If Application Manager says "No space on device", how do you suppose that apt-get should be able to do anything like installing? apt-get needs to store it's files somewhere too, just like the Application Manager.

One way to make room for installing tools to fix this is to, in the XTerminal as root, do the following:
Now you'll see all the Debian packages that have been downloaded and, potentially, installed. Remove the ones you don't think you'll need to be able to reinstall from disk later on:
After removing enough of these files, you can install the tools suggested above. It's also a good time to use the Uninstall feature of the Application Manager and uninstall the applications you haven't used in a while.

I guess, you don't have rootsh installed.

Can you post the screeshot here ?
also try to disable the other two repositories if you have them enabled.

Hi all,

Like the original poster, my N900 won't let me download apps/firmware. I have been using my N900 very conservatively (meaning I only use/download from Nokia, Ovi, and Extras repositories). Have not messed around on Xterminal until today. I installed Rootsh, then went to Xterminal and typed:

sudo gainroot (enter)
apt-get install pymaemo-optify (enter)
apt-get clean (enter)

but my rootfs has not changed.

According to the df -h command I get:

rootfs Available: 34.1M Use: 85%

So what do I need to do now to increase my rootfs so that I can download the firmware from Feb 2010 (PR1.1.1). Would like the safest yet effective way to do this if possible. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not Linux knowledgeable, so pretty much a noob.

Also, thought this was weird, I uninstalled apps (like 50MBs worth) yet my rootfs hasn't increased, pretty much remained the same.

Disable extras. Leave only the Nokia repos active and you'll free some ~18MB of space. For a bit more, do this then restart your device.

only removing non optified apps will clear up space in rootfs, since ur not using testing or devel most of ur apps will be optified.
check out the wiki but be careful and dont use any scripts you dont understand they can be realy harmful

Ok, I disabled Extras repo, and rebooted (switched off/on) and now I get:

rootfs Available: 36.1M Use: 84%. Doesn't seem to improve my rootfs much. What else can I do, thoughts?

I'm assuming you disabled it through the Application Manager, and it still had no effect?

Otherwise, check /var/cache/apt/ and see if there's anything hiding in there.

As you are struggling to free up more space in your rootfs i strongly suggest you flash the leaked fw as it will more than double the amount of free rootfs as proven by everyone who has installed this fw.
Probem being a very badly written os in the first place on pr1.1.

I had the same problem, I tried freeing rootfs space to no avail.

For me, I had used easy-debian and as it turned out many things in my home directory were now owned by root.

By running this as the root user it may fix your problem:

chown -R user: /home/user/.

Thanks to all who helped.

But I was not able to solve my problem, and didn't want to venture in "advanced" Xterminal exploration since I have no idea of Linux. So I just downloaded the Nokia Software Updater and did a firmware update through that method. Although I had to re-install all the apps I had beforehand, but at least it was the safer route for me. Now I am on PR1.1.1. Hopefully I won't have to do this all over again when PR 1.2 comes out...what a pain!.
