Awesome, thanks for the link. Big fan of 3D so here's hoping this is going to lead to something special.

ooooh jfk, you have been busy! I'd love to try a working tech demo of this like you had for your face detection!

Wow... That's amazing. I hope something practical comes out of it.

We also got that guy which made the burgerface game and that was it, no news about that...

This demo is in repositories. See thread Games

No, this demo isn't in the repositories. Do you mean BurgerFace, a game that I made and that's also based on head tracking? If so, that isn't in the repos either, but there is playable demo in my blog.

sorry but there's a thread not a repos ;)

awesome job!

I really hope someone will use this technique to make real (commercial?) games! :)

keep up the good work jfk!

Awesome! Great job, jfk!

Does the camera track your face all the time? Does it work in low light? It is perhaps simpler to wear a little light (or two) that the camera can track...

Well, both things were done by me. So you might see this video as news on BurgerFace, too. ;)

Yes, the camera tracks your face as long as you are in the field of vision of the camera. It doesn't work that well in low light conditions, but that is also due to the camera's poor quality. For example, the back camera produces much better images in low light.
You could use little lights, but that would undermine the idea of "working out of the box". You would need the light(s) and a power source, both of which you normally don't carry around and probably would have to be custom-made. Additionally, the tracking could then get distracted by similar light sources.

Good work jfk :)

Have you had any ideas of creating a head tracking library or package that others could easily import into their projects that would enable them to make use of these algorithms? That would be pretty cool :)

Great work jfk,

Thanks for the link to the use of this effect in the DSi game - that really shows the potential.

And thinking more about it - the DSi one shows how the accelerometer could be used to great effect instead of head tracking.

I agree, that would be pretty cool. But, I haven't really considered that yet. I'm not sure yet if I can or want to publish my implementation as Open Source. A closed source library wouldn't make any sense to me.

Actually, the DSi game does the same thing I do. The DSi doesn't have an accelerometer.

I always though Johnny's work on this was incredible.. and am constantly amazed that after 3 years nothing has been done with the technology... Yet stupid 3D TVs are coming out (that aren't even 3 dimensional).

Very nice work, I hope to see some fun games (and even practical applications) come from this. It's just a shame it can't be as accurate as JCLs project is due to hardware.

On that note, how well can a camera track IR light seperate of other light sources? Could, with a non-out-of-the-box solution with some IR lights be more accurate than a simple light source?

I would die for seeing 3d renders of body tomography or nmr this way :) Why don't you experiment with the data available on the net? It could be a great instrument for studying anatomy...

Well, the DSi game, which I mention in the video and my blog post, uses this 3d effect. But that is also the only use I know.

IR lights seem to appear as pretty bright when recorded by the N900's front camera. Someone would have to test how well tracking of IR lights works.

That sounds pretty interesting and would certainly look cool, but I'm more into games than such serious stuff. ;)

Everyone: Sorry, there is nothing to install (yet). I don't know set when/if I'll publish something.

Could you not publish the code for us to work with? The community could make this algorithm go far and put the device a step ahead of every other device on the market.

I don't know much about this jfk person but I can only assume that since he's reluctant to release the source he may be trying to capitalise on his hard work and thats his right. Whenever (if ever) the Ovi store shapes up he may make a killer app and with the new iphone coming out with front facing camera he may want to make a buck off that too.

Hold the source jfk, just release the demo so these guys can show off what their n900 can do.

And finally, thats an awesome job. A good idea for a game might be some moto GP style racing where you lean to steer the bike?

If this work was done as part of a university project it may belong to them hence why jfk said s/he doesn't know whether s/he can if s/he wanted to or not but I agree holding the source and releasing a demo for now would be great.

Here's a video of what this kind of technology is capable of on the Nintendo DSi.
