Question For You AT&T N900 Users

Hi! I really love my N900 I just picked up. I had an N97 before, but it did not live up to the needs I needed it for. I was an Iphone user before that and have come into the light of this powerful phone. The issue I am having is that I am part of a family plan with AT&T. It would be awesome to have 3G to take advantage of the internet on this device. Is there a way I can pre-pay for a 3G plan on T-Mobile while continue to use my AT&T line? Any help would be much appreciated. I read this website and was wondering if it might still work:

That would be dumb sense the data only sim is like 40 a month (tmo).

I have at&t and data on edge (2.5g) blows. its almost impossible to stream video, but audio streaming is err. reasonable. Not worth the 30 a month extra Im paying.

Ive been thinking about switching over to tmobile data and using sip or something.

The mistake there is paying for the $30 plan, as their $15 plan (assuming it still exists) is plenty sufficient for 2.5G browsing. I'd switch to T-Mobile, but their coverage is still terrible enough to the point I'd be on AT&T's 2.5G most of the time anyway.

wha? I have a family plan.... and unlimited data... it's $10 per phone. if you have more than 3 phones, it caps at $30.

so if you are paying $30, you are not only paying for your phone, but other people's internet as well.

I have the 2.5g and yeah, it ain't so hot. I have wifi at work, and wifi at home though, so I guess it only sucks on the road. I'm stuck in this family plan for what seems like life.

If you're not on a family plan, AT&T charges $30 for their smartphone dataplan.

My point is getting 3g data, (where i live tmo has good 3g coverage) and i travel for work so my wifi coverage is spotty lol.

And Im paying for a single phone to have internet on a family plan, and unlimited family txt/mms for the other 4 lines.

Re: Question For You AT&T N900 Users

Yes, I used to be a T mobile user just switched to At&t recently because of T mobiles poor coverage in SF. I didn't have any plan of buy the N900, so I wish I sitcked to tmob.

However, the data plan for AT&T costing 30 bucks is "NOT WORTHED!!" I tried it for a month, it's amazingly slow. It will take you forever to use the app manager to download a small app. Watching a video on You tube is a nightmare.

If you get good coverage from T mobile in your area then def. switch to Tmobile, plus they are cheaper than At&t too. I wish I could switch but can't because I am in a family plan plus the network from T mobile is HORRIBLE in the Bay area.

smartphone is the key here. A widely-followed practice is to take a dumb-phone that AT & T gives for free when you take a new contract and enable data plan for it. Data plan for dumbphones is 15$. You don't have to boast to AT & T that you bought a high-end unlocked smartphone like N900, in which case they'll charge 30$ per month.:)

I hear you :( It is depressing to use a phone like N900 at 2.5G speeds. Seeing all the hype about T-Mobile 7.2 Mbps 3G rollout, I thought their coverage improved and bought a pre-paid SIM. Surprise, TMO coverage still sucks in bay area.

@phatman2600 - Just out of curiosity, if this plan works do you intend to keep switching SIM cards for data usage (TMO) vs voice calls (AT&T)?

Re: Question For You AT&T N900 Users

yeah anyone paying at&t $30 for data for an N900 is a fool. esp since you dont even have 3G. the $10/$15 medianet plan is what im using on both the N900 and N97 mini, and its fine.

Has anyone used a dual-sim adapter with the n900 yet? I can live with having to switch between the 2 as long as i dont have to turn off my phone.

No, it's a standard SIM with unlimited data. I do more than 40MB pretty much every month. I think I have yet to exceed 1GB, but I don't think they'll pay attention unless I got near 5GB.

At the very least, I haven't found my data access cut or seen my bill jump ;)

Tmobile just kills your speed after 5gb no overages.

Actually that's what I was hoping for. I think we need to wait for one these things to happen:

- US/FCC/AT&T decide to consolidate the 950/1800 Mhz frequency band (AT&T 3G) with 2100 Mhz band (TMO/Europe 3G). This is never going to happen :(

- Nokia releases a phone that works on 950/1800/2100 Mhz 3G frequencies (yes 3G not EDGE/GPRS). Seriously, why is that so difficult? I understand that battery life might suck, but at least release a concept phone.

- A consumer-friendly dual-sim adapter that can be inserted into a phone like a regular SIM card.

I was considering doing the two-sim adapter. I'm wondering if I truly need 3G after using it today. It just feels strange not having 3G available with such a powerful phone. By the way, are the bands that are specific for the device hardware based? Is it the antenna chip that uses these bands? I'm wondering if software can change this or even taking the chip from an N97.

i want to know also, i feel shafted big time with nokia's decision is support the t-mo 3g band and not the ATT
