and with 1gb, they dont have to notify you to charge... they will charge as soon as you hit 1.0001gb that would also mean agreeing to the new terms and you wont be able to cancel (if you want) oh btw, just quoting this from that link: Quote:

Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
agreed that Voda have made a right balls-up of this whole affair - but the end result for those like me who have an n900 but use mobile data "moderately"and as a result seldom exceed 500MB/month is that we can now get a free increase from 500MB/month (with potential charges for exceeding that threshold) to 1GB/Month (with a definite £5 per extra 500MB in the unlikely event that I consistantly exceed the 1GB allowance over an extended period).
I was explicitly told when I bought the phone from CPW in Dec 2009 that my limit was 500MB & that it could in theory have charges applied if I exceeded it on a regular basis (though they dd say that Voda "currently didn't do so"). This was also clearly stated in the documentation that came with the phone/contract, and with Voda's online T's & C's. I'm looking forward to the data network hopefully performing better for average users once those of you who're spending all day listening to internet radio, watching iPlayer/youTube & d/l'ing torentz over 3G are beaten with a financial stick and made to use mobile data more sensibly. They've also given you the option to (a) pay more realistic charges for your usage profile or (b) opt-out of your contract & change carriers to a plan more to your liking (if you can find anyone wanting your data-sucking custom). I don't want to sound like a Voda apologist (I hate the way the UK networks have for years made data too expensive to promote reasonable usage, and then swung over to only offering such usage bundled with expensive/lengthy voice contracts) but TBH there is no such thing as a free lunch in this life. Bandwidth costs money. If you have a genuine need for trully "unlimited" data then IMO you should also implicitly realise that marketing-speak "unlimited" != infinite, unless you are paying a real price premium over the normal data bundle - EXACTLY as was the case with home broadband. For those of you who, for legacy reasons, were genuinely sold an unlimited data allowance on Voda, with absolutely no FUP specified (verbally, with supplied literature, or via link to online contract t's & c's), I do sympathise on principle, but all good things come to an end. They are allowed to change the contract, you are allowed to leave if that adversely affects you. If you are really willing to dig your heels in, Ofcom ombudsman is your next port of call (good luck with that!). |

Then i went into work and my friend who is on 02 with an iphone was watching videos all the time loading maps and various other multimedia application such as spotify etc without a care in the world. The phone has internet radio, why shouldnt i be able to use it. The phone can stream i player movies again why shouldnt i be able to do this. If this was an issue for Vodafone they should have stated this when i bought the phone like they do with tethering etc. They should have said oh by the way even tho the phone has the capability you cant - watch videos - listen to online radio If they had said this I would have waited for the phone to go on 02 (it ended up doing this about a month after i cancelled :( ). I have never heard of anyone on 02 to have any issues with Data usage I dont see why i should be paying out for such a good web/multimedia phone and be limited in how i should use it. Lets face it if it was only the 3% of customers that they say go over. Why on earth are they making the changes to the other 97%. Now i definitely dont agree with downloading gig and gigs of torrents but a lot of people have said that even 1 gig is not enough for modern day smartphones/internet tablets/linux box (did i cover everything). So screw that i would rather cancel and go to a network that will enforce there FUP for the 3 % not the 100% that Vodaphone are doing |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
Frankly, Im just going to continue using my phone as much as I can. I got another text today from vodafone about my usage.
The minute they charge me... BAM. Im cancelling. **** vodafone |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
How to cancel your vodafone contract
Quote:
1) If you are regularly exceeding your usage, then continue using your phone as normal. If you just want to leave Vodafone, then exceed your usage on purpose 2) Ignore ALL usage messages for a few months. 3) Eventually they will call you to try and discuss new options. Absolutely refuse any offers. You signed up to unlimited, you want unlimited. 4) Eventually they will notify you and tell you that you will be charged for going over your usage. 5) Immediately write up a letter cancelling your contract and send it by recorded delivery to Vodafone. Mention the 10% clause, do some maths and calculate by what percentage your bill will rise. State that you have cancelled your direct debit and you are expecting a final bill from Vodafone. 6) Request a PAC code from Vodafone. 7) Cancel your direct debit. 8) Search for a new provider. If they refuse you, ask for a dead lock letter, or go to OFCOM or other agencies for help. They CANT FORCE YOU TO STAY. YOU ARE LEGALLY SOUND. They are in trouble, not you. Ignore all threats. Just say NO to them. Good luck!!! |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
I agree with Neegs ... unless you are constantly able to access Wifi the 500mb limit cripples what you can do with this phone ... I don't have home Wifi, instead I have a vodafone dongle (3GB) So when I bought this phone I was really careful to look for FUP and there was none ... I don't always go over 500mbs, and I've yet to hit 1gb ... but even without taking into account YouTube, iPlayer and internet radio (which I rarely use) I feel really limited by Vodafone's FUP ...

Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
This is bizarre. They seem to be saying that if I use more than 500MB of data this month (which is not hard), I can quit my 24-month contract, switch to a different network and keep my N900 for free. That would be so fantastic that I am sure they won't let me do that. I doubt they'll enforce this rule for existing customers, except perhaps in extreme cases.
BTW, I got my first 500MB warning SMS last Saturday. |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
They have to enforce it. Its in the terms and conditions.

Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
Now O2 are offering 500Mb too :(
**** sake, what is going on? I dont need unlimited texts. I need unlimited internet. |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
even unlimited texts is not unlimited, its normally a fup of 3000
|
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
|
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
yeah o2 are following vf lead except that they're changing new contracts and NOT tinkering with existing ones like vf, which is the way it should be done.
i agree that unless you use 30gb/month the minute they realise you're aware of your right to cancel, they just wont enforce the new charges and leave you alone until the end of your contract. once again i'd discourage everybody from changing their plans. you were sold an unlimited plan, no reason to give in to a downgrade to 1gb hard cap and give up your right to cancel your contract, getting nothing in return.... this is my last contract with vf, thats for sure |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
even on the 1gb upgrade the fup still applies ive had them confirm it 3 times now once on the eforum live chat and twice by 191, as long as i have only signed one contract i still intend to cancel if im ever charged for data.
|
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
i might do this then if all are gonna scrap it
|
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
matt that might be something they told you perhaps because your a long term client or who knows why. VF's official stance is that 1gb is a hard cap and that fup does not apply any longer
if it was something that was only to your advantage they wouldn't need your consent |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
Orange have now gone the same way:
http://www.reghardware.com/2010/06/1...ge_data_plans/ This does not look good for the future of mobile data. O2 are also implementing download limits on their home broadband for the same reasons, I worry other broadband providers will follow suit! Also interesting this seems to coincide with the relase of the iPhone 4G... |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
and bear in mind you have to send them a letter AFTER they notify you and BEFORE they start charging you.....
bloody hell!!! |

Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
im so pissed off. i just called Voda to see about upping my limit and they have said this is only for new customers not existing customers. even though it states this on their own website. WTF

Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
latest update is that i can increase my data usage to gig but have to reduce my texts. this is a joke

Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
HI,
Nothing new really ! Just look at your i.p provider for internet usage. Im on bt option 3 which is classed as unlimited but has an actual limit of 100gb. Now they do not charge if I go over they just cap my speed for a month. My point is they class it as unlimited but it si not. So nothing new really apart from Vodafone charge. |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
Hi,
Thank you very much for making this public and helping us sort this out. When we first signed up with VF we also had unlimited internet. Everything changed from the 1st of June though and we weren’t sure what changed, until we stumbled on similar posts like this. I looked at the VF forum and I found this official announcement from VF on this issue. http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/forum-53...rnet-charging/ We called VF today and after about 30mins of intense negotiation we managed to double the now limited allowance to 1GB. The person we spoke to had no idea about this and we had to directly quote parts of the post mentioned above and insist that we want to keep the exact same plan as we have now, but with the 1GB allowance. This is not great and I am disappointed that I no longer have the unlimited data plan, but it is at least better than the 500MB and we didn’t want to get into the process of canceling the contract etc. Good luck! |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
So whats the best tack for people to take? Angry and pissed off and threatening to quit the network or calm and collected? I average about 800mb a month and just recieved my first SMS warning me I have gone over...
I still don't get why they havn't contacted people making them aware of these changes?!!! dumb asses. Under what circumstances are people allowed to cancel their plan? |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
Im ignoring anything from them until they say that they are going to charge me for going over the 500mb. As soon as they do that they've broken our contract and I will cancel (you have to do it within 14 days of the notification they will charge you). Then you get your PAC code and can move to another network without any penalties!
iPhone 4 here I come |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
Just waiting to cancel now really.
I want them to charge me |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
Its not that easy, once they decide to charge you they will give you 14 days notice, your bill then has to be 10% higher then it was the previous month, this includes any phone calls, text messages etc you may have used.
So its not actually that easy, you have to be careful, best way is to use almost 2gb of data, then they would have to put your bill up by like £15 to £20, you would defo go over by 10% then |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
the way i look at it. my bills come in at 40 each month. and £5.00 charge for going over 500mb is more then a 10% so i should be OK to cancel. if they do charge me.

Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!

I wonder if there is any chance of grief from MPD, if anyone who got there N900 from them, and gets vodafone to cancel there contract to this whole grief?
|
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
hmm good point. I got mine from MPD.
I dont think there will be an issue. |
Re: Attention all N900 Vodafone users in the UK!
What the hell... They gave us another 0.5GB (i.e: another 30min of internet radio) to shout our mouths up. And my prediction is that more and more operators will follow this schedule. Why? because infrastructure is not ready and as far as I remember there was tones of articles about this issue 1-2 years ago. Now we have some solutions like SkyFire and other constant-streamers apart of video. 3GP is useless for me in most cases.
What is my point? Using Speedy on 3GP I've got average 55Kb/s with very good network coverage. That seems to be High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) (max speed of this technology 57,6 kb/s) Referring to GPRS technology (This is what Vodafone is using, and it was cover in original Vodafone PR by name Contract WAP or something) After you reflashed your device the lie has been reviled. Now default connection is called Vodafone Internet GPRS I was asking many times here is anybody here that know why it happened. What is the reason why Voda has own PR version and names? So after digging a bit I founded some information. Quote:

This is pretty much the same b*****t as TV (720p) and TV(1080p) is called HD. No! 720p is HD Ready 1080 is Full HD. Under consumer rights regulations in UE, sellers had to put the proper label on TV set to inform consumers about this fact. In UK they still not doing that and confusing people. Now even propaganda spread to the mobile world saying that some devices are able to record HD video... more and more confusion and now noone even remember the Full HD spec. (See most of YouTube videos 720p) Now my question is, are you be able to send back your TV set if you thought is Full HD but you realized is only HD Ready 720p? in UK. If yes, Same way you can do with Voda Fake Unlimited 3GP. Please do not take me as I'm sure all have said here is correct. Maybe somebody will prove me wrong about technological aspect of this story. Pretty much I would like to hear from somebody who know a bit more about this and confirm. This whole case stink to me that's why... I'm sorry for so long post, but I will be appreciated for some constructive thoughts from you. Personally I think we should act together as consumers against of cheating us around every bloody corner. Cheers. |
