Thanks kojacker,

But I would suggest to write [N900 Coding Competition] in the beginning of the headlines... you should ask also to change it on the actually running threads. If you write this in the beginning we should see a neatly arranged overview of all coding cometition voting threads in a single block. Not other sticky threads between them. :)

I guess the next time we need a own subforum! :D

IMPORTANT

Please stop all!

An error not depending from my fault has ****ed all applications using libqtm-multimedia. Nokia just upgraded libqtm-multimedia from 1.0.0 to 1.0.2 and this broke my application. I've tried uploading it again but I get compilation errors: https://garage.maemo.org/builder/fre...log.FAILED.txt
I'm getting a damage not depending from my fault so I think we should suspend the votation until someone fix the error because nobody can use my application, I neither can use it!

Re: [ANNOUNCE] The First N900 Coding Competition! 21st May-21st July. Open to all!

Andy, I have you down for two projects - LastGo and mSoma. Which project is it you are having problems with or both? Also, are both projects still being entered? I only received further info from you on LastGo, I have received nothing further about mSoma since it was added to the wiki..

We can't really suspend voting for all categories on just one report. I haven't created the Graphics&Multimedia voting thread yet, where your application(s) are being entered - I was actually just about to start it - but let's leave it to the last and I'll start on System&Utilities now. That way if there is a problem it will hopefully affect few already in the competition. In the meantime, I would suggest working to see if you can fix the problem using the new libqtm-multimedia version.

Can anyone else confirm this problem with their project?

Just chiming in to say I LOVE the voting part best about this competition. Now that all of the projects have descriptions and links, there's so much to discover - my only fear is that I'll run out of root space before the end of the competition... :D

Thanks again for this great idea, kojacker!

Hi kojacker,

Thank you for opening the voting thread for the 'other' category.

Could you please include these lines to the eye4 application section?

How it works
See the instructions at the right bottom of the screen.
Start pressing arrows on keyboard to indicate that you recognise the symbol. Its original size is 111.
With each successful choice, it decreases in size by one point.
When you can't, or reach size 1, its size gets reset.

The current and the previous best (smallest) score is shown at the left bottom.
The checking can be done with varying distance to screen and light conditions, one of the eyes closed, etc.

Keyboard shortcuts
To MINIMIZE the program, press Ctrl+Backspace.
To EXIT (close application), press C (close), E (exit) or Q (quit).
To HIDE or SHOW THE INSTRUCTIONS in the right bottom corner, press H or S.

Planned features
  • Keep the history of score results

Certainly :) Take another look now and check it's how you'd like it. Let me know if anything else needs fixed/changed, it's no problem :)

I request all the threads are made sticky as soon as I make them, by reporting the post and requesting it be done. Sometimes u have to wait :)

I think it has been moved around a bit too, i couldnt find it earlier.

kojacker, I added one more screenshot to my project info post. I hope its fine, if not, just use only the first one. I spent a lot of time on handling similar overwrite/error situations in my file manager and I figured it should be something to appreciate :) Thats why I added it.. thanks.

No problem lukash, everyone has 24 hours to add new stuff and well your thread isnt even up yet :o

To all - is there any more word on andy80's "Please stop all!" situation above regarding libqtm-multimed?

Edit:
Ok.. according to this community posting andy80 made a post 20 mins after his on here saying he had fixed the problem:

Quote:

I fixed with this changes:
http://gitorious.org/lastgo/lastgo/c...15cfbcc351d748
but it was really annoying for me, let me say :\

Now I'll have to submit my package again to extras-testing, loosing
priority in the queue....
As the voting thread for System & Utilities was basically suspended at that moment because of him, it would have been nice if he had come back and let us he had fixed the project and what he did.

Also, andy80, I have still not received anything about the second project you are listed on the wiki for (mSoma). Can you advise? Please help us to help you :)

Anyway.. 2 threads left, the two longest ones. But it's the weekend so we should have these both up and running later today :)

Both project are affected. I fixed LastGo and now I'm going to fix mSoma too. Both project are subscribed to the contest. I collaborate to the other one too, but I'm not working alone to mSoma, I'm working with Lorenzo Bettini (as the description says).

