Turning off 3G is a good start. Only use WiFi if the access point supports proper power saving. Decrease brightness of the screen.
Reduce swappiness level of the kernel (can be found somewhere in this forum). Reduce frequency of e-mail and RSS updates. |

Telling people to use the search function aside  Here's a few pointers that come to mind from what i've done to prolong battery life.
It would be handy if numbers 1, 2 and 3 were automated rather than manual but manual is better than nothing. 1. Turn 3G off manually using the 3G/2G/Duel Mode Selection application. Basically I use GSM mode unless I really need a 3G connection. 2. Disconnect Wifi, 3G, GPRS, Blutooth automatically once no longer being used via the AutoDisconnect application. 2. Disable Wifi manually when not needing to use it, using the WIFI switcher application. My understanding is this stops the device looking for wifi as opposed to being connected (ref 2 for the latter) 3. Turned off (unable) GPS and Network Positioning manually via Settings_Location unless using an application thats dependant on one or other. 4. Turn off automatic email updates from within E-Mail_Settings. 5. Minimised Backlight timeout from within Settings_Display. 6. Minimised Brightness (i use 2 bars) from within Settings_Display. 7. Switched off touch screen vibration from within Settings_Display. 8. Enabled 'power saving mode' from within Settings_Display. 9. From within settings_internet connection settings_(chose the "WLAN/WIFI" connection)_edit_next_next_next_advanced_other. Set the 'WLAN transmission power' to 10mW and switch 'power saving' to 'on maximum' and save. |

Someone new to the N900 might not want to be going in the direction of a new 'bigger battery'. Unless i'm mistaken no warranted, approved, Nokia recognised bigger batteries exist for the N900 at present do they ?? |
Re: tips to prolong battery life .......
I myself see a failed point of buying N900, but not able to use its features because the small battery; disabling all kind of features.
Why not buy basic phone instead then? Of course all kind of battery saving tricks which do not affect usability of different hardware features, are always welcome, but as the OP says, it is somewhat obvious that device with all these features will also need lots of juice. |

It's perfectly reasonable to consider which of the phone's many features are essential to you, and which ones you prefer to sacrifice in order to get more battery life. By the way, I think my battery life is better when I shut down and restart the phone every two days or so. When uptime is much over two days, it seems to me than hildon-desktop and/or hildon-home become much more likely to hang and suck the battery dry. |
