Where does it go
 
Hello all,

My first post to Maemo.org,

Ever wondered what happens when I download a new application, that then gets installed to my phone.

What happens to the download file. Some are over 50MB do they get stored on the phone?

And if so how do I get rid of it? Better yet how do clean up my folders?

when u download a file it asked you where u want it to be saved which is normally on the mem card 32gb emmc part. just go in there find it and delete it once u install it.

I had a look on my N900 and found these .deb files that I have installed:

Keeping them on the phone or not is a matter of taste. It's easy to reinstall them if you still have them but it takes up some space.

You could always try to use the /home partition in creative ways but that's a bit more advanced.

He means if he download .deb, install it and what happens with .deb....
So you may type ,apt-get clean, to Xterm..but phone does it automaticly.. :) old .deb folders doesnť stay in phone

You found them only because you used apt-get from command line. When you normally install applications via Application Manager the .deb file is deleted immediately after it's installed.

You can clean out that cache with:

apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean

You will have to do that as root, so install the gainroot package. Then go to the terminal and type "sudo gainroot" to become root. Then do the above commands.

If you don't understand what that stuff means yet, DON'T DO IT. Learn some basic linux first in a safer environment. I suggest installing virtualbox on your computer (or vmware server, if you are feeling braver), then installing Ubuntu in a virtual machine (you can choose another distro if you want, but Ubuntu uses .deb packages and uses apt-get, so it is more similar to your phone than some other good distros). You can do whatever you want within the virtual machine without worrying about messing anything else up.

I see. I thought the Application Manager was just a fancy layer on top of apt-get and dkpg and nothing more.

Not unless you manually download .deb files from say maemo.org from your PC thenusb trasnfer them over to your mem crd. The file will stay on the mem card

@ Lucass77 I did actually mean auto downloads from application manager as apposed to manual downloads.

How can I confirm the Phone removes the file after the install?
