help with - kernel power -

i need help with - kernel power -
i installed it by mistake and i dont understand anything about it
what is it doing exactly to my device?
i know it will increase the processor speed and other stuff but i really dont want that as i read before that doing so might fry my N900
and i cant have that as it took me ages to be able to buy one
i tried using that uninstall code and it asked me if im root
what is root?

Re: help with - kernel power -

If you haven't reflashed your kernel then it won't do anything major, don't worry.

It can't overclock your phone on its own.

root is admin in windows, ie the user thats allowed to install software and do a lot of other things.

You'll need to install rootsh if you want to get to root.

you don't have a problem, trust me. Plus if you ever do fancy overclocking 800 mhz creates only a few degrees more heat than stock speed, which is harmless as long as you don't run something that creates 100% cpu use continuousely.

Re: help with - kernel power -

if you've installed rootsh by now, in an xterm window type:

sudo gainroot

then you are logged in as root.... be careful, now you can break things

Re: help with - kernel power -

zarf thanks for your help
what exactly do u mean by break things?
all i need is to uninstall it
how can i unroot myself after that? if it is possible...

Re: help with - kernel power -

I mean you'll have access to delete things that could stop the phone working until you performed a usb reflash of the device.

you're perfectly safe doing the uninstall.

once you close the xterm window you don't go back to being root until you type sudo gainroot again.

sudo gainroot = log me in as root

Re: help with - kernel power -

until you become root, you could wildly delete almost any fiile you liked and the phone would still work, but root has permission to change essential parts of linux

Keep doing what you are, when you can operate it, look into developing if you want.

read as many articles in the forum as you have time for, they're educational.

anyone publishing a maemo for dummies book ? I want a copy if they do

Re: help with - kernel power -

will do so... i love my N900
pretty amazing...great potentials!

Re: help with - kernel power -

I've installed the kernel-power-setting and now the HealthCheck show's me frequencies from 125MHz to 1150MHz, but I haven't installed a custom firmware. Does this means that I can change the cpu freq without flashing the device with one of those custom firmwares?
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm kind of a rookie in maemo, but I love the n900.

Bakuur: You should really take a look on this http://wiki.maemo.org/Overclocking and other wiki pages.

And especially the Reverting to the Original Kernel part.. If you have installel rootsh and go to the terminal (ctrl+shift+x) and write:
Code:

root
and
Code:

apt-get install --reinstall kernel kernel-flasher
(press enter key after the commands)

You will be back to normal. ;)

No it wont do anything to your device. if you check below in the HealthCheack you will find that the proccesor speed is 600MHz
as i understand i think you should flash it in order to get higher speeds

Re: help with - kernel power -

Tried to reinstall install the original kernel using the command above but get the error message:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state infomation... Done
Reinstallation of kernel is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
Reinstallation of kernel-flasher is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.

I am connected to my network :) before anyone asks, and I can access application manager (and download/install stuff), so are the files missing from the repo or something????

Any thoughts?

zarf 2010-05-22 08:46

Re: help with - kernel power -

Do you have the right repos enabled?

moepda 2010-05-22 08:57

Re: help with - kernel power -

are you on leaked pr1.2 ? if so cant download stock kernel as not officially released yet... extract from 1.2 bin file only option though how to do that not a clue sorry...

davedickson 2010-05-22 10:44

Re: help with - kernel power -

Using 1.1, which repos do we need to have enabled? I haven't got dev or testing enabled but I didn't think it would be there? Is it?? :)

you are right, kernel-power is in extras too, and the command you runned should revert the installation.

i dont know what is wrong yet, but someone will

Well not really worried about it now because I realised you can just use the "default" setting so that the device is not being overclocked, thats all I was really concerned about.

I just wanted to play around with the overclocking, to see what affect it had etc and then go back to the standard setup, completely forgot about the default setting config when I had finished playing :D

So with the default setting I will just use the new kernel, because its going to come in handy for other things in the future :D nice work btw guys

But it would be nice to know why that command didn't work??? Just for other people or future use???
