relased Ovi Maps 3.0.
