My phone went mental after installing firefox

so basically i installed firefox today, and before that i installed some other apps off ovistore.

and ever since i had firefox installed, i keep getting 'error, photo application closed' and errors like that.

most of the widgets i had on the desktop keep disappearing, and the phone become very unstable (sometimes fast sometimes slow)

and just for matters of interest, when i open firefox, everything become really slow and laggy, when i closed it everything went back to normal.

now that i have uninstalled firefox, nothing seem to be solved, im still getting errors every now and then , widgets are still closing itself off.

please can anyone shred me some light? is there a clash of apps somewhere?

thanks

Have you installed the custom kernel? revert to 27 -- 28 has bugs.

If not, give us more information in return we will give you better answers.

"went mental" - :D

Try uninstalling Firefox and the kernel flasher, then revert back to the standard kernel if you can:
Code:

apt-get install --reinstall kernel kernel-flasher
(as root)

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

Try this thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=52868
that file you installed is part of the power kernel.

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

hi, thanks for you guy's replies. how do i uninstall the flasher? because i try to find it in the app manager's uninstall session but i cant find it.

or do i just type that command straight into the xterminal?

thanks

hi, thanks for the link, so should i open the 'deinstall kernel-power' app to intall the original kernal?

so confused at the moment:confused:

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

open xterminal

become root
Code:

sudo gainroot
or
Code:

root
if this does not work you need to install rootsh with app-manager first

STEP 1: uninstall the power-flasher
Code:

dpkg -r kernel-power-flasher
STEP 2: reinstall stock(this one after the previous succeeded)
Code:

apt-get --reinstall install kernel kernel-flasher
If everything went well, you reboot and be fine again!

If firefox still messes up uninstall it and reinstall from ovi again.

I would consider "dpkg -P" instead of "dpkg -r" for complete uninstallation. I would also try "dpkg --configure -a" and "apt-get autoremove" in case something not got installed or uninstalled properly.

And the most important thing.. the one i would do last is.

apt-get install --reinstall kernel kernel-flasher

To revert back to the stock kernel. In other case he would probably get a reboot loop.

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

thanks for the reply, apparently its because i installed mobilehotspot, which is depending on the kernel flasher, hence when i try to uninstall it via xterminal, i get a error message.

am i better off uninstalling that as well?

thanks

That is not the kernel-power-flasher. That is hotspot-kernel-flasher. It is not the same.

Just "dpkg -P mobilehotspot" should do it. I am not aware about that program so much.

1. Open Xterminal
2. write: root
3. write: dpkg -P mobilehotspot
4. write: dpkg --configure -a
5. write: apt-get autoremove
6. write: apt-get clean

If you also want to uninstall kernel-power-flasher you could

apt-get install --reinstall kernel kernel-flasher

oh i see, but when i open up that app. , it definitely says 'kernel-power flasher', and just to point out also, i installed mobilehotspot quite a while ago, and i had no problem with it....but i guess things like these happen when they feel like it?

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

true to get it in one thing again
uninstall the mobilehotspot (and have a look if it maybe unsinstalls the power-flasher with it ->details in app-manager)
to make sure all is gone and back to stock become root in a xterminal and proceed
Code:

dpkg --purge kernel-power-flasher
apt-get install --reinstall kernel kernel-flasher

reboot

and no apt-get clean! (not needed and not a good idea as long as you do not run out of rootfs space)

("dpkg --configure -a" is not needed and "apt-get autoremove" is not available for this version of apt so ignore those two)

If you "apt-cache showpkg mobilehotspot" you will se it's dependencies. And it have nothing with kernel-power to do.

("dpkg --purge kernel-power-flasher" is the same as "dpkg -P kernel-power-flasher" and "apt-get autoremove" are available.. have done it a couple of times. "dpkg --configure -a" where just a precaution) ;)

hi, thanks for the replies.

ok so now im gonna uninstall mobilehotspot, and hopefully it should take the kernal flasher away with it and everything goes back to normal. if not then i try to go through the commands in terminal.

thanks again.

p.s sorry for asking about every little step, only that i would hate to be stuck in reboot loops , especially when i have two exams coming up tmr and the day after. =(

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

'pkg --purge kernel-power-flasher' you missed a "d" as in "dpkg" ;)

Strange.. Then try "dpkg --configure -a" and "apt-get autoremove"

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

hi,
i turned off the device, then when i try to turn it on, the LED doesnt light up, but nokia screen came up, and turns back off.

i guess its time for a reflash ? lol

das_schlumpfie 2010-05-17 15:15

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

You forgot the last part right? And yes, a reflash are necessary. ;)

hi, thanks for your help anyway, i guess i learnt how fragile a smartphone can be lol

anyway i know this has been asked like a trillion times, but would you mind just giving me a few simple steps to reflash ? because i found a thread but i barely understood what it was talking about.

i also found a youtube video but im unsure of its correctness.

http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N...ED_MR0_ARM.bin

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KLSYGXRF

quick tuturial:
making sure phone is off,
download flasher (to PC)
install
download firmware
download install.bat
move firmware and install.bat to C:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5
plug usb into computer only
run install
and hold U on the n900 keyboard and plug in usb to n900
should connect then start to install (takes about 90seconds)
boot up your n900

Edit: I have just updated an old guide I made ages ago but now with new firmware version. should work still though. + This is for the global firmware, is this the region you want to install?

hi, thanks for this excellent guide, but im installing the uk firmware since thats where i am and where i got the device.

is there any difference?

Tiboric 2010-05-17 17:07

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

well i'm from uk an bought from nokia uk direct the day it was released. I've been using the global firmware since then. and had no problems there is only one difference that i have come across and thats the extreamly late FW updates for UK and the main reason I use this firmware.

but it up to you, I can easy change it for uk for you...

P.S. where abouts in uk are you?

das_schlumpfie 2010-05-17 17:29

Re: My phone went mental after installing firefox

hi, im in hull lol

i have to agree with the late fw update in uk, and since someone experienced like yourself said its ok to use the global firmware, i suppose i will use it too lol

thanks for your help, though i dont have time to do it atm (two exams in the next two days =[ ) , but once theyre done i will get back to it.

for now im sticking with my trusty( not really) old LG wine.

cheers

hi, its me again, i havent flash my device yet, but an idea of overclocking came into mind.

from what i know , you can flash a kernel (is that what its called?) with an overclock preference into the phone. do they have lots of bugs? i would like to try the n900 at a faster speed, since some claimed that overclocking actually increases the battery life...

thanks
