You're right. Groove-Shark has fantastic potentialities. But in my opinion we shouldn't list this project twice. ;) :D

D'oh! :p

Nicely spotted Helmuth! :) I see it's in the wiki twice, where i blindly copied the list from, so I'll edit that too.

kojacker,

First of all: Congratulations again on the initiative! Looking at the list and thread it seems that you a lot happened in two months!

It probably makes sense this way so there is no need to worry about people fixing bugs on the application after the initial submit and pushing a new package to testing.

I am still curious on when the voting will end and the winners announced though...

I just realized that I was calling my application an "applet" not a "widget"... I guess too many years of JAVA will do that to you...
I changed on the wiki and you may want to change here to match.

Thanks,
Felipe

Thanks for the kind words, and let's pass those congrats to everyone (inc your good self Felipe) for getting involved :) Lots of devs have got behind it which rocks, as one of the donors said in a pm so much new development (both projects and threads/chat) has started up since the comp began and we're stealing the credit for that ;) Also so many generous folks on here have put their trust in the comp and donated to the bounty, which says alot for the community here :) And poor Cosimo is spending his hard earned snorkeling vacation doing competition book keeping :)

We're kinda feeling our way there and there's been hiccups but it's coming together, as I said before the next comp will learn all the mistakes of this one :p

I was thinking taking a week after closing date to allow everyone to test the apps and vote for their faves, so say around July 31st by latest we should have our winners. Does that sound fair? Too long? Too short? Id appreciate any thoughts, especially you guys who's apps are in the contest - let me know so I can get it right :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] The First N900 Coding Competition! 21st May-21st July. Open to all!

Hi.
I'm relatively new to this forum, and just saw this topic.
I want to enter this competition with a script/application that I am making: A simple, bootloader-based(requires: 'bootloader-n900') complete backup and restore utility. Think "ghost" for the N900.
As it is now, you can only backup settings with the included tool, and if you "brick" the OS, you will have to start from scratch with apps etc.
With my tool, you can simply create an image, and at a later time restore it - There are one or two ways of doing this, but all require network/SSH access, and all require complex PC knowledge.
My application aims to solve this problem: You simply reboot the N900 with the keyboard open, select backup from a list, and follow the on-screen instructions.

As it is, I am about 70% done with it, having started last week, but I am hesitant to post my code here until I make sure that the restore tool works as-described.

That all being said, can I enter this application, and if so, is this post good enough? Should I do something more?
And, when I get it finished, where should I post it(and its install instructions)?

Thanks all,

-Rob

I'd like to ask for a proper Comic Reader.

Actually, cbrPager is not completely finger-friendly and have some bugs since upgrade to PR 1.2 (missing icons) and Comix has also some problems.

Thanks to all.

I wish someone would make a program for resizing the application shortcuts and contact widgets on the desktop.

There are currently a hack made by Matan to hildon-home that allows the resizing of application shortcuts but it doesn't work for the contact widgets.Link

Would be awesome if someone knowledgeble made an UI that enabled this things.

Hi Rob, you're very welcome in the competition :) Everyone is welcome to join right up to the closing date, the more the merrier.

What you got to do next is add yourself to the participants list on the wiki at http://wiki.maemo.org/index.php?titl..._Competition_1. If you're not sure how just let me know what the details and category you want to enter and I'll do it for you :)

Im not sure how your script runs, but we're aiming to get new applications into the extras-dev repository by closing date for ease of installing/testing by other users/compo voters.

ivgalvez and AlMehdi, thanks for your suggestions, good ideas! To be honest though, we're in the last week of a 2 month competition - it's probably a little late for someone to start developing and entering those ideas now. But if anyone is working on something similar and yet to enter it, well now they know it would be welcome by others :)

OK, I think I did it right.

Currently, all that is needed is:
1. Install 'bootmenu-n900' from the extras-dev repo
2. copy my script, "BackupMenu.item" to the "/etc/bootmenu.d/" directory on your N900.
3. Reboot with the keyboard open to use.

Now, I'm pretty sure that this can be done easily enough making it into a package, but I have never made a package before. I've seen a couple of guides, and may be able to figure it out -- Or I may need some help.

Edit:
See http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...837#post754837 for details.

Where should I submit the "entry.txt"?

kojacker 2010-07-20 02:16

Re: [ANNOUNCE] The First N900 Coding Competition! 21st May-21st July. Open to all!

We're nearly there! Im dreading making all these voting threads :p You may be wondering how we're doing with the bounty, well we've got €519.98 collected so far! :) A billion thanks to everyone who donated!!

