Chinese Telecom equipment manufacturer ZTE has formally presented a preview of its new MID V7 ZTE at a ceremony dedicated to the 3G technology at the World Expo in Shanghai.

The new ZTE MID is particularly thin and lightweight, it measures 120×85x12mm, with a weight of 190g. Its main feature is that it has a physical QWERTY keyboard for SMS or Twitter addicts. Its screen is touch sensitive, it measures 4.1 inches for a good resolution of 800×480. ZTE has equipped its device with a 3.2 megapixels camera for capturing photos and video. The V7 is powered by a Marvell PXA310 processor running at 806 MHz and the operating system is known as the Nokia Maemo OS like the Aigo NX7001. In addition to basic telephone and SMS functions, it is able to perform multiple tasks such as, video conferencing, view streaming videos on the internet, read MS office documents, send emails etc … As a leading telecom, it has equipped its MID V7 module compatible 3G CDMA1X, EV-DO and supports HSDPA for mobile internet access. Its terminal also integrates WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, an SD slot, a USB … etc. and a 1800mAh battery.

ZTE is currently testing its new MID V7 through volunteers at the World Expo. They will report via 3G the latest event or feedback on micro blogging platform. Given that ZTE is working around the world with telephone operators, we can therefore expect this 3G device to come in our countries.

ZTE has not yet announced a launch date or price, but I will update the post if new information rise from the great wall.

Very interesting form factor.
Sadly only CDMA, so not for europe.
And it is also interesting, that maemo 5 now seems to have arrived at the chinese manufacturers.
The previous models still had a Diablo base.

Yeah, the form factor is real curious... I think it's gonna be too wide (tall, if you put it in landscape) for most people to pocket comfortably.

They should just make a snap-on, removable (modular) slide-out keyboard for these things...

The HTC advantage had a magnetic keyboard which could also be used as a screen cover. That was a nice idea..
But looking at the picture again, it seems that it isn't maemo 5, just a skin for diablo (again).
Look at the three buttons on the left hand side, and the statusbar icons at the right side. Pretty diablo-ish..

@Z:
Oh yeah, I remember htc advantage... the keyboard had to be used on a table/surface though.... and the device itself was monstrously thick and heavy (!)

I was wondering why they're still trumpeting the maemo brand, with MeeGo as the fresh new thing already announced.

Maemo is not only for Nokia devices. There are large chunks that are not open, and they must replace those.

If not, there's a lawsuit in the works ;)

there is a reason why these do not ship outside of china, and that is that nokia would slap them with trademark abuse and request that the products be banned from entering whatever market the lawsuit is being done in.

This showed up at Computex as the ZTE "iBrowser" - quite sure it isn't coming to USA. :p

ibrowser

The skin looks different again. Don't know what it is now.

Re: ZTE V7, a 4.1" 3G MID with Maemo

maemo5? And as he stated towards the end, aimed at chinese domestic market (no risk of getting sued into oblivion by nokia lawyers that way).

and he claims cortex in the video, but the info on youtube talks about pxa300, and thats xscale (so maybe somewhat more powerful then N800, but dont expect N900 level).

given that someone here on the forum have more or less remade maemo5 as a skin for maemo4, and that previous "maemo" devices out of china didnt sport the sidebar, it would not surprise me if the people chippy talked to before shooting that video was, well, lying every other word they said.
