A lot of us 'common people' are also early adopters and happy end users of the '900...and I have no problem with using my '900...would I recommend it to my friends? Probably, but with the caveat that it is a little more advanced/developed than the average mobile.

I'd fire any sales person who didn't explain issues objectively. That includes pointing out pros AND cons without emotional interjection.

And I don't care who provides the solution to a need. But then, I'm not opposed to the community involvement aspect of this experience as some are.

Perhaps he was referring to the fact that none of the standard Nokia software that comes on the phone doesn't use the IR port at all. As far as I know. FWIW I don't think IR port is ever mentioned in official nokia specs for the N900, so its presence is more of a bonus feature than a missing one. :)

The sales guy should spin it into something like "It even comes with a ... shhhh... don't tell anyone, but a hidden FM radio and IR port. You need to get a secret program online to unlock them... I normally don't tell people this, but you look like the kind of person who is into having some special features like that"

Wasn't the IR port only added because it came with one of the chips Nokia was already putting inside the N900?

That song somehow came to my mind also and thats why I used it above :) (although the meaning is not quite right for that point)

I work in sales selling mobiles and operator contracts that go with them.

Texrat's made a few great points about how people should sell the N900 or any other device for that matter. There's no room for fanboys in sales for these devices, just like there's no room for haters. You can never say that a device is just terrible, end of story, this is the objective truth. The N900 has its audience and so do other phones. It's a measure of the sales person to give an honest description of the device.

I share everyone's fustrations about the N900 as well as other Nokia devices. But about 99% of the things people whine about on this forum for example, make no difference to your average user.

So sometimes selling these devices is really a balancing act with my personal opinions, the cold facts and my take on the general view or what I understand to be the expectations of the customers to be. It can be quite hard when you're an enthusiast like me! :)

The Problem is that the Seller could have his information right from this Forum becouse what he said is the official statement here too:

The N900 is a Step 4 before Step 5 , experimental , primary a mid not a phone .. this are cold facts right?

I didnt feel that it was strictly true tho as the ir port does work. Applications just needed to be written to utalise the ir port. The way he made it sound to me is that it could never work because of a design floor. Which is what he was basicaly trying to say about the whole phone.