According to google, that works out to be just over $670 (therefore just over $100 a category) so if there's no complaints or better ideas we'll award it as follows:
  • Each of the 6 categories will get an equal share, ie. the bounty/6.
  • First place will be awarded 50% of the category share
  • Second place will be awarded 30% of the category share
  • Third place will be awarded 20% of the category share

So in total there will be 18 prizes (6 categories * 3 winners each), in addition to the big Nokia prizes :)

Remember, anyone who has still to donate, there's still a week to donate if you'd still like to! ;)

It's been quiet, but we are still running a beginners contest. I have updated the wiki participation list with a column for you to say if you would like your entry to be entered into it too. The beginners compo will run parallel and is open to any author who has/is releasing his first code project within the competition dates. Simply stick a "Yes" in the column and you're entered into both, simple as :) And ofcourse you're eligible to win prizes in both too :)

Fake's online store is still not up so Im unsure of the chances of getting those lazer cut stands I promised for the beginners bounty. Instead, I may need to find something else to substitute in. It'll probably not be great, but it'll try and make it cool.. in a geeky way :)

Ofcourse, as I only just added the column, we dont have any entries for the beginners comp yet :p. If I see 3 entries tomorrow morning I'll start ordering something to send to the winners :) I dont want to spend if nobodies gonna enter haha :p

Hmm.. Im sure I forgot something, but this post is kinda getting long anyways. I'll go get some sleep, the real work starts tomorrow and Wed

Hey Ben, well you can pm the details to me, attach it to a post (if there's no private info in it), add it to your file repository, link it somewhere - as long as I can get at it.You dont necessarily need to have an entry.txt file, as long as I can get the same details requested in the rules. Most of these details will help make up your entry's details in the voting thread, so the better info you give me then the better you can explain and sell it (so to speak). If I got nothing to work with, then I gotta make it up! :p By being on the wiki PenPen is already entered.

Btw, I've updated my entry to 95% - all that's missing right now for version 1.0 are localisation and the darn Readme (I'm terrible at writing those). I might not make it until tomorrow, so please just enter me with the un-localised 95% in that case... ;)

Does the "current progress" listed in the wiki page matter?

I mean, mine's soon 100% for the purposes of the competition (all the current features work) but it's still in -devel and I'll be adding features... So it's not at 100% generally speaking :)

Hi Guys,

So i'm currently releasing KhtEditor (http://khertan.net/khteditor) if nothing goes wrong during test.

And i ve released two days ago a new version of my game VectorMine ... so this is an upgrade, but a major one ... now, it's a Open Sourced GPLv2 Game available for free.

VectorMine is available on my repository : http://khertan.net/khertan_repository

And KhtEditor should be available soon : http://khertan.net/khteditor

Hehe, the one inside the app is just a placeholder with 3 fake titles and the corresponding fake sections... :D

If I had any actual readme, I would have posted it in the thread or (if I had found the volunteer post) sent it to you to correct my lacking English. But, alas, no readme so far thanks to my inherent dislike for writing documentation. :(

After sending an email on Jul, 3rd to maemo-community mailing list and having no reply at all from the organizers of this contest I'll try to ask here (even if I don't think it's the right place to put this kind of informations):

1) Submitted entries should be accompanied by a forum post and/or a text file with the authors email, PayPal address, the name of the software and a brief description of the software. This file should be called "entry.txt"
What is the right section of the forum that contains all submissions?
Please don't point me here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=53112 it's a 30 pages thread and I don't think there are 30 pages submissions.

2) Who do I have to send our emails, paypal account ecc... to? I don't want to publish these informations in a public thread, I'd like to send these only to the organizers of the contest.

3) Who are the organizers/responsables of the contest? I cannot find them here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Coding_Competition_1

4) Where exactly the votation will take place? Who can vote? Which are the criteria of voting?

I think that an information like this should have been mandatory for a contest.

I felt quite lost about this contest, because I tried asking about this lot of times in #maemo and nobody knew anything about it.

Regards.

here in the forum using the built-in voting system. I think for each category there will be one thread to vote afaik.
Every maemo.org member can vote but only actual users who have tested the apps should vote (so they know what they're voting about).

Dammm!! It's madness on here and on my pms! What are you all doing to me! It's 12.30am and you're destroying my social life! :D:p It's great though

So much to answer.. I'll work my way through it, but first a big thank you to our new Bounty heroes! Step forward and receive your medals of honour mobiledivide, Slocan, SallyJane, and Smoku

Cosimo has the spreadsheet but if my maths is right, and it's usually not :p, we're now up to a magic €566! Which is approximately $731 US wotsits!! How good is that?!

