I am always suprised how much focus is set on portrait mode.

I rather have an understandable add/delete song to/from playlist then portrait mode.

To me portrai mode is for phone mostly. I would never know why I would want to browse in portrait mode.

One app that would benefit from portrait would also be the qtirreco but then again the IR sender is on the wrong side of the phone :-(

So I rather hope for a lot of usability improvments rather then portrait mode all over the place. Furthermore I wonder how portrait mode on the desktop should work if you have different size widgets. The only way I can imagine is to have 4 portrait and 4 landscape desktops and configre them seperately.

Sigh, how many people need to be reminded of this one fact?

THE NOKIA N900 IS NOT DESIGNED AS A MOBILE PHONE, BUT AN INTERNET TABLET LIKE THE N770/N800/N810, BUT WITH MOBILE PHONE / SKYPE CALLING FEATURES

So the option of portrait as standard isn't going to happen. Hence why the phone application is the only application to rotate as standard.

Mods: Feel free to shout at me, but i'm getting sick to the back teeth of coming on this forum to read the same old stuff because people aren't doing research, and then expect everyone to bow at their feet for their stupid mistakes. Ta.

As would I - the developers have put a hell of a lot of effort into it, but knowing full well their work maybe wasted.

I think the least Nokia can do is take their source code and use it add mms to the N900 properly, and give them the credit their deserve.

don't worry. there is always a way to diverse from official implementation if such is released. (alternative keypad layouts, ....)

I know of the history and I've followed its progress over the year. But I don't get why this excuse is being used again and again.

If they market the thing in the same segment as N97, androids and iphone, then they better measure up to the same standards as the others. If they want to make use of the Internet Tablet excus^H^H^Hplanation, then by all means make sure that N900 is always clearly mentioned in its own market segment. Not go back and forth between 'internet tablet' and 'smartphone' whenever convenient (ie: marketshare calculation and whatnot).

Android, iPhone and Maemo all evolved from *nix roots in one way or another. Own up to the choices made.

I'd agree with you if it weren't for it doesn't seem like half of Nokia is talking to the other half. And the end result is mass confusion and chaos where marketing thinks the N900 is a smartphone (probably along the lines of Symbian) and the Maemo team considers it as the next step of the Internet Tablet series with the a cellular radio slapped into it for data purposes.

It's quite sad when I think about it. The number of individuals that have been mislead into buying the N900 by marketing and salesmen selling the N900 with no clue of what it does, doesn't do, etc..No wonder we have so many new users here that are in various states of satisfaction and confusion.

It's like I tell other people who ask me about my N900, I don't recommend it if your expecting a smartphone like Android, the iPhone, or even Symbian (although I have no experience with Symbian). Even in the best case scenario (QT compatibility brings all the commercial apps we see on the iPhone and Android platform) I would still say the N900 makes a terrible smartphone simply because it's OS design was not for smartphone usage.

Hell, I would even say it's a terrible phone if it weren't for my basic qualification for a phone being it makes and receives phone calls.

Call me crazy, but I would reeeeaaaally like an emulated n95(ish) on one of my destktops - alphanumeric keypad, two button press to unlock (is it me or would it not make more sense for the usb to be on the right/bottom and the unlock switch on the left/top? This way you could unlock the device with your thumb whilst holding it with the same hand)

Basically an emulated candybar phone, designed for one handed operation. The only downside i can see is that without having physical buttons they would need to be bigger in order to be useable.

Completely agree, the whole positioning mobile or tablet is basically impossible to distinguish now. This is just marketing speech and I guess it is like comparing a netbook with a smaller laptop... nobody knows for sure!! It is clear that Nokia created Maemo and the N900 thinking about competing with iPhone and Android, not competing with Dell/HP/Acer and so on.... the fact they brought phone capabilities to their so called Tablet line-up was just the natural step. Imagine if N900 had only Wi-Fi connectivity and removed the phone... no matter how much money Nokia spent on Marketing it would sell much less units than the previous device N800, just because the market has changed since then!! Keep in mind we are living the hyped term "convergence" with electronic devices, remind that a few years ago you only accessed the Internet using your computer, and now through your TV, videogames, mobiles, etc...

That was my business view of the cenario, now the consumer point of view:

I love my N900, but I wouldn't have spent 600 bucks if it wasn't to replace my N95 mobile. And yes, I had disappointments since I expected a Nokia phone to be have at least the basic features Symbian had on my N95 (if N900 had this from the beginning it would be a huge success right now, IMHO).

I don't regret buying and this portrait mode for the UI, even if it is experimental, it is a GREAT news since it was something that was supposed to be available only on Harmattan (now Meego), so I understand this as a signal that Nokia is listening to N900 feedback. As it happened to the browser, I guess PR1.2 will bring this option as an "experimental" feature and implement it officially on PR1.3 or later.
