So when are those updates coming?

Hey guys didnt someone say wasn't sure who it was but isnt nokia or whoever suppose to be coming out with updates fixing the video and stuff cause i remember someone saying they were in a few weeks and its been a month now. Just seeing if anyone has any new news because i would like to start watching some youtube and putting some movies on without going through a whole bunch of stuff that people have already been doing with downloading new apps and converting and all that junk...just nice and simple or am i just dreaming?

Re: So when are those updates coming?

Preparing a software update for an entire system (and not just a single program) is a _major_ operation, with planning and testing*N and QA and documentation and more. And it is important to do all of that, or you'll get the whole thing blown up in your face. It's difficult to see this if you're not in the business yourself, but trust me - "a few weeks" in SW speak simply means "less than many months". Certainly the term (speaking generally here) is closer to 12-20 weeks than 2 weeks. Me, I just sit back and let the whole upgrade come as a sudden happy surprise, when it arrives.. ;)

The best thing we can do is use our tablets and provide feedback on their perforamce. Believe it or not they actually read our comments.

If they read this forum then why do Nokia refuse to repair the cracked plastic on my N770 under warranty? (Rhetorical question really...)

The updates in the next firmware have been discussed in at least two threads about a month ago... try searching for roadmap or simply jaaksi. ;)

Someone should sticky the "roadmap" thread in the Newbie forum... Roger/Reggie?

EDIT: Here it is.

Well, personally I'm waiting for two things to happen before I consider buying the N800.

Firstly, Skype must be released and must work well
Secondly, but not a show stopper, HDSD support in the kernel

Have you tried GizmoProject?

In many ways I think the performance is actually better than Skype. I have been making calls while riding the tram in downtown Helsinki over 3G. On its best day, Skype could not manage this. Granted I am using my N800 and GizmoProject vs. using Skype on a MBP C2D. Regardless, Gizmo-P could manage the call (all international) without any drops in bandwidth or performance as opposed to me trying to use Skype on the same network with the same phone. If you mainly plan to call or just type the you might want to give Gizmo-P a try.

Hmm, I have not tried that before but it looks kind of appealing since there might be a chance of a free call (I normally use Skype out a lot). Non-free calls on Gizmo seem to be more pricy that SkypeOut thou.

By the way, any chance you would know whether the N800 can work with a Wifi connection which requires Cisco LEAP Authentication?

RE: updates coming? N800 BROWSER ISSUE

I couldn't seem to find where to create a new thread so I am replying here. I found a serious inability in the browser. This is accessing yahoo mail! In classic mail version when you view your email there are 4 boxes to select offering pull down choices when you click on the box. The boxes are delete, spam, mark and move. With mark or move you can't select any options under the boxes. And the new beta yahoo mail version has the n800 indicating not supported with the current browser. Does anyone have a way of getting the opera people or nokia to fix this! THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM .

Also, I can't get my N800 in to the red pill mode. Is there a simple way to gain root access. I have xterm on the device but when I try to su I can't figure out the password.

Also, I tried to configure an account to get the video chat working. When the camera is popped out, how can I configure th email correctly with google mail so I can send someone the link and they can click on it from a PC and chat with video with me. How about a step by step for us less knowledgable linux people.

THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: So when are those updates coming?

I was also stymied by the Yahol Mail problem till someone pointed out that what you can do is after you have, say, selected Reply, hit the square button at the left of your N800. Not the rectangular buton, the one above it.

Minimo, by the way, doesn't have ths problem, but it isn't quite ready for use yet.
