Wifi doesn't get disconnected after I close the application using the Wifi!

Hello All,

I am a new N900 user. Just got the phone few hours back.

The phone is complete for me. The only thing missing is a good social networking application with customizable Homescreen widget.

However the main aim of writing this post is to know that why the N900 doesn;t disconnects the Wi-Fi/3G after the application using it is closed.

thanks,

Try searching/downloading the app called AutoDisconnect..

but yeah it would've been cool to have this feature out-of-the-box..

No it doesn't. however N900 is a cellphone and not a Computer which can be plugged in to the mains 24/7.

Thanks guys for the Auto disconnect application.

So Autodisconnect application will disconnect Wifi if i am browsing continuously for say 30 minutes and the time for check is set to 5 minutes right?

You are welcome but haha dude what you just said is insulting :D N900 is a COMPUTER ;)
It runs Linux and only thing that reminds me that its a phone is my operator's name..hehe to be even more precise N900 is a internet tablet with a SIM card slot :p

True. Apologies for that. Battery drain worries me.

N900 is a Super Computer.

No, it only disconnects the connection if there is less than xxx bytes of data downloaded in xx minutes.

xx = settings in the autodisconnect application.

So for example, i have it set at 512 bytes/min and 5 mins.

Of course it depends on usage patterns but looking for wi-fi and negotiations are using much more energy than keeping connection alive.

inactive connection shouldn't drain too much battery. at least with 3g I probably spend the saved power from not being connected when my device uses processor cycles to run the app. but on an other hand I am connected to IM always when my device isn't in offline mode....

N900 is a Super Computer.

The default setting for all WiFi connections is the most aggressive power management. This means that the WiFi module will power down as soon as you're not sending data. This includes not receiving attempts to connect to the phone.

To actually stop the WiFi module from sending any data, you need to get down on driver level. libiw lets you do this. As long as it's not completely turned off, it'll continue to check if you've moved into the reach of any defined WiFi connection.

So, the actual gain in disconnecting from whatever WiFi AP you're connected to seems almost nonexistent as long as you use power management. But I'm sure people have done the measuring to get the data.

I can't really comment on 3G data connections since I haven't inspected that (yet).

And yes, the N900 is a Super Computer. :)
