Re: NOW I've Killed It... [N900]

Most of the heat comes from the battery due to it being discharged quickly during load. If CPU is the one that gets so hot that we can feel the heat through all that plastic, even a stock non-overclocked BUT over-volted N900 cpu is not safer by any means.

If you are unlucky, cpu will die regardless. In OP's case, although not impossible, it may not be the CPU as it does boot to a certain point. If so, ah well, unlucky. Hope it doesn't happen to mine for at least next1 year or so.

I would suggest you try reflashing the phone with the official pr1.2 firmware when it is released. Once that is done, you should be able to flash the emmc.

As long as you can still flash the phone, there is hope. I would hang on the phone until then.

thats what Im gonna do.......

I wouldn't say heat alone. But it is one of the biggest contenders. However if the device functions according to the manufactor's design, the device shouldn't overheat.

The biggest killer is without a doubt electrical damage such as a short circuit. Then there is water (humidity) and dust which is surprising how much damage it can do. Heat of course is also very dangerous but usually heat damage occurs due to the user meddling in. It is rare for a device to overheat by itself..unless the manufactorer is an idiot.

Many times i have seen components go short because they overheat that includes most components such as resistors transistors ic's ... the list is endless but the underlying factor to cause this is in fact heat and the very reason heat is the fundamental cause of killing electronic devices.
One of the main problems is underated components especially resistors that get too hot and go short ie 0ohm so instead of doing its job it lets everything past end result BANG lol.

If you consider how tightly packed the components are in a mobile device reducing operating heat is an important and relavant factor.

My n900 is "standard issue" (no firmware updates or overclocking) and it does get pretty warm when I play one of the many console emulators on it.

Maybe the 600mhz speed was selected because it offered the appropriate speed vs heat?

It's a shame his n900 is so messed up but he must have known the risks before he started.

The only thing he can do now is to reflash with older, stable firmware but not use the phone functionality (can't downgrade it).

Hopefully the 1.2 update will be soon. If you need a mobile phone you will just have to use an old one during the meantime.

This proves the risks are not theoretical but very real.

:) Your n900 probably thinks this:

I had a similar situation where a pcb behind the instrument panel of a motorhome stopped all the guages working all because of dry joints and all it needed was a complete resoldering and all worked again but i might add this motorhome was in fact over 25 yrs old lol.

Now flash the CMT from the leaked firmware. should give you back phone functionality.

lol its not the leaked PR1.2

it was that you overclocked it to 900MHZ. 800MHz should be the max. lesson learnt. send it back to nokia
