Facebook works fine. so does FOX. Gmail always fails.
I thought it had started failing after a few seconds, but that is not consistent. It segfaulted almost immediately as I clicked gmail several times.

Looks like it doesn't crash anymore...

One sugestion:
Make an option to set the predetermined zoom level or make it remember the last page zoom value.

Agreed. gmail seems to be working fine with 1.8

I need to bite the bullet and replace the settings with an actual database so I can store more information. It is also important to store the "user agent" so you can use macuco to browser standard web sites as well.

Today I published the first version of Macuco for Meego. Now that I think I figured out the packaging I can get back to thinking about features.

Hello,
I've found that macuco2 is great in showing my google streetview page in http://www.debernardis.it/strade3-3.html - while the stock microb browser doesn't show the images correctly (maybe due to javascript bugs?).
In fact, by now it's the best native browser for that particular page, which before I tried macuco2 I had to open with kazehakase under easy debian, adding a significant overhead.

Using a javascript-only page like that is the only way to get streetview on the n900, as far as I know.

Now I'd like to open that directly throug a shell script, passing its url as a parameter, but I haven't found how to. I'd like also to tell macuco2 to open in fullscreen, 100% zoom, and with default user agent.

Is it possible with the present version? And, if not, could you possibly hack a new version which can be invoked with parameters?

Thanks, Ernesto.

Ernesto,
The current version does not have this capability. I will try to include it on the next release.

By the way, having streetview has been a common request for my other application GeePS and I also plan to implement it on the next release - just so you have even more options :)

Just downloaded the app and was thinking it could do with looking a little prettier, no offence meant.

How easy would it be to make the background black instead of white and to change the menu icons for iPhone-ish looking ones, just for the sake of cohesion and aesthetics?

ie, is it a viable mod for me as the end user to perform or are the images hardcoded? (not had time to dig around in the filesystem yet as am still at work).

Thanks.

The initial page (homepage) is is just a HTML page I created to help users find some of the web sites optimized for the ipod/iphone. It sits on my site, not on the app. The application just opens it by default.

You can create your own version of it and, if you do and decide to share with the other users, send me the html for it and I can make it into an option.

You can get the current HTML and images at: http://www.crochik.com/macuco/.

p.s. I haven't worked on the list of web sites since I first created macuco2. If you (or anybody else) has some good links to add to it let me know.

There is a new release available on extras-dev: version 0.1.9

Two changes:
  • enabled a disk cache (cached files will be saved to /home/user/.macuco)
  • implemented a rudimentary viewport tag processor

Is it possible to see stored bookmarks somewhere?
The IMDB-link under "other" seems a bit weird.
I have a better in my bookmarks which i would like to put in the other section

I like this app, accept the grey bird icon. It scares me
I guess macuco is that bird.
No other suggestions though

i use to have this apps on my n900...love it cause it easy to connected to my social networks....
what i didnt likes about this apps is when you logon to your facebook account...the news feeds is not the latest at all....even if you refresh the news feed couple of time still it is not the latest feeds....
if we cannot see the latest feeds then why bother using this apps at all...
that why i decided to remove this apps on my n900...
still i'm hoping there is a newer version that is much better than this that can fixed the news feeds on facebook account....if there is then i might reinstalled this apps & start using it again....

The "stored bookmarks" (home page) are actually on a web page on my server. If you have better links let me know and I will add them so everybody can enjoy.

Honestly I don't know anything about this but whatever it is the problem is a problem with the facebook web site.

This is just a browser that displays whatever data the facebook web site make available.

I find very difficult to believe that it doesn't work since this would be the same contents that any iphone user would see on their web browser.

That is really interesting/odd. If you can, please, try switching the user agent on firefox to the "iphone" one (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C97d Safari/528.16) and compare the results to what macuco will show you.

Until yesterday Macuco didn't even have a "cache" so I can't see how it would show you old information unless the facebook web site feeds it.

I tried on macuco and it seems that only the first page is optimized for a mobile device. The search results is already the "full" imdb page. Am I missing something?

New Release: 0.1.10

No new features on this release but I did some house cleaning on the code and also tried to improve the "viewport" detection. On my limited tests it works better.

Please let me know of any web sites optimized for the iphone that don't start on the "right" zoom level.

*********** I promoted this release to extras-testing. After testing please make sure to vote for it. ***********

Re: [Announce] Macuco(2) on n900 - "iphone faker" browser

New Release: 0.1.12

Now you can start macuco using dbus:

Code:

dbus-send --print-reply --dest=com.crochik.Macuco / com.crochik.Macuco.open string:"http://www.crochik.com" boolean:false
The scrolling, mouse handling and rendering should theoretically have been improved but I have to say that I didn't notice much of a change.

We depend on a new release of Qt/WebKit for that. There is a "experimental" 4.8 version that can be installed on the phone. I haven't checked if it includes a newer version of webkit or not.

For google maps you can use GeePS :)

Thanks a lot :) Please correct: s/-dest/--dest/
Rendering *is* better - at least judging by google maps.

How do I invoke an open full-screen by dbus?

You are right - fixed "--dest"!

I forgot about the full-screen. On the next release I will have it always open on full screen. I think it makes sense, don't you?

BTW, I should have mentioned before that the second argument is for the user agent (true=iphone, false=default)

I believe is an issue with not resetting the scroll position. At least looks like that on mine - if I scroll down on the blank screen I can see the contents and it works fine for the "groups" on the top of the page.

I will check and publish a new version. Thanks!

New Release 0.1.13

Just uploaded a new version to the server.

Mainly it reverts back some of the changes in the last release (it is using QWebView again). I couldn't really see an improved performance so it should not matter anyway.

Also on this version it will start new windows in full screen mode.

Black screen bug fixed.
On google docs page, have you purposely increased the zoom factor?
It is larger than the other Google sites.

Macuco is using the information on the viewport meta tag. Granted that I tweaked it a little. If you find any that don't make much sense let me know what it the metatag says and how you would like the initial zoom level to be. You can find the information on the macuco log (/home/user/.macuco/log.txt).

I was hoping someone else would answer your question before I had to ...

You will have to make the decision by yourself. What I can tell you to help you make it is that I (the developer) would use it.

A few things you need to consider:
  • You need to trust the macuco source code - trust me or check the source code
  • You need to trust that the package you downloaded match the source code I uploaded to the server - trust maemo.org
  • You need to trust Qt/Qt WebKit - trust Nokia/Qt
  • You need to trust WebKit - trust all the developers involved on it or, at least, Nokia revision of the code
  • You need to trust the platform and any libraries use by it to encrypt your communication with the sites.
  • You need to trust YOU on deciding what packages you installed

I could keep going but I would say that you just need to decide about the first two on the list. If you have accessed a bank account with the default browser on your n900 you have already decided about the others.

Hold on thar Felipe... I trust Macuco2 and all of your list, but I'd like to ask the poster is he trusts these things:
1. Do you trust your bank? Does it implement the correct security protocols? Will it safeguard your information?
2. Do you trust your Wifi? Have you secured your own network to intrusions and sniffers?
3. Do you trust your ISP? Has it taken appropriate steps to enable secure protocols?
4. Do you trust your device? Have you ensured that there are no keyloggers or other malicious crap that has compromised your device?

We'll worry about the browser, but these 4 points (probably more) are the things you need to worry about as well - I'd say more than macuco2.