I hope to be able to fix all, but this is very very annoying and I'm very disappointed with Nokia for breaking API in this way affecting stable libraries!

Sorry if I didn't reply immediatly :( I was very tired yesterday night and I went to sleep. I just wake up :P

Sorry for my warning, but an API break could have compromised all multimedia application and as I said this was a very bad move from Nokia.

Good luck with mSoma, can you or Lorenzo send me a PM with further info (just like you did with LastGo) when you've fixed it?

No problem :) And you're absolutely right about an API break problem could cause a bad situation, so thank you for the warning! Do you think other people will be affected and can you advise what steps you needed to do to help others who become in similar situation?

I didn't check the other projects, but surely all using libqtm-multimedia are affected.

From 1.0.0 to 1.0.2 they (Nokia) changed the API calls and the way a developer have to use PlayList and Player objects. If you look at my old code I had to use a different code for Desktop and Maemo targets. Now I've to use the same code on both targets. This is better for code portability but they should have done this change before releasing 1.0.0 not after.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] The First N900 Coding Competition! 21st May-21st July. Open to all!

Ive spammed everyone else on the Graphics&Multimedia list to ask them to check if they have the same problem, and to provide Andy's helpful advice.

Quote:

Does your comp entry use libqtm-multimedia API? Possible problem.

Hi all, I’m writing to everyone who have entered the “Graphics & Multimedia” to advise that one of our entrants reported a possible issue with an API version upgrade which affected two projects he was working on. The API is libqtm-multimedia and, as he explains:

“From 1.0.0 to 1.0.2 they (Nokia) changed the API calls and the way a developer have to use PlayList and Player objects. If you look at my old code I had to use a different code for Desktop and Maemo targets. Now I've to use the same code on both targets”

If you are using this API in your projects, please check that your project is still usable and running as expected. If it’s not working right, please contact me asap. I planned to start the voting thread tonight (UK time) but if enough people are experiencing this problem I’ll hold it back to allow for fixes. We have around 12 projects in this category, so say if I get 4 negative replies I’ll start the vote on Monday morning – giving the weekend for fixes and testing.

Thanks

Here are the details for the Destrois game for this page: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=58990

App name: ***leave as is***
Author: ***leave as is***
Brief description: ***leave as is***
Screenshot(s): ***leave as is***
Features/work to be judged: The game was especially developed for the N900. On screen joystick and accelerometer support, although the game is 2D, I hav used 3D modeling software to render all the sprites. I hav been using an image menipulator to create those space view backgrounds.
Package name and where to find the app/repository: You can download from extras-devel (Just make sure it's this destroid_1.0.2-2_all.deb (v-1.0.2-2)) or install manually by the How To Install. Direct link: http://www.mediafire.com/?npv9pip7lslncgz
Maemo.org thread or garage thread (if exists): ***leave as is***

BTW, I have read in that page that the top 3 will get prizes. what are the prizes?

Thanks In Advance!!!

I just pm'd you back, but as you wrote it here I'll copy it back in

Top 3 are gonna get a 50%, 30%, and 20% share of the categories share of the bounty which is 1/6 of the total bounty.. confused yet? :P (Edit: apologies, this is incorrect. See edit below).

Also Nokia has promised to fly the 1st placed winner to the MeeGo conference in Dublin Ireland, accomodation and flight paid for. If the winner cant go, they'll substitute a new N900.. which you can then pawn if you like! :p I still have nightmares about this cos if something happens with Nokia and they don't come through I will probably be lynched...

You're also entered into the beginner's competition, where the prizes are much less fancy.. cos Im paying for them! :p Ive outlined those prizes here http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=360. 1st placed winner gets a Qt development book of their choice along with $50 to their paypal, perhaps slightly less glamorous than a flight to the MeeGo conference.. :D

I hope that all makes sense :)

Edit: Apologies, I was confused and assumed the bounty split had been worked out. It has not, and will be decided by community poll.

