Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
Why is everyone on here so obsessed with merging threads? If someone starts a new thread that I find interesting, theres always someone slating them. Whats the goal here, to help people find what they need to know, or have 3 total threads with everything merged in..
If i use the search to try and find help.. Huge threads (like for example the Pr1.2 thread) always come up, and even if i find a thread that might have the answer im looking for its 50pages long and cant find in there what I need, at least not easily. Or am I doing something totally wrong? |
Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
It's not an obsession, just a fun pasttime. Like knitting frog sweaters and bowling for soup.
But if you use Search effectively, the size of a thread is no issue. Have results returned by POST, not thread. |
Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
I would like to thank the moderators for cutting down on all of the ridiculous posts in this forum. Whether you do it through deletion or merging, thank you.
Sincerely, Phono |
Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
A trick I use is search from Google. Usually I don't need to be site specific either. Just type what your looking for in Google and put N900 at the end of it. Usually the Maemo Talk forum pops a with a link to the post you need.
Use 'site:talk.maemo.org' in google with your searches and it will only return hits from maemo talk forum |

(Have to say that I don't really understand why this has been relegated to a link hidden in the side-bar that nobody ever looks and why the big prominent search box displayed on all pages uses a different and completely useless search engine) |

I never new it was there. The other search engine would need to be improved to be called useless. |

Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
oh yer the power search is much more useful never really noticed it before. the main search is pretty pointless. wow it found the words "sygic volume" in a 362 page 3,614 post overclocking thread lol. they should switch the searches around!
Is there any good sorta wiki straight up problems - solution pages any one can recommend? |
Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
Yes the search is quite pointless. No offence but I can never find what I'm looking for. I use google site:talk.maemo.org to search.

Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
The obsession with merging threads is probably due to the fact that (much like this thread) they slowly go off topic, already we are talking about how lame the search is so next we'll be talking about pr1.2 and the BAM! merged!
Also can I have a thanks for being the first to mention PR1.2 Zing! ;) |

Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
now I really understand why one finnish forum has a zero tolerance with threads about moderation. all issues are handled between 2 persons and thats it.
this again... another useless thread, why couldn't you OP contact reggie with PM for example? |

Searching thread titles for ioquake turned up zero results. Searching all content for ioquake turned up many. Searching titles for ioquake3 did return results. Looks like a wildcard is needed in such a case. Anyway, I did prove out GeneralAntilles' assertion. |
Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
ye there are plenty of threads just not the one I was looking for... It was one of those times where u can't remember anything from the thread so I had nothing more to go on but ioquake hehehe
I got there in the end and that's the main point ;) I am truly amazed that a phone is capable of running quake3 if you had told me this when quake3 was barely playing on my home pc I would have told you where to go hehehe in fact almost the same level of amazement that this thread hasn't been merged yet hehehe zing x 2! ;) |

Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
If you know what you are looking for you are in better shape than most searchers.
The real answer to the problem is a good Wiki. Check out the Overclocking section of the Wiki and compare it to the impossibly long overclocking thread, for example. |
Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
I for one am glad that threads with similar content get merged together, they get in the way of other usefull threads.
I came on here a couple of weeks ago and there were half a dozen threads in active topics with pr1.2 in the title, not to mention all the extra overclocking threads started because people either cant be bothered or dont know how to do a search, speaking of which the excuse "the thread is too big, how can i find anything in 3500 posts" is ridiculous, does knowone use the search within thread in thread tools. I think a tutorial on how to use the forum would be a good idea, if people want to post they must complete the tutorial. |
Re: Whats the Obsession with merging threads...
I'm with the OP (original poster?) on this. One of my gripes is that sometimes a thread becomes confusing until you read "thread with 7 msgs merged with...etc" a few messages later.
Why not lock them and give a reference to the main thread? Searching within these extremely long threads is also not easy, since you sometimes get lots of hits back (although I will try the power search some more from now on). The Wikis can be useful, but often they are not up to date so you still need to search the threads. And even if they are, you still don't know if they are.... |
