Chinese Support in N800
I would like to browse websites with Chinese characters. Can anyone tell me how to do? Though I hv read most of the threads in this forum, I still feel confused and don't know how to do since I am really a newb to Maemo & Linux. If anyone can post the procedures step by step in details (even the command sentence :o ), it will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Chinese Support in N800
There are several ways to make the opera browser in N800 display traditional chinese characters.
I think this is the easiest. Use this package from the maemocjk project: http://maemocjk.garage.maemo.org/dis...maemo1_all.deb Just download the file and install in using the application manager. Don't forget to reboot the device after installation. |
Re: Chinese Support in N800
A note for (advanced) 770 users. The above deb package will not work on the 770. At least not directly. Installing will give an error (apparently the fc-cache command has changed)
To install on the 770, one needs to download and extract the package, become root to copy the ttf font to /usr/share/fonts, issue fc-cache -fv to refresh the font cache and finally to a reboot. Please let me know if anyone needs more detailed instructions :) |
Re: Chinese Support in N800
Thank you Henry.
The above deb package is good however it will disable the original input method. What I want is to display Chinese characters especially during web browsing. Chinese Input is not that necessary. |
Re: Chinese Support in N800
Well if you choose to install the maemo-chinese-support package, then the original input method is replaced. If you only install the true type font package (link in prev. message) then the original input method is still there.

Re: Chinese Support in N800
Any single file installation?
I believe I have read the message of installing fonts you mentioned. However, I think I need step by step in details (even the command sentence) coz I even don't know how to become root :( |
Re: Chinese Support in N800
@BigBoss
The second message was for 770 owners only. For N800 it's really simple. Just open this link in your N800: http://maemocjk.garage.maemo.org/dis...maemo1_all.deb Choose to open the deb file. (or save is somewhere first and use file manager to open) After installation, reboot. That's all. |
Re: Chinese Support in N800
Dear Henry, this will disable the original input method, right? It is what I don't want to be happened.

Re: Chinese Support in N800

You might also consider asking the maemocjk project to include thai support. |
Re: Chinese Support in N800
I have installed the maemo cjk and loved it. One question though, where can I find the common symbols, - colon, at, pipe, question mark etc. ? I found some but not all under ja pad - dot however they look like 2 byte characters so I guess they won t work for password...
Just can t figure out... |
Re: Chinese Support in N800

It sounds as if this works for some people, and doesn't work for other people? Is that the case? Does this Chinese Input method work for anybody out there? Maybe I'm missing a step that I'm not doing, but I've basically followed all the steps from http://maemocjk.garage.maemo.org/os2008.html. Please help! I'm desperate! I've re-flashed my Nokia N800 few too many times already! (Because it won't let me un-install the chinese input files as well >_<) Or that I just really don't know how, and I consider myself a pretty savvy PC user (strictly Windows that is, first time Linux user). |
Re: Chinese Support in N800
If you have OS2008 on your N800 and don't care much about input, then you will get the best Chinese browsing experience by copying arialuni.ttf from your XP computer to /usr/share/fonts/.

Re: Chinese Support in N800
Well, that's the thing I, in fact, would like to INPUT Chinese. I don't have any problems VIEWING Chinese at this moment.

Re: Chinese Support in N800
I guess we have to wait for the OS2008 version of "CJK support" to come out. The OS2007 version worked.

Re: Chinese Support in N800
Try: http://www.inputking.com/. It works, sort of.

Re: Chinese Support in N800
hmm..that's quite an interesting website. It works very well on a computer, but sad to say it doesn't work on the tablet :(. Thanks for the effort though! Appreciate it! Hope there is some resolution to this topic very soon!

Re: Chinese Support in N800
Why wouldn't it work on N800? I tested on mine before posting the message. It worked, albeit clumsily.