Maybe I'm still a bit confused :)
So the first winners of each category will be invited to the MeeGo Conference 2010 and plus will win the 50% of the bounty?
If it is so, I would suppose that is better to have 4 winners for each category.
The first one (of each category) wins an invitation to the MeeGo Conference 2010 (or a N900) and the bounty will be splitted only with the other first three (2nd,3rd,4th).
What do you think about?

I think it's a good idea but it's waaaaay too late to discuss it :)

I wrote several pages back before the competition entry ended that it's going to be a 50%, 30%, 20% breakdown unless I hear feedback otherwise. But no feedback came :(

I can't see how we can change this now that the competition has started. What if I change it, and the winner comes knocking looking his 50% share.. refuse him?

This really needs to have been decided long before the competition went into voting stage :(

Edit: Ive had a few PMs suggesting the same thing, also I would like to spread it more. The bounty has been larger than what we expected.. dont forget we started with $50 :o Can it be changed?

Edit: Ok I tell you what, the first page of this thread says :

"In addition, we have a bounty to award the developer(s) of the best overall apps. If you would like to add to the prize fund please see this post, reply/pm me and let me know, or contribute directly"

The wiki says :

"Also there will be a prize fund into which the community will be able to donate. If you would like to add to the prize fund please reply here[9].. $5, $10, anything would be gratefully received. Why not sponsor your favourite category?"

The only place that says 3 prizes is the voting threads I changed today, but maybe I made a mistake and assumed 3 places. There's nothing in the wiki or first page that states that to be the case.

Im going to start a poll, and I want you to work with me on this. Everyone. You're going to decide the split. I'll run it the rest of today and tomorrow. And that will be it.

So tell me, what options do you want on the poll? Here's your first three for starters:

* Each of the 6 main categories gets a equal share of the total bounty. Split 50%, 30%, 20% to places 1, 2, and 3.

* Each of the 6 main categories gets a equal share of the total bounty. Split 50%, 30%, 20% to places 2, 3, and 4 (as Nokia are covering the main prize. What are you going to do with teams, Nokia are sending one person..?)

* Each of the 6 main categories gets an equal share of the total bounty. Split 35%, 30%, 20%, 15% for the first 4 places.

Edit:
A fourth, compromise option

* Each of the 6 main categories gets an equal share of the total bounty. Split 50%, 30%, 20% to places 2, 3, and 4 as we're expecting Nokia to cover the first place prizes. If for some reason Nokia does not cover this, we'll revert back to 50%, 30%, 20% for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Ok everyone, what options can you come up with? :) If i sound stressed about this, I am! :o

We need this sorted out like yesterday, so please get your thoughts in now. Im starting a poll in 2 hours

Eesh, what a dilemna. I personally would like to see all the developers that entered the contest to get some share of the award but I know that may not be possible.

For the first place problem, why not make it so that they can either choose the cash price or go to the Meego conference?

Ohm... are Nokia sending the first place from each category to the MeeGo Conference?

Now I'm confused. :D I had the opinion we have to select from the winner of each category a overall winner for the whole contest. Number 1 out of the 6 categories and this one is invited by qgil and nokia. And not 6 people.

Am I wrong?

FWIW Nokians stated that QtMobility 1.0.0 was more of an alpha/beta, not a stable release, rushed to be in tandem with PR1.2. And you don't want to know how much poking/annoying it took from me personally to have 1.0.2 finally released - because I reckoned the more time passes with 1.0.0, the harder the transition to the 'proper' API will be (I'm certain that there are people throwing darts at my image because of that :) ).

In other news, I would encourage authors who have uploaded their apps to extras-devel to push them to extras-testing. That way we will avoid unnecessarily exposing people to extras-devel, and also you have good chances of getting tester feedback and promotion to extras proper.

