Skype?
After a fresh reflash of my N810 to fix a problem, I was loving it again. Loving it, that is, until I went to install Skype.
Last night, I attempted to install Skype and found that it appeared to hang when starting the download. Confused, I went and looked up Skype's website. There is no longer a Nokia download page or any mention of Maemo. It may just be that I am doing something idiotic, but I can't seem to find Skype anywhere. Does anybody know if Skype removed it's support for the N810 and/or where I could get Skype now? That nifty little program must be one of the most used applications on my N810 and things aren't the same without it. Thanks for your help! |
Re: Skype?
Intresting...
I have bookmarked this page: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/nokia/ It says "Hi, we have removed this page" Maybe we can email them |
Re: Skype?
here i have another bookmark, it says "n800" but is online. maybe its compatible

Re: Skype?
That's pretty disturbing if that's the case.
What repo was the Skype .deb in - and is that repo backed up (copied) somewhere (maybe a good idea for the future...)...? |
Re: Skype?
skype without webcam support on a device with front facing cam was the disturbing part. i was hoodwinked when i bought this supported device only to find out the web can is no better than an advanced mirror. epic fail

Re: Skype?
Using the internet wayback machine I got the same skype-nokia link the way it looked in mid-2008:
I think this works: http://web.archive.org/web/200807010...a/downloading/ My Skype, on my N810 says version: 1.7.113.2 and the linked download is 1.7.62.49.1 |

Re: Skype?
Very Sad! I found this I hope it is of some use:

Re: Skype?
Thanks guys! I appreciate the help. I thought that perhaps I had broke something on my N810. I'm not sure if I am glad I didn't. :-/
It appears that it isn't just Maemo 4 either. I believe they removed the Windows Mobile one as well. I feel sad to say that the .install files just won't work. That pretty much gives instructions to the N810 on where to download and install the files. The download has been removed as well. Who can I (or we) email about this? |
Re: Skype?
Also, it is still in the repo. I'm not sure if it default, but I know I have it in my application list. The only non-default repo that I have is Diablo-extras.
I emailed them and asked them what they were doing. I'll keep you guys posted! |
Re: Skype?
Wait...are you telling me that if I re-flash my N810...I will NOT be able to get Skype back?
That was indeed one of the reasons I got the N810 in the first place. I emailed Skype as well and I'd recommend for anyone interested in getting this back up on their site again to do the same (or to provde us with the .deb files). Does anyone in this community have them? |
Re: Skype?
Skype is still available. I have two Operating systems on my Nokia one on the device memory and one on the internal memory card. I never use the OS on the device memory it is a fresh install. I just booted it up and then selected Skype from the "My Selection" Menu. Skype was then automatically installed via the application manager! So time to stop panicking!

Re: Skype?
I received this from Skype customer service today:
==================== We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with downloading the Skype application onto your Nokia N810 mobile device. Thank you for your feedback, unfortunately currently parts of our website are under maintance and some links might not be updated automatically so we have reported this issue to our developmen team. Please stay tuned to our website, hopefully we can fix this issue within a couple of days. ================================================== ===== |
Re: Skype?
whew! Time to stop panicking. Just as a backup plan, I better get crackin' by doing my fresh install as soon as possible with everything I want on it, then mirror the install with console-tools. This is possible, right??

Re: Skype?
What catalogs do you have enabled?
I believe it's in 3rd Party or in Extras. Either way, 8:00am GMT -5, I was able to reflash and re-install everything without issue. I didn't download - never done that for their app. |
Re: Skype?
I had extras installed. That was literally the only thing that I had changed since I reflashed.
Did another flash and used the link. For some reason it appears to be working now. I don't know what happened, but it wasn't working for me at all. I'm glad to see that the website is just a coincidence. Don't worry anymore guys. It appears that Skype still exists for the N810. Some glitch prevented Skype (and only Skype) from installing on my device. |
Re: Skype?
I can't remember the answer to this question - but, when you reflash do you lose all the repos you've added and you have to add them again?
|
Re: Skype?
You have to add them. I keep a list around for that. Or... you can do a backup and they'll be there once you restore alongside the apps.
|
Re: Skype?
You lose everything that was on the device, including repos.