And we still have pledges that have yet to be filled, hopefully more still to come :)

Also big thanks to Alek, Heli, hgh, Carol, Slocan, Damian, Rob1n, and matrim for sending me their entry pms. Im starting to run out of pm space, I better get pruning :) If by any chance you should find your pm to me bounced back because inbox full please resend later.. I want to make sure I get everybodys :)

Ok now onto the questions.. I heard someone has basically given me a kicking in one of the posts so Im not looking forward to coming across that one.. :o

Pretty much, a screenshot too would be nice. We won't sweat the details just yet, we can always update the voting post if info is not complete. Give me enough to get you entered in the first instance :)

You're a true programmer, Nathraiben! Writing docs is definitely the suckiest of all sucky things

I wonder if there's any limit to post size on here... onwards we go.. :)

You did exactly the right thing shapeshifter. To anyone who wants to enter, stick your details on the wiki page :) If you dunno how, pm me and I'll do it for you :) It's all in the instructions.

Sorry Andy, Im not on the maemo-community mailing list. Please understand this is not an official maemo.org contest, it's users here trying to run one. And we're amateurs at it, it's the first time and we're feeling our way in the dark a little. As I said before many times in this thread, the organisers running the next comp will learn the mistakes of this one :) By the way, this is exactly the right place to ask questions, that's the whole purpose of this thread :)

What is the right section of the forum that contains all submissions?
Please don't point me here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=53112 it's a 30 pages thread and I don't think there are 30 pages submissions.

We're trying to keep it simple, add your submission details on the wiki page, send the details to me, and upload your code onto the repositories if possible.

Nobody wants you to write private and confidential details in an open forum. Most people will be pm'ing me directly with these details. But, as stated in the rules, we can collect the paypal email later.. it's no problem. Im not trying to harvest private data here! :) It's simply to send any winnings out quicker, but we can collect it later.. no sweat :)

You can blame me for it all if you like :)

It's been said before on this thread that it's going to be a vote on this forum, a thread for each category. Anyone that wishes to vote will need a maemo.org account to do so.

It's all there somewhere, but I take your point. There's no doubt things could be organised better, and I'm sorry you were not able to easily find the info you were looking for. So apologies for these failings because they land at my door. But we're trying my best.

I'm afraid you've been a little unlucky because it probably wasn't the best place to ask. :( But we've had 5,317 views on the wiki so far so I'd have thought a few of them could have pointed you in the right direction

Any questions please bring them on this thread and I'll do my best to answer. You're very welcome to enter the competition if you'd still like to :) But, please, come into the competition with a spirit of forgiveness because not everything is going to be smooth or perfect, but we're getting there :)

If I had any actual readme, I would have posted it in the thread or (if I had found the volunteer post) sent it to you to correct my lacking English. But, alas, no readme so far thanks to my inherent dislike for writing documentation. :(

Ah that explains it. I never actually read it. I'll get started writing one this Friday then.

Edit: Donated to the contest. :D

Ahhh.. thanks for reminding me Ben :)

Well the whole point of the competition was to get more people either doing more coding or starting to get involved with coding for the N900. We're going to run a beginner's contest in parallel with the main coding competition. It's a smaller competition and only for folks who are creating their first N900 applications, not for veterans, and anyone eligible who wishes to enter can let me know by adding a "Y" to that column. These projects will automatically be entered into both contests, the main coding one and the side beginners one. I hope that makes sense :)

I did post last night that I hoped to see atleast 3 "Y"s today and you all didnt disappoint, we got quite a few so far - amandalam, lullen, Naithraiben, andy80, vwrap, and avis.. but it'll be cool to see more

I still got to sort out a winner's bounty for this, it will be separate to the coding competition bounty and prizes.. actually it'll be coming out of my poor overstretched credit card :p I originally hoped to offer some of Fake's lazer cut stands but his online shop has not reopened yet.. I'm still mulling this over.. I'll need to get my skates on. :o

Thanks Laughing Man! As soon as Cosimo confirms the amount left after paypal swipes their bit, I'll have the list updated with your name on it :)

By the way, digitalsurgeon if you are reading this your Easy Wallpaper entry is still showing as "Utilities & Destop"! There is no such category, you have to choose one or the other. If it doesnt get updated in time I'm going to put it in desktop just so i dont have to disqualify it, so please update the entry with which category you wish to contest in :)

Edit: Ok, here's the Beginner's Competition Bounty and Prize I'm offering.

1st Prize is $50 to your paypal
2nd Prize is $30 to your paypal
3rd Prize is $20 to your paypal

In addition, I'll also buy and post to the first prize winner a choice of either the following two books to help develop their coding:

http://qt.nokia.com/developer/books/...++image-normal or http://www.informit.com/ShowCover.as...1635906&type=f

So one's PyQt and the other C++/Qt, the winner can choose depending on which poison they prefer ;) The second one's not released until July 9th so they'd need wait an extra week or so..

Sound ok for prizes?