About mine: LastGo is already in extras-testing, while mSoma is still in extras-devel. I still have to optify mSoma, but the executable is just ~200Kb. If it's not too much for /usr/bin I'll promote it to extras-testing and I promise to optify it for the next release.

Yeah.. it would be spread far too thin and the paypal fees for each transaction would kill it. We have around 50-60 projects, you'd be talking about awarding a couple of bucks by the time the bounty is spread out.

What about this: the winner of each category will be invited to the

make it then we can offer an N900 in exchange.

Ok.. 3 hours later and Laughing Man's suggestion of offering either the money or the trip is the only feedback or suggestion put forward :(

I must warn whoever is running the next comp how things work :p You want to do something and you ask for thoughts, and you get nothing. You then make a decision, announce it, then move on. Later you'll get 5 PMs asking you "what the **** are you doing???!!!one11!!" :p

Like seriously! Sooo many questions about why everything is happening like it is.. I need more vocal feedback from you guys please! Constructive vocal feedback, not the "You're a loser and your competition is a loser" type :D

I dont think so asking if the winner wants the money or a trip is really a goer, Nokia have said they'd substitute a N900 if someone cant do the trip - I cant really see anyone taking the money. To me it looks like the 2 options are:

1. Each of the 6 categories gets equal share of bounty. 1st/2nd/3rd get 50%/30%20% of that share.

2. Each of the 6 categories gets equal share of bounty. 2nd/3rd/4th get 50%/30%20% of that share as Nokia are rewarding the 1st place winner. If for any reason the Nokia reward falls through, revert back to option 1.

If I get one person who says "Yes" to this idea, I'll start up the poll. :)

Else, gimme some more options!!

Ah thanks! :)

In this case I would say lets give the first place only the Nokia reward. The trip (or a new N900) is expensive enought for a first place. :)
So give place 2, 3 and 4 also something... a small motivation is always good.

No, a choice between $80, a trip to Ireland or a Nokia N900. :D
So, if you prefer money... would you pick the $80 or a new N900? ;)

This competition is great kojacker, thank you for your effort.
It is not that important for me, how the prizes are shared.
The important part for me is: We all have won because
we get so many great new applications.
Thanks to all developer for your work.

regards

Nicolai

You are all waaaaay too nice! :D

Helex - I'd definitely choose the new N900 over the $80, although prices of new ones are dropping all the time!

We'll give it a while yet but I think we're gonna run this poll with the above 2 options.... unless someone Ninja's in with a suggestion or two...

I'm sorry. I had to fix a dependencies problem on my device and after that I began writing but my telephone rang before I submitted my answer... :) I'm sorry, and yes... I'm always very bussy. :D

I uploaded a new package (only with a fixed description) for my application and promoted it directly to extra testing to avoid confusion. I had before a older version in testing. But I guess this way it is, as attila77 said earlier, better.

I'm well with booth of your suggestions. My only problem now is to be patient enought to see the Multimedia voting thread online.

I totally agree. Those are the only sensible options. Out of which I would choose the second one. I hope there will be promised prizes from Nokia. If so the competitions will be even greater success than it is right now. Thanks kojacker!

I vote for:

Each of the 6 categories gets equal share of bounty. 2nd/3rd/4th get 50%/30%20% of that share as Nokia are rewarding the 1st place winner.

If for any reason the Nokia reward falls through, revert back to option 1.

Where is the poll, kojacker?

I was kinda hoping I could just knock a poll up and stick on here rather than making a new thread just for the poll. I cant see any option for that on "new post" or editing the first post. Does anyone know if that's possible?

What about creating a new thread (with poll) and then merging the two threads? I have heard moderators can merge threads?

By the way, Beginner Apps Voting thread should be a sticky, just as Game Apps Voting thread.

The voting thread for Graphics & Multimedia is up. As always, please check everything is ok (especially links) and let me know if you need any changes :)

Already requested :) I request they're made a sticky as soon as I make them, but i think we just have to wait until a mod sees the request.
